Daniel Peretti
I became a student of folklore at in order to study mythology and narrative art. I soon discovered the study of material culture, ritual, and public display. I then spent most of my graduate work merging these interests with the study of media and American culture. The results were a Master’s thesis that combined the study of storytelling and holiday assemblage with fieldwork in Bloomington. My doctoral dissertation returned to mythology in the study of Prometheus in American culture, but drew in the methods and metaphors of material culture to explore and understand the manifestations of the myth across media in the twentieth century. My current work continues to combine the approaches to different folkloric domains in the study of Superman in folklore: specifically in ritual, festival, jokes, and myth.
