McMaster University is excited to announce a new mascot today, reflecting the university’s priorities of excellence, sustainability and community engagement.
Starting April 14, McKeever, a peregrine falcon, will take over all mascot responsibilities from Mac the Marauder.
McKeever is a peregrine falcon who nests on a ledge of the Hamilton Sheraton Hotel. With her mate, Judson, she’s successfully raised several broods of chicks here, with many named after Hamilton neighbourhoods – including Lawfield, Winona, Charlton and Simcoe – reflective of her long-standing connection with the city.
Mac, who has been the official mascot for decades, said he is proud of the time he’s spent at every Marauders game, Welcome Week and Homecoming.
He’s looking forward to a quiet retirement in Cootes Paradise and spending more time with family.
April Fool’s! Don’t worry, Mac the Marauder is not going anywhere. 🦅
McKeever is a real Peregrine Falcon, though, who has been successfully raising chicks in downtown Hamilton for many years with the assistance of Falconwatch Hamilton.
She’s currently sitting on this year’s clutch of four maroon eggs (yes, really, they’re maroon).
Since 2015, McMaster University’s David Braley Downtown Health Campus has served as a home base for the volunteer team, and continues to provide major assistance to Falconwatch.
