The process of communication implies information exchange, mutual influence, and evaluation of sp... more The process of communication implies information exchange, mutual influence, and evaluation of speakers. An addressee is an important participant of this process, yet little is known about him as a person who receives and evaluates an addresser's utterance. This is particularly significant because the addressee influences the further course of communication by his/her own responses due to the rules of turn taking. An evaluative response is thus an evaluative speech act that serves as the perlocutionary effect of an addresser's utterance and simultaneously expresses some intention concerning an interlocutor. The present paper aims to identify, classify and analyse the types of evaluative responses from a pragmatic perspective. The empirical material consists of 30 modern American and British novels, or 3400 dialogues containing evaluative responses. The theoretical basis of the investigation integrates the main principles of pragmalinguistics and speech act theory. In view of this, we suggested a pragmatic typology of evaluative responses based on an addressee's speech reaction to the received stimulus. The study claims the universality of an evaluative response as a speech act. It may provide not only emotional perception of reality but also contribute to its adequate comprehension and even exert direct or hidden influence on verbal and nonverbal actions of an interlocutor.

The study first provides an overview of contemporary metaphor theories. Then it describes metaphor identification and processing procedures that are widely used in modern investigations. The next part concerns the research of metaphor in various types of discourse. Finally, we offer some concluding remarks and suggestions for further studies.

In that connection, the author singles out typical conceptual metaphors in proper and manipulative evaluative utterances and considers their examples. The research concludes that conceptual metaphors make proper evaluative utterances more expressive, vivid and creative, thus, attracting an interlocutor’s intention. As for manipulative evaluative utterances, the metaphors contained in them help to achieve quicker and greater influence on the interlocutor.

Бобошко, канд.філол.наук ТЕРМІНОЛОГІЧНА ВАРІАТИВНІСТЬ: ПІДХОДИ ДО ВИВЧЕННЯ Варіативність термінів розглядається як частковий випадок варіативності, що є універсальною рисою усього існуючого. Найбільш вивченою у вітчизняному термінознавстві є формальна варіативність, яка проявляється у позначенні одного поняття двома чи більше одиницями з різним ступенем близькості форми. Найбільш дискусійними є питання стосунків між варіативністю та синонімією, еквівалентністю та дублетністю. Семантична варіативність термінів трактується як прояв полісемії і стосується невеликого кола прикладів з категоріальною багатозначністю. Ключові слова: варіативність термінів, формальна варіативність, синоніми, семантична варіативність, термінологія, термінознавство, соціотермінологія, функції термінологічних варіантів.

Визначено поняттєвий апарат дослідження діалогу з урахуванням постулатів прагмалінгвістики та комунікативно-функціональної лінгвістики, виділено комунікативні характеристики діалогічного дискурсу та подано основні класифікації діалогів, які запропоновані відомими сучасними лінгвістами. Окреслено можливі перспективи подальших досліджень елементів діалогічних єдностей, а саме реактивних реплік.

Баллі [10, с. 208], котрий зазначав, що оцінка -це своєрідна реакція на вербально виражене явище чи предмет у широкому діапазоні відносин: залежно від того, чи даний предмет викликає радість або смуток, корисний він чи шкідливий, хороший або поганий, а також чи відповідає принципам моралі. Інтерес лінгвістів до робіт представників шкіл аналітичної філософії (20-60-ті роки ХХ ст.) зумовлений тим, що вони започаткували вивчення проблем семантики, синтаксису і прагматики оцінних слів, їх функцій у тексті, комунікативних властивостей і застосування у повсякденному мовленні [8]. Зокрема, у семіотичній концепції стверджується, що знак може вживатися з інформативною, оцінною, спонукальною та системною метою [21, c. 24]. У цей період під впливом ідей Л. Вітґенштайна сформувалось питання про комунікативну мету оцінного висловлення [28], в дослідженнях встановлено, що «головне призначення оцінних висловлень полягає не в повідомленні фактів, а в створенні впливу», тобто естимаційна складова відображає прагматичний аспект знакової ситуації [149; 208, с. 16]. Ці положення сприяли визначенню умов та інтенцій вживання лексем «добро», «зло», «обов'язок», «бажання», «задоволення» у мовленнєвих актах [88]. Зазначалось, що певна сума якостей об'єкта спричинює його кваліфікацію як хорошого [131, с. 81]. Розвиток дослідження привів до того, що напрямок комунікативного аналізу текстів із оцінною складовою узгоджувався з концепцією значення як вживання слова, що була сформульована в 50-ті роки ХХ століття під впливом ідей «пізнього» Л. Вітґенштайна та Дж. Остіна. Згідно з цією концепцією, значення слова визначалось через відповіді на такі питання: 1) для чого використовується слово?; 2) в яких умовах доречно 19 використовувати слово з даною метою? [28; 147]. Відповідно до цього підходу, в оцінному дискурсі виокремлено дві категорії предикатів, які виконують певні функції та пов'язані з інтенцією мовленнєвого акту: «Аслова» (aptness-words), що позначають властивості об'єктів через ту психологічну реакцію, яку вони викликають у людини (e.g. wonderful, terrible, boastful, joyful, annoying, generous etc.), й протиставлені дескриптивній лексиці, та «Джі-слова» (gerundive words), які «вимагають» від людини певних дій (e.g. approving, disgraceful, praiseworthy as well as blameworthy etc.) [210, с. 64]. Таким чином, значення оцінних предикатів, тобто те, що залишається після експлікації їх фактичного (дескриптивного) змісту, зводиться до комунікативного наміру відповідного МА [189]. Вивченню оцінного прикметника good «хороший» і його антонімів присвячено праці [213; 218; 220]. На підставі концептуального аналізу оцінного предиката виокремлено такі різновиди оцінних висловлень: інструментальні, технічні (оцінки майстерності), оцінки користі, утилітарні, медичні, гедоністичні [218, с. 66]. Стверджується, що good не позначає певної природної властивості, тобто характеризує вже готовий об'єкт. Отже, створюється враження, наче good пов'язаний зі своїм об'єктом складнішим і менш безпосереднім чином, ніж інші предикати, як, наприклад, yellow [213]. Прикметнику good притаманний відносно високий «ранг», оскільки він зустрічається на самому початку ланцюжка прикметників, які позначають певний іменник [220, с. 203]. Такий ранг good пояснюється його широкою лексичною сполучуваністю [220]. Для розвитку можливостей вивчення категорії оцінки потрібні були певні умови, які б зацікавили науковців і прискорили дослідження цього важливого аспекту діяльності людини. Таким «поштовхом» став «прагматичний поворот», започаткований на рубежі 60-70-х років XX ст. працями засновників теорії мовленнєвих актів Дж. Л. Остіна [147], Дж. Р. Серля [201; 202], Г. П. Ґрайса [167] та представників теорії
