This chapter takes the reader throughout remote Aboriginal Australia, examining the part music an... more This chapter takes the reader throughout remote Aboriginal Australia, examining the part music and song making plays in community development. It is based upon recent research carried out in the Kimberley, Pilbara, and Central Australian regions of Australia and includes a discussion of the efficacy of combining song making, music and community development. In particular, the chapter will draw out how traditional music and contemporary practices worked in tandem to help reinvigorate Aboriginal communities.

The research sought to provide a comprehensive review of the range and effectiveness of service delivery models designed for or accessed by young people in diverse parts of Australia. Research methods: Research methods included the collection of qualitative and quantitative data and was guided by a Reference Group comprising young people, local government representatives, and a youth work academic. A literature review of local government engagement with young people reveals a shift in focus of local government from property services to human services, and structural and process “reforms” which have required more demanding forms of governance. Len Collard is Professor with the School of Indigenous Studies at the University of Western Australia. He is a Whadjuk Noongar and a Traditional Owner of the Perth Metropolitan area, its surrounding lands, rivers, swamps and ocean, and its culture. He has a background in literature and communications and his research interests are in the area of Aboriginal Studies, including Noongar interpretive histories and Noongar theoretical and practical research models. Len has conducted research funded by the Australian Research Council, the National Trust of Western Australia, the Western Australian Catholic Schools, the Swan River Trust and many other organisations. Len's research has allowed the broadening of the understanding of the many unique characteristics of Australia's Aboriginal people and has contributed enormously to improving the appreciation of Aboriginal culture and heritage of the southwest of Australia. Len's groundbreaking theoretical work has put Noongar cultural research on the local, national and international stages. Bronwen Douglas was a Fellow and Senior Fellow in Pacific and Asian History at The Australian National University for 16 years and is an Adjunct Associate Professor in 'retirement'. She is a historian of the interplay of race, geography, and practical encounters with people and places in Oceania. Her research IndIgenous IntermedIarIes xii interests include the identification of traces of Indigenous agency and the power of place in colonial and elite representations and the use of visual materials and maps as ethnohistorical texts. This paper is set out as a conversation between three people, an Indigenous person and two non-In... more This paper is set out as a conversation between three people, an Indigenous person and two non-Indigenous people, who have known and worked with each other for over 30 years. This work has involved them researching with communities in central Australia and the south west of Western Australia. The discussion concerns itself with ideas and practices that come from three conceptual traditions; English, Noongar and Pitjantjatjara to talk about how to build ngapartji ngapartji ("you give and I give in return", in Pitjantjatjara), karnya birit gnarl (respectful and kind ways of sweating/working with people, in Noongar), between marlpara ("colleagues", in Pitjantjatjara) and involving warlbirniny quop weirn (singing out to the old people, in Noongar). Kura katitj (Introduction and background) The history of outsiders carrying out research with Indigenous Australians is long and often vexed. To say that Indigenous communities do not often benefit from the work of researchers is perhaps an understatement. Although approved by the ethical protocols of universities, much research that is undertaken "on" Indigenous people, Indigenous lands and Indigenous knowledge maintains the longstanding model of "excavating" information, artifacts and insights. This reflects a long and lasting history where the vested interests of outsiders (like government, business, universities, even non-government organisations) usurp the goals and aspirations of Indigenous communities. It also reflects the fact that there are fewer areas of research in Australia where outsiders have invested so poorly in the capability and ethical practices of those they "send" to work with Indigenous communities. This chapter will provide a series of contemplations from a Noongar 1 man and two non-Indigenous people whose research work with communities routinely sees them confronting Ngapartji ngapartji ninti and koorliny karnya quoppa katitjin (Respectful and ethical research in central Australia and the south west)

This paper is about the practice of supporting communities by using arts, performance, photograph... more This paper is about the practice of supporting communities by using arts, performance, photography, filmmaking, language and cultural development. In particular, it is about the work of the Ngapartji Ngapartji project in Central Australia. This project offers us examples of the creative use of film, music and other digital art forms to support social outcomes such as language maintenance, crime prevention and literacy development. It offers an illustration of the dynamic relationship between community and performance and how music, theatre, language and fine art can be used to draw out ‘community’. The paper begins with a taste of a number of the beautiful projects that sat within the five-year community development Ngapartji Ngapartji ‘adventure’.
