In Singapore, there are a few Chinese temples than are built more than 100 years ago. Some of the design elements within them have lost its meaning due to the lack of proper archiving and documentation. Focusing on three Hokkien architectural-style temples in Singapore, this paper explores, archives and analyzes a series of architectural design elements through a four-steps approach. Focusing on the context, aesthetic and stylistic progression, it aims to strengthen the study of traditional visual culture that allows insights of Singapore origins. And also serves as a platform for better understanding of local culture materials that might reveal Singapore's relations with China. As well as to stimulate interest and open up sufficient conditions for the development needs of the future generations.

It attempts to ascertain if the use of prototype designs could further enhance the children's awareness or mindfulness, and emotional wellbeing. Children's emotional and behavioural problems have become a growing concern. These problems are related to the difficulties children face in controlling their emotions, which may lead to psychological problems in adulthood. This indicates the need to help children understand feelings and how to self-regulate emotions. A pilot design project was conducted to explore the connection between mindfulness-based practice and emotion regulation in children to develop usable mindfulness-based prototype designs. Preliminary findings indicate storytelling to be a mindfulness-based prototype design that can benefit children in terms of emotional regulation. To fully realize the potential of mindfulness-based design interventions may require the development of more robust and rigorous activities and thorough analysis.

Development of research cultures in design schools can be confusing due to the currently formative of design research. This study therefore, is motivated to understand the nature of design research from the fundamental levels. This study uses discursive phenomenography as the basis of its research design, to identify and describe thirty undergraduate students’ experiences and conceptions of design research. Four qualitatively different conceptions of design research were identified and described to provide an understanding of current perceptions of research culture in the area of visual communication design.

Phenomenographic method was described by Limberg (1999) as an exploration of the world's phenomena through the different encounters and comprehensions of people and societies. The phenomenographic findings map four qualitatively different ways, namely, Conception A: Process-focused Experience; Conception B: Knowledge and Skills-focused Experience; Conception C: Socially-focused Experience and Conception D: Self Awareness-focused Experience. The research results established an early step in understanding one aspect of the collective conceptions of design research in visual communication design. The findings are of interest to design educators who seek to know more about design research in order to equip design students with the relevant skills contributing to the field of design.

The objective of “knowledgeability” can be met through creating a stronger link between education and research. Furthermore, overall student performance, for example in critical thinking and problem solving, can be improved if research-related activities are incorporated into the curriculum. The aim of this paper is to use inter-national examples to discuss the research- education nexus from four different perspectives, namely context, policy, im- plementation and quality, with case studies from higher education institutions in Singapore and Sweden. We suggest that different integrative technologies can be used to enhance the links, but it will be essential to consider the inputs of training, service and support in using new technology. Interestingly, the...

Twenty-one students were asked to design a package with technology device(s) or nonpackaging materials that can facilitate daily life by focusing on senses, sensitivity, and sensibility. The objective was to identify problems in packaging, redefine the parameters, and guide the design of senior-friendly solutions. The students were asked to explore ways in which design could help enhance the experiences of growing old and create solutions that consider senior-friendly design. The study covered three areas: user-based research, packaging research, and strategic design development. Students discussed and observed packaging difficulties of daily life. When an item was identified, users were interviewed to highlight specific problems. Packaging, materials, and manufacturing processes were also studied in parallel to promote innovative solutions. A total of 21 items were selected for redesign development. This paper describes the student projects, the process, and the learning outcomes."

According to reviews, the design practice in visual communication design education has shifted from an emphasis on training in traditional vocational courses to a focus on research being integral to the course; this prompted this article to examine the use of research in postgraduate and undergraduate programs and evaluate the debate over research methods applicable to the field. This article includes a brief definition of visual communication design, an overview of commonly used methods for visual communication design education such as Action Research and Reflective Practice, as well as an outline of research emphasis in visual communication design at postgraduate level. In addition, this article provides a brief overview on the nature of problem in undergraduate studies, such as lack of appropriate models of research practice in visual communication design education, and also the need for early training in the research discipline for visual communication in undergraduate studies.

Methods: The study was carried out during a curricular change, with one cohort belonging to a new integrated examination and the other to the former non-integrated examination. Forty-eight interviews were carried out among medical undergraduates regarding the role of the examination in the learning process. The interviews were analyzed according to the phenomenographic approach to identify the students' conception of learning. Results: The learning approaches could be categorized in 47 of the 48 students into 4 major groups: application directed, holistic, comprehensive and tactical memorizing learning. The result indicated that comprehensive learning was the most common approach among students following either examination-form; tactical memorizing learning was more prevalent among students following the non-integrated examination and holistic learning was applied more frequently among students following the integrated examination. Nine of the 47 students changed their approaches over time, the majority switching to a comprehensive approach. No significant gender difference was observed. Conclusions: Comprehensive learning was the most common strategy employed and students who changed during the course most often switched to this. However, only a minor change in approach was observed after a switching to an integrated examination, i.e. it takes more than just an integrated examination to change the student's conception of learning.

This research project seeks to celebrate Singlish as a cultural phenomenon, representing the harmonious fusion of Eastern and Western influences. Focusing on experimental typographic design, the study involves third year BFA Visual Communication undergraduates. The threefold investigation begins with the creation of hybrid typefaces, followed by the crafting of Singlish pangrams, and culminates in the design of three-dimensional installations by student groups.
The final designs were showcased at the Singapore Design Festival 2009, where data was gathered through a questionnaire survey, measuring viewer experiences. Rather than advocating for Singlish itself, the research aims to provoke a reconsideration of Singaporeans’ perspectives on their own cultures and heritage in the era of globalization. Additionally, it aspires to inspire students to infuse contemporary design with an authentic Eastern flair, fostering a connection between tradition and modernity.
