The purpose of this paper is to break down the two styles of fandom, curative and creative, and theorize on how and why these fandoms tend to be more male or female using gender and media theory.

The hyperobservant consulting detective and his loyal friend John Watson have been so widely popular that their narrative has become an archetype for countless works of literature, film, and television. Not only has Sherlock Holmes been of great interest to creative works, but the world of Sherlock Holmes has also fostered an enormous amount of academic and sociological study. Issues of gender, class, race, imperialism, and queerness have all been investigated through the writings and works of Sherlock Holmes:

Stephenie Meyer's Twilight, the first book about the love story between human Bella Swan and vampire Edward Cullen became a cultural phenomenon: spawning four following novels, five films, and an explosion of affiliated material. Additionally, the Twilight Saga created a wave of new fiction directed towards young adults, and young female adults in particular: supernatural romances. Vampires, werewolves, and angels quickly became the objects of desire for female protagonists in young adult (YA) novels. This new surge of supernatural fiction, however, did not come without problems.
