Factors governing the rate and direction of prairie dog (Cynomys spp.) colony expansion remain po... more Factors governing the rate and direction of prairie dog (Cynomys spp.) colony expansion remain poorly understood. However, increased knowledge and ability to control these factors may lead to more effective reintroductions of prairie dogs and restoration of grassland habitats. We present density and directional analyses of the establishment of new burrows on three reintroduced colonies of Black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) in southern New Mexico; the study colonies had been subjected to mow and burn treatments in the second year of the study. Our hypotheses were that prairie dogs will preferentially dig new burrows in the treatment plots versus control plots and that the colonies will expand in the direction of the treatment plots. The results support these hypotheses; analysis of burrow counts by site and treatment shows that prairie dogs preferentially colonized both mow and burn treatments compared to untreated areas at the periphery of the colonies. Directional analysis showed a significant posttreatment orientation of new burrows toward the treatment plots for all colonies. Our results show that the direction of expansion of prairie dog colonies can be manipulated. Effective control of the expansion of prairie dog colonies may lead to more successful reintroductions.
The institutional context in which CIS operate has failed to evolve with either the rate of softw... more The institutional context in which CIS operate has failed to evolve with either the rate of software and hardware developments, or the numbers of systems installed. This realization has been dawning on the CIS community over a number of years, and has led to studies such as the Wisconsin Land Records Committee and the Minnesota Inventory of Mapping Systems. The failure of institutions to evolve in the context of GIS is rapidly resulting in costly and repetitive efforts in database development and expertise at all levels of government, and in other areas. In this paper we will present a generalized model for the idealized institutional setting of GIS. The model is independent of implementation and could be realized in a continuous spectrum of contexts from fully manual to fully automated, and in size from Federal Government to small city or private company. Native American tradition indicates that each of us carries traits closely associated with select... more Native American tradition indicates that each of us carries traits closely associated with selected animals. Such traits, referred to as medicine, are often indicative of occupations that we choose. Among these is Coyote Medicine. The coyote is a trickster and is frequently found within teachers at all levels (K-16), enabling them to get material across to their students where others might fail. In this article I explain the traits of the coyote, and, with examples, show how these might be applied to your GIS student to assist him or her in grasping some of the concepts of GIS. The concepts include identifying patterns, overlay mistakes, creating weird polygons, and recognizing erroneous map output. I demonstrate how combinations of humor, tricks, demonstrations, and repeated mistakes can lead to enhanced learning for your GIS student. These suggestions might trigger your own coyote medicine.

Un proyecto de violencia familiar en Nuevo México en los Estados Unidos, usa ArcGIS de ESRI para localizar y llegar a las poblaciones de alto riesgo en las áreas rurales. Usando información del Sistema Judicial de incidentes de violencia familiar, estamos localizando en mapas los áreas que tienen altos niveles de violencia familiar, en los cuales son enfocados los esfuerzos de prevención y promoción de servicios. Una promoción de servicios enfocada ayuda a maximizar recursos limitados y asegura que las poblaciones de alto riesgo son alcanzadas. The apparent heterogeneity of human-generated materials in residential urban landscapes sustains concerns that the quantitative classification of urban residential landscapes is impossible. The objective of this research was to develop a method to quantitatively classify urban residential landscapes in a desert environment. Using a purposive sampling procedure, we studied the landscapable area around each of 54 residential homes in Las Cruces, NM. All materials in the landscape were identified, measured, and categorized. Using 30% as the cutoff to indicate that a material was dominant in the landscape, we classified 93% of all landscapes into nine common landscape types. Mulch-dominant landscapes were the most common, and landscape types differed between front-and backyards. Shrubs did not feature prominently in any of the common landscape types. Our classification method clearly identifies multiple landscape types, and for the first time, provides quantitative evidence that landscape types are distributed differently in front-and backyard landscapes in the desert environment of Las Cruces. Information on common landscape types will be valuable to landscape horticulturists wanting to craft water conservation plans that are landscape specific if the common landscape type can be linked to a landscape water budget.
