T... more Zhang model is developed through a series of assumptions and hypotheses by reverse engineering. The model intends to integrate everything we know about the human memory into a single memory model. It was first proposed in 2004, which posited the memory process and function of sleep. Based on this model, Zhang further hypothesized a continual activation theory, which explained several mysteries that were related with human brains: such as, dreaming, restless legs syndrome, schizophrenia and sudden infant death syndrome. In this article, the original Zhang model is revised and numerous new assumptions and hypotheses are proposed. As a result, the revised Zhang Model will cover many subjects, such as: attention, emotion, memory classification, working memory, temporary memory, learning, sleep, dream synthesis, amnesia and hallucination. The author proposes that both illnesses are caused by the activation of the continual-activation mechanisms during waking, due to the dysfunction of the continual-activation thresholds, one in the conscious subsidiary system, and the other in the non-conscious subsidiary system.

The model is based on two hypotheses: the temporary memory hypothesis and the function of sleep hypothesis. The author proposes that there is a temporary memory stage to bridge the gap between short-term memory and the long-term memory. During our waking time, the memory formed from the working memory is not saved directly into the long-term memory; instead it is saved into a temporary memory. The function of sleep is to process, encode and transfer the data from the temporary memory to the long-term memory. To test this new memory model, some well-known research and observational results, which could not be understood before, have been explained based on this new memory model.

When the level of activation of either subsidiary system descends to a given threshold, the continual-activation mechanism in the brain will be triggered to generate a data stream from the memory stores to flow through the subsidiary system in order to maintain the activation level above this threshold. Dreaming (type II dream), as a conscious experience, is only an epiphenomenon of brain continual-activation in the conscious subsidiary system of working memory.
