Rufus leafed through the papers in front of him, lifting one after the other to stare at it before putting it down again, to take it once more a moment later, a grave expression on his face, as if he was fighting an internal battle.
“Tseng,” he finally addressed the two figures standing silently in front of his desk. His voice was grave and sad, the name coming out as barely more than a deep sigh.
“Sir?” Tseng replied calmly.
Rufus looked up, letting his gaze sweep over Tseng and Rude, looking clearly uncomfortable with whatever he had to say. “I have your medical report here.”
A breath of worry started to rise in Tseng. The medical examinations where done on a regular basis, but usually they weren’t mentioned at all, if nothing was amiss. For Rufus to have ordered him to his office to talk about the results couldn’t mean anything good for him.
“I asked Rude to accompany you because I know it concerns him too,” Rufus continued, casting a nearly apologizing glance at Rude for what he had to say. There was nothing to see behind the dark sunglasses; but Tseng clearly was in a state of alarm, muscles tense and standing even straighter than usual.
“I…” Rufus paused for a moment, just for the effect, collecting his mind and energy before continuing. “I hate to say this to you, but…” He stopped, lifting the papers of Tseng’s medical report again, looking at them once more, as if staring at them long enough would change the results. “I fear it is quite clear…”
“What is it?!” Tseng asked, his voice carrying just an edge of fear, clearly impatient and uncomfortable.
Rufus sighed deeply, slowly shaking his head as he studied the papers, then he abruptly put them down, looking at Tseng. “Tseng, this report says you’re pregnant.”
Silence filled the room. Tseng didn’t move, clearly taken aback. “Pregnant?”
Rufus face twisted in painful sympathy, watching his Turks. “I fear the report is quite clear on this.”
“Sir, how can I be… pregnant,” Tseng asked, feeling a strange reluctance against the word. “I am no woman.”
Rufus sighed deeply, his expression growing even more pained and uncomfortable. “Well, you know… We always knew about the possibility of side effects of the treatments you were subjected to.”
“But you said there weren’t any,” Rude said now, a sharp edge to his voice.
“I said that we didn’t *know* of any.” Rufus paused for a few seconds. “Now, it seems, we do.”
He watched Tseng carefully, seeing his throat move as he swallowed hard.
“Are you sure, sir?” Tseng asked, his voice slightly strained.
Rufus nodded quietly.
“And… what about me, sir?” Rude carefully asked.
“You?” Rufus looked at him surprised, as if he didn’t know what Rude could possibly think.
“You ordered me to come as well.”
“I did,” Rufus agreed. “I thought you needed to hear this as well.”
“So I am pregnant too?” Rude’s voice was calm, but Rufus knew him well enough to know that internally, it would look different.
“Pregnant?” For a moment he stared at Rude, seemingly surprised, until realization dawned. “Oh no. You aren’t. I wanted you to be here, because Tseng and you…” He didn’t finish the sentence, but he didn’t have to. He saw the two of them exchanging glances as they realized they had suddenly gone from lovers to soon-to-be parents.
“Is… there anything else?” Tseng asked as refined as he could.
Rufus shook his head. “This is the only thing you needed to know.”
Tseng slightly inclined his head towards his boss. “Thank you, sir.”
Rufus answered the gesture, watching the two Turks turn around and leave the room.
He waited for a few moments to be certain they wouldn’t return immediately before he allowed his expression to slip. He grinned evilly. They wouldn’t be of much use for the next few days, trying to come to term with the new situation, but that was worth it. He would let them talk and rack their brains about the pregnancy for a few days until he told them that Tseng’s medical report had ‘accidently’ been swapped with another’s report.
That would teach them keeping him awake all night long with their screams and moans.
