Naureen Mumtaz

Naureen Mumtaz has a doctorate from the University of Alberta in Design studies and curriculum.  Her work involves teaching visual communication design, with a focus on critical design and pedagogy. In her research, she explores design-based research for community-responsive curricula and their relation to complex social issues of intercultural understanding and related cultural pedagogies. Mumtaz collaborates with organizations working for ethnoculturally diverse community populations across the province to integrate design thinking and social design innovation in curricula to promote critical understanding and socially innovative practices. Her transformative design work for social justice and well-being has garnered academic and community recognition and awards.
She believes in pedagogy and research that draws from a thorough understanding of local contexts and epistemologies. In her work, whether interacting with students or in the research settings,  she says, "I enjoy crossing boundaries and linking seemingly unconnected dots."
