In addition, it may help to protect the people against lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress and can be used as an antioxidant agent for the preservation of processed food. The aim of this study was to determine the chemical composition of Algerian Thymus fontanesii essential oil and to test its antioxidant activity. The oil was extracted by electromagnetic induction (EMI) heating assisted extraction and by hydrodistillation, and was analysed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC/FID) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The antioxidant activity was evaluated by three assays mainly: DPPH assay, reducing power and β-carotene/linoleic acid. The yield of the essential oil was varied from 2.1 ± 0.3 to 3.1 ± 0.1% (w/w), and from 1.8 ± 0.01 to 2.6 ± 0.02% (w/w), for the electromagnetic induction heating assisted extraction and hydrodistillation, respectively. Twenty seven components were identified representing 95.6 -99.9% of the oil. Carvacrol (54.7 ± 1.2 -63.9 ± 1.9%) was the major compound followed by p-cymene (9.2 ± 1.2 -17.5 ± 1.2%) and γ-terpinene (8.8 ± 0.9 -14.9 ± 0.8%). The Thymus fontanesii essential oil was found as a significant antioxidant with IC 50 values were ranging from 57.3 ± 1.4 to 236.7 ± 1.4 µg/mL, which were higher than that of butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT) choosing as reference (9.1 ± 1.2 to 67.8 ± 0.1 µg/mL). The obtained results encourage the use of Thymus species with bioactive compounds for further food applications.

Aqueous extracts caused significant reduction in root growth of Lactuca sativa. Seed extract was more effective than aerial part extract. Successive extractions of this plant were performed using solvents with increasing polarities. The methanolic seed extract exerted strong phytotoxic effect on seedling growth, followed by petroleum ether extract of the aerial part. The phytochemical investigation showed that among the organic extracts, methanol extracts of seeds and aerial parts contained the highest amounts of total phenolics and proanthocyanidins. Seeds were rich in linoleic acid followed by palmitic acids. Palmitic, stearic and arachidic acids were the major fatty acids in aerial parts. HPLC-DAD analysis of the methanolic extracts revealed the presence of luteolin in C. absus aerial parts.

This characterization was carried out by analyzing proteins, amino acids, fibers, carbohydrates and mineral elements. The results show that the protein content varies in a range of 17.06-27.05%, fibers 63.45-69.97%, carbohydrates 12.40-17.07% and ash 3.11-3.60% on dry weight basis. The most abundant amino acid in the studied safflower meals is glutamic acid (3.19-3.89% of dry matter), while lysine and methionine are the least abundant. Cellulose and hemicellulose are the most representative fibers (28.16-31.35% and 21.04-21.68% of dry matter, respectively). The main carbohydrate is xylose, whose content varies between 10.56-14.31% of dry matter. The results also show that the studied safflower meals constitute a good source of potassium (6.32-9.51 g kg À1 of dry matter), phosphorus (2.35-4.60 g kg À1), magnesium (2.25-4.25 g kg À1) and calcium (1.53-1.72 g kg À1). Amongst the identified microelements, iron is the major element in all the analyzed samples (53-125 mg kg À1). Moreover, the majority of the studied analytical parameters were strongly influenced by the cultivar factor (p < 0.05). In view of these analyses and pasture shortage, especially during the dry seasons in Morocco, the meal obtained from oil extraction from safflower seeds can be upgraded by the formulation of new animal feed products in this region.

Sun-drying led to a decrease of weight and moisture content, an increase of sugar content, but not affect acidity. HPLC analysis revealed the presence of 22 phenolic compounds (14 phenolic acids and 8 flavonoids), including eight compounds that were detected for the first time. Phenolic acid contents decreased after sun-drying by about 29%, except cinnamic and gallic acids that were increased. Fresh dark fig contained high levels of flavonoids, particularly cyanidin 3-rutinoside and quercetin 3-rutinoside; sun-drying caused decrease in flavonoid contents by about 86%. There are a lot of antioxidant bioactive components besides the phenolic compounds as studied in this work; therefore, the reduction of phenolic compound content by sun-drying could mainly contribute to the reduction of antioxidant activity of the dark figs. Practical applications This work aimed to study the effect of sun-drying, a widely used method for fig drying, on the physicochemical properties, phenolic profiles and antioxidant activities of three dark figs varieties. The sun-drying method allows the elaboration of dark dried figs with required moisture, but causes a significant reduction of bioactive compounds content as well as antioxidant activity. Safety measures are needed to reduce this negative effect.

The study concerns oils of three European olive cultivars (Arbosana, Arbequina and Koroneiki) which were recently introduced in Morocco under irrigated high-density plantation system. GC/MS aroma profiles of analyzed VOOs showed the presence of 35 volatile compounds. The major compounds in such oils are C6 compounds produced from linoleic and linolenic acids via lipoxygenase pathway such as trans-2-hexenal, cis-2-hexenal, cis-3-hexen-1-ol, trans-3-hexen-1-ol, trans-3-hexen-1-ol acetate, hexanal and 1-hexanol in different proportions depending on the cultivar (p < 0.05). In addition, statistical analyses indicate that the analyzed VOOs have different aroma profiles. Arbequina oil has a high proportion of compounds with sensory notes "green" and "sweet" giving it a fruity sensation compared to Arbosana and Koroneiki. In parallel, Arbosana and Koroneiki oils are rich in phenolic compounds and provide relatively bitter and pungent tastes to these oils.

The best ILs in terms of yield (η) and initial rate (v0) are those based on the TFOanion. The 24h yield (24h-η) reached 64.9% in [Bmim][TFO] and 70.9% in [Bmpyrr][TFO] by transesterification while it reached 29.7% and 44.5% respectively in each IL by esterification. [Bmpyrr][TFO] based on the pyrrolidinium cation gave the best results although this cation has been rarely used for biocatalysis. This work has thus highlighted a cation that could be further studied in biocatalysis of glycosylated compounds. The study of the relationship between the structure of the ILs and the v0 and η for the biocatalysis of mannosyl myristate showed that the lipase effectiveness is influenced by the anions while the cations have an indirect influence on the interaction strength between Novozym® 435 and the anions.

Dastarcus helophoroides, which has a relatively longer lifespan compared to other insects, is one... more Dastarcus helophoroides, which has a relatively longer lifespan compared to other insects, is one of the most effective natural enemies of many large-body long-horned beetles. Methuselah (Mth) is associated with the lifespan, stress resistance, and reproduction in Drosophila melanogaster, but Mth is not present in non-drosophiline insects. A number of methuselah-like genes (mth-likes, mthls) have been identified in non-drosophiline insects, but it is still unknown whether they are present in Dastarcus helophoroides. We identified three novel mth-like genes in D. helophoroides: mth-like1, mth-like2, and mth-like5, and carried out bioinformatic analysis based on the full-length nucleic acid sequences and deduced amino acid sequences. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) showed variations in expression patterns of mth-like genes in different tissues (highly expressed in reproductive systems) and at different developmental stages, indicating that mth-likes were likely be involved in reproduction and development. The altered mRNA expression in aging adults and under oxidation, high temperature, and starvation stress, indicated that mth-like genes were likely to be involved in aging and the resistance of oxidation, high temperature, and starvation. These results characterize, for the first time, the basic properties of three mth-like genes from D. helophoroides that probably play important roles in development, aging, reproduction, and stress resistance.
