The use of German language on these fragments and the depiction of astronomical/astrological symbols made it relevant to look for a German astronomer. The working hypothesis was that this could be a 15th century calendar either by the German mathematician and astronomer Johannes Müller von Königsberg, also called Regiomontanus (1436-1476), or the Austrian astronomer, mathematician and early instrument maker, Johannes von Gmunden (ca. 1380-1442). However, it turned out to be the German doctor and astronomer Lucas Bathodius (c.1541-c.1598).

As can be imagined, this volume rises to the high academic benchmark set by the series and is both beautifully set out and richly illustrated. The subject matter is interesting, to say the least, covering the interface of optics, ethics and art in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The interplay between optics and art has been much discussed in the context of the Renaissance, but sparsely covered in a medieval framework. Adding ethics into this mix only increases the anticipation of what this book might contain. In this volume Herbert L. Kessler and Richard G. Newhauser, two distinguished scholars on the senses, optics and medieval art, have assembled nine essays in total. The essays were selected by the editors for their relevance in examining afresh the introduction of «ancient and Arabic optical theories» and how these transformed thirteenth century thinking about vision. These papers look at how such apparently conflicting subjects as science and theology could be reconciled at the University of Paris and elsewhere. Finally, they look at the effect that these developments had on preaching and sermons and those who learned about optics through these mediums.

This has led to the assumption that Northern Europe stood aside from the mainstream of scientific knowledge in the Middle Ages, when in fact the region was a vital part of the medieval network of scientific scholarship. This important volume aims to redress the balance in scholarship by bringing together for the first time a collection of studies on medieval scientific knowledge that focuses on both Scandinavia and England.
The essays gathered here examine topics as wide-ranging as the intellectual network between Denmark and Paris; the role of Dominican friars in spreading scientific knowledge in Scandinavia; the practical application of technology by English armourers; fragments of scientific manuscripts found in early modern Swedish documents; the use of scientific volumes and descriptions of university life in medieval Icelandic literature; and fresh insights into the careers of the English scientists Roger of Hereford, Roger Bacon, and Robert Grosseteste. Together, these papers show the dynamism and depth of science in the medieval North, and offer new insights into how scientific wisdom travelled through, across, and between the peoples of this region.
