Dr. Ahmed J. Abid received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electronic Engineering from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Technology, Baghdad, Iraq in 2002 and 2004 respectively. He also received his Ph.D. degree in “Electronic and Communication Engineering” from University of Basrah, Basrah, Iraq in 2014. He has been working as an instructor in the Dept. of Electronic Engineering, Technical Instructor Training Institute (TITI), Middle Technical University, Baghdad, Iraq since 2006. He has been Head of the Technical Electronic Department at TITI since 2014. Dr. Abid has published many scientific and technical papers in international and national journals and conferences. His research interests include solar photovoltaic farm, renewable energy, energy management, power line communication and embedded system design.

This article presents an Internet of thing (IoT) system, which offers a complete energy consumpti... more This article presents an Internet of thing (IoT) system, which offers a complete energy consumption, monitoring and control. There is a master controller which is a website built with Ajax software to communicate with all the building devices (via a wireless router) which connected to Wi-Fi nodes (ESP8266 nodes) to calculate the consumed energy from each device and compare it with the fluctuated produced energy. The system is designed to keep the consumed energy, lower than the produced energy. This can be achieved by making the user take the decision and divides the building devices into three different priorities (High, Medium and Low). The presented system follows a strategy to reduce the load according to the available power and the device priority.

Lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion) are the first choice in applications that require energy storage d... more Lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion) are the first choice in applications that require energy storage devices because of their high capacity, high energy density, long life cycle, no effect memory, and low self-discharge capability. Li-ion of necessity must be controlled pending operation to be in a safe position and get the best performance, so it must be utilized battery management system (BMS). BMS functionality monitors, controls, and protects the battery pack from over-discharge, active balancing cells, and over-temperature. This paper proposed the charging method built on the fuzzy logic controller (FLC) to set the reference charging current through SoC of cells, also designed discharge controller via FLC to maintain discharge under limiting manufacturing rate with high protection for the battery string. The simulation results illustrate that protection features were the best performance. The proposed charging and discharging methods maintain the battery life cycle because, in charging, the temperature increase impacts the performance; this method change charge current value and in discharge also the effect of rising temperature reduce battery life cycle, this method has given discharge current depending on SoC and TMAX in the pack.

This article presents a robotic cleaner that will significantly reduce the impact of dust on the installed PV systems in these areas. The proposed robotic cleaner is simple, low cost, standalone, self-powered, portable, and connected to the cloud. ESP32 used as a controller that manages the cleaning process and monitors its PV power production, the battery's state of charge, time of the day, and weather conditions. Thanks to the ESP32 features and its ability to connect to the cloud, as an internet of things (IoT), via the ThingSpeak website. All the electrical, mechanical, and electronic design aspects are presented and implemented in this article. The results show the effectiveness and performance enhancement due to periodic cleaning using the proposed robotic cleaner. The results also show that the total percentage of the monthly normalized accumulated losses for the two scheduled cleaning photovoltaic strings with a performance improvement of 15.54% for the weekly cleaned string (WCS) 83.04% for the never cleaned string (NCS) through the tested month.

Battery balancing technologies are a crucial mechanism for the safe operation of electrochemical ... more Battery balancing technologies are a crucial mechanism for the safe operation of electrochemical energy storage systems, such as lithium-ion batteries. Moreover, balancing between battery cells is essential for battery systems' life. Without any balancing circuitry, individual cell voltages can reach their maximum/minimum battery voltage limit faster than others, posing safety hazards. Furthermore, battery capacity reduction can occur when overcharging/over-discharging individual cells. So far, many balancing methodologies have been proposed and discussed in available literature. This paper presents a review of different state-of-the-art cell balancing methods suitable for low voltage applications. The required control complexity, switch stress, balancing speed, cost and circuit size are considered as key aspects. Typically, cell bypass techniques, such as passive balancing, have the lowest cost and require no complex control strategies. In contrast, cell-to-cell balancing techniques can significantly increase the energy efficiency compared to cell bypass balancers, but these come with higher system costs and control complexity.

The collected data from the PV power plant gives a clear vision for the power plant production, array efficiency and fault detection. The presented system offers an electronic load connected to the PV array which is slightly increased from zero to the maximum designated value. It displays and stores all the voltage, current, and power measurements. It also calculates the voltage and current at the maximum power point, and the fill factor. All the measured data are documented within an Excel file on the computer; curves are plotted automatically to give the user a complete vision for the array behavior, power faults and the mismatching of the PV modules can be easily detected from these curves. The presented system describes all the electronic circuit schematics, how to select the appropriate electronic components with the proper rated values and offers a low-cost design that can be implemented with ease.

The system is capable of tracking the sun properly at any position on the earth because of the general nature of the algorithm used in the design. At the same time the system reliability, cost effectiveness, precision and flexibility are taken into consideration.

