Each organization in it acts as either customer or supplier to others. Ordering and replenishment decisions of each organization or stage contribute to supply chain performance. A simulation study and experimentation were conducted in this study to determine the impact of ordering decisions on supply chain performance. The ordering decisions at each stage are taken by intuition for experimentation and are taken by inventory policies for simulation. Under customer demand distribution information sharing, the performance of a supply chain is evaluated and compared between those two conditions. A supply chain role play game software package is used to evaluate supply chain performance by intuition, and simulation is used to evaluate different inventory policies. Fixed order policy, Order Up-to Level (OUL), Modified OUL (MOUL), (r, Q) and (r, S) inventory policies are considered in this study. The performance measures used are the total supply chain inventory per period, bullwhip effect and supply chain fill rate. Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) is used to identify the best method to take decisions in supply chain. Results show that supply chain performance is best under MOUL policy. Based on the results of this study, supply chain members are encouraged to identify the best inventory policy and use that rather than making decisions based on intuition.

Design/methodology/approach This research adopts a two-stage solution approach for UA-FLPs to form BRFBS in the layout. The solution to UA-FLPs is carried out in discrete space. The proposed heuristic method optimises the layout plan for minimising the material handling cost (MHC), and also, it indirectly optimises the space utilisation by reducing the empty space in the layout. The first stage of layout design assumes that all facilities are equal in size and uses quadratic assignment problem (QAP) model. QAP is solved with a simulated annealing heuristic method. In the second stage, a heuristic method is proposed to find the optimum width for each bay and the dimension for facilities. The proposed heuristic method is tested with numeric...

Existing BCCs have many drawbacks related to information transparency and information security. Secured and real-time information sharing in BCC can bring several benefits. The purpose of this paper is to summarise the issues in typical BCCs and to explore the scope of blockchain in the management of BCCs. Design/methodology/approach Issues in the existing BCCs are identified through a narrative review. To explain the potential of blockchain in mitigating these issues, a blockchain-based traceability solution is demonstrated with respect to a particular BCC scenario. The BCC management system discussed in this study makes use of the Ethereum blockchain’s smart contract feature and internet of things (IoT) technology. The smart contract is written in the solidity programming language and tested and validated using the Remix integrated develop...

The proposed game adopts the theme of the traditional beer distribution game to establish a blockchain-enabled scenario for inventory management. A decentralized application (DApp) was prototyped on the Ethereum blockchain to demonstrate the tool.FindingsThe proposed software tool is effective in teaching and training the application of blockchain in inventory management. While interacting with BEBG, players witness how each inventory-related transaction gets secured with blockchain. A basic understanding of the fundamentals of blockchain is a prerequisite for using this too...

Managers tend to follow particular ordering policy seeking individual benefit which hampers the overall performance of the supply chain. Major findings from the literature show that, with the advent of machine learning and artificial intelligence, the trend in this area has been heading from simple base stock policy to intelligence-based learning algorithms to gain near-optimal solution. This paper initially focuses on formulating a multi-agent four-stage serial supply chain as reinforcement learning (RL) model for ordering management problem. In the final step, RL model for a single-agent supply chain is optimized using Q-learning algorithm. The results from the simulations show that the RL model with Q-learning algorithm is found to be better than Order-Up-To policy and 1–1 policy.

This article proposes an application of Simulated Annealing algorithm for Flexible Bay Structure ... more This article proposes an application of Simulated Annealing algorithm for Flexible Bay Structure (SA-FBS) based Unequal Area Facility Layout Problems (UA-FLPs). Initially, MILP model of UA-FLPs with FBS is solved using LINGO software, due to complexity of the model, LINGO solver is not giving the optimal solution in a reasonable time. Then, the proposed SA-FBS is developed and applied to test the UA-FLPs reported in the literature. SA-FBS method has either given the same or better solution as compared to the solution reported in the literature. The proposed SA-FBS computational timings are competitive as compared to other meta-heuristics timings reported in the literature.

Design/methodology/approach The review is based on 166 papers published from 1953 to 2021 in international peer-reviewed journals. The literature review on FLPs is presented under broader headings of discrete space and continuous space FLPs. The important formulations of FLPs under static and dynamic environments represented in the discrete and continuous space are presented. The articles reported in the literature on various representations of facilities for the continuous space Unequal Area Facility Layout Problems (UA-FLPs) are summarized. Discussed and commented on adaptive and robust approaches for dynamic environment FLPs. Highlighted the application of meta-heuristic solution methods for FLPs of a larger size. Findings It is found that most of the earlier research adopted...
