Summer Programme

‘Data in Fluids’

Cambridge

10th July – 18th August 2023

A total of 26 attendees from across the UK came to Cambridge for 6 weeks to attend lectures and tutorials, and, working in small groups, carry out scoping studies for future research projects on a wide range of topics in fluid dynamics:

  • Fluid-driven buoyant granular flows
  • Predicting attachment and removal of contaminants from surfaces by fluid flows
  • Learning the rheological parameters of blood from MRV data
  • Hydraulic jumps, mixing, and waves in gravity currents
  • Instabilities in rotating immiscible superfluids
  • Identifying and predicting the occurrence of oceanic submesoscale vortices
  • Data-driven modelling of coherent structures in shear flows
  • Momentum and scalar transport of the flow past realistic canopies

Lecture courses and hands-on sessions were given on data collection and processing:

Data collection

  • Dr Christina Vanderwel (University of Southampton)
  • Dr John Lawson (University of Southampton)

Data processing

  • Dr George Rigas (Imperial College London)
  • Dr Urban Fasel (Imperial College London)
  • Dr Lucas Lacasa (IFISC, Palma de Mallorca, Spain)
  • Prof Matthew Juniper (University of Cambridge)

In addition, Dr Adrien Lefauve gave a practical overview of PIV at the GK Batchelor Laboratory in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.
