In ancient India, complex technologies for forming and firing pottery were developed to meet the ... more In ancient India, complex technologies for forming and firing pottery were developed to meet the challenges of different types of clays and available fuels, as well as diverse cultural and ritual needs. Clays, slips, and firing processes were simultaneously customized through time and space, resulting in innovative region and period-specific specialized wares. While the knowledge of some pottery making traditions was passed from one generation to the next, and can be documented to some extent today, other techniques, such as the manufacture of Northern Black Polished Ware (NBPW), have been lost. Attempts by scholars either to deconstruct this ware scientifically or reconstruct the technique experimentally have largely been unsuccessful. This article is yet another attempt to deconstruct NBPW manufacturing methods, primarily the preparation of the slip, using petrographic XRD, XRF, and microscopy on seven sherds of various shades coming from different sites and times within the peak NBPW period.

In both Newtonian gravity and Einstein gravity there is no force on a test particle located insid... more In both Newtonian gravity and Einstein gravity there is no force on a test particle located inside a spherical cavity cut out of a static, spherically symmetric mass distribution. Inside the cavity exterior matter is decoupled and there is no external field effect that could act on the test particle. However, for potentials other than the Newtonian potential or for geometries other than Ricci flat ones this is no longer the case, and there then is an external field effect. We explore this possibility in various alternate gravity scenarios, and suggest that such (Machian) external field effects can serve as a diagnostic for gravitational theory.

Northern Black Polished Ware in Indian Archaeology: A Study of Spatial and Chronological Distribution

As NBPW was discovered for the first time from the northern part of India; and due to its black c... more As NBPW was discovered for the first time from the northern part of India; and due to its black color and polished/glazed appearance it was named as Northern Black Polished Ware. Although the surface color of 90% of NBPW borders around jet black and brownish black, the remaining 10% range between gold, gold-blue, silver, pink, brown black, steel blue, bronze, orange, purple, deep red, violet, etc. Excavations at Kausambi and Rajghat in Uttar Pradesh, Rajgir, Sonepur, Chirand, and Oriup in Bihar, Chandraketugarh, and Mangalkot in Bengal and several other sites yielded such varied NBPW sherds. Similarly the finds of NBPW is neither limited to north India nor the polish and glaze has been consistent throughout. Agrawal (2009) rightly said, NBPW is an enigmatic ceramic and its very name is a bit anachronistic because it is neither northern, nor polished, nor even black! In spite of this fact the frequency of black shade and color is significantly higher than other shades and color, regarding, the term "polished" used in its nomenclature it may be said that irrespective of shades and color its quality is more or less constant wherever it is found.

This probably suggests the existence ola centralised production unit However, to prove the existence of a centalised production unit, a rypo-technological analysis of the afiefacts recovered coupled with ethnographic survey would be required. The typological aaalysis ofthe objects shows a degree of standardisation based on the usage pattem. Wet chemical analysis aids in understanding the chemical composition of the ore utilized. Micro-structural analysis gives us a clear insight to the existing technical knowledge of iron working.