The limitations and performances of WiMAX network have been considered for designing and then simulated by using OPNET, which based in this paper on many quality of services QoS parameters such as voice-packet end to end delay, as well as throughput. A simulation concentrated on two applications Light video, and heavy video at a square area and simulation time of about five minutes depending on multiple scenarios of WiMAX. A comparison made between WiMAX PCM voice with light video and heavy video data transmissions based on voice delay and throughput and shows the voice with heavy video has a delay less than the delay of voice with light video and the heavy video has larger throughput than light video.

In the last decades, researchers have widely discussed the effects of magnetized water on many bi... more In the last decades, researchers have widely discussed the effects of magnetized water on many biological and industrial aspects; many studies have also examined the effects of magnetization on water physical and chemical properties and shown a slight increase in the water pH level for the drinking water after magnetizations. This article presents a new practical model to magnetize the tap drinking water with permanent, and adjustable magnets to ensure fast and precise results. A new smart system is designed and implemented to calculate the required magnetic flux density, and the exposure time based on the difference in the measured pH level of the water at the inlet and outlet pipes. Three permanent magnets, with magnetic flux densities of 500, 1000, and 1500 Gauss (G), are installed at different pipe routes, with added to a variable magnet on the main water outlet. The results show a promising prototype that is not only processing the water efficiently but also supply much data about the water properties, which can be led to more findings in this field.

The statistics of previous energy production and consumption of a case study city are used in providing the strategy. In the design of the proposed system, home appliances are categorized into three levels of priority, even though it can be more than three. In this article the control of energy consumption is achieved using a real time energy consumption manager (ECM) based on stored data without the need for real time communication. The system which is proposed here is affordable and simple. Also, it does not require grid upgrade or power line communication through the grid.

In this research, a new design is proposed to detect the production of individual PV panel automatically and periodically to evaluate the condition of each panel in the farm no matter how it is connected in the array. The proposed design allows the user to measure the open circuit voltage (VOC), the short circuit current (ISC) and the delivered power for each PV panel in the farm. The offered algorithm allows a monitoring center to track vehicles; diagnoses fault remotely, control the traffic and control CO emission. The system is programmed to scan the on-board diagnostic OBD periodically or based on request to check if there are any faults and read all the available sensors, then make an early fault prediction based on the sensor readings, an experience with the vehicle type and fault history. It is so useful for people who are not familiar with fault diagnosis as well as the maintenance center. The system offers tracking the vehicle remotely, which protects it against theft and warn the driver if it exceeds the speed limit according to its location. Finally, it allows the user to report any traffic congestion and allows a vehicle navigator to be up to date with the traffic condition based on the other system's user feedback.

In the last decades, researchers have widely discussed the effects of magnetized water on many bi... more In the last decades, researchers have widely discussed the effects of magnetized water on many biological and industrial aspects; many studies have also examined the effects of magnetization on water physical and chemical properties and shown a slight increase in the water pH level for the drinking water after magnetizations. This article presents a new practical model to magnetize the tap drinking water with permanent, and adjustable magnets to ensure fast and precise results. A new smart system is designed and implemented to calculate the required magnetic flux density, and the exposure time based on the difference in the measured pH level of the water at the inlet and outlet pipes. Three permanent magnets, with magnetic flux densities of 500, 1000, and 1500 Gauss (G), are installed at different pipe routes, with added to a variable magnet on the main water outlet. The results show a promising prototype that is not only processing the water efficiently but also supply much data about the water properties, which can be led to more findings in this field.

What made matters worse is the frequent power outages caused by many reasons, one of these reasons that Basra considers one of the highest temperature cities in the world. The statistics of previous energy production and consumption of a case study city are used in providing the strategy. In the design of the proposed system, home appliances are categorized into three levels of priority, even though it can be more than three. In this article the control of energy consumption is achieved using a real time energy consumption manager (ECM) based on stored data without the need for real time communication. The system which is proposed here is affordable and simple. Also, it does not require grid upgrade or power line communication through the grid.

Soiling causes faults in the PV panels leading to a dras-tic reduction in the system efficiency. In vast solar PV farms, the detection of faults in an individual PV panel is a difficult task since it is usually done manually. In this research, a new design is proposed to detect the production of individual PV panel automatically and periodically to evaluate the condition of each panel in the farm no matter how it is connected in the array. The proposed design allows the user to measure the open circuit voltage (VOC), the short circuit current (ISC) and the delivered power for each PV panel in the farm. It is also capable of controlling each panel to work at the maximum power point using a built in Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) sub-circuit on each solar panel. The offered algorithm allows a monitoring center to track vehicles; diagnoses fault remotely, control the traffic and control CO emission. The system is programmed to scan the on-board diagnostic OBD periodically or based on request to check if there are any faults and read all the available sensors, then make an early fault prediction based on the sensor readings, an experience with the vehicle type and fault history. It is so useful for people who are not familiar with fault diagnosis as well as the maintenance center. The system offers tracking the vehicle remotely, which protects it against theft and warn the driver if it exceeds the speed limit according to its location. Finally, it allows the user to report any traffic congestion and allows a vehicle navigator to be up to date with the traffic condition based on the other system's user feedback.
