I mean, I stalled all the time (mostly because I forgot to put the clutch down while coming to a halt), but I managed steering OK, and a couple of fairly smooth shifts up to second. Apparently down-shifting is harder, so we didn't try that. I also have to learn to actually release the clutch properly, because I was leaving my foot on it to stop the car going too fast (i.e. more than about 5mph).

After I got over the initial nervousness, it was actually reasonably fun. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before?

Went walking in the Lake District. It's very pretty up there.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Last year's resolution was to do something about my finances (read: debts). I managed to pay off about £2,000 of debt (clearing credit cards and getting out of overdraft), so I'm going to call that a yes.

I haven't made any this year. It's very rare for me to make them anyway.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

My older sister had her second child; Harrison Jackson (Harry for short). He is very large for his age.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Not really close any more, but the aunt of an ex-girlfriend, who I got along with well while we were going out.

5. What countries did you visit?

I didn't. That would involve having a passport, which I still have never managed to sort out getting.

6. What would you like to have in 2006 that you lacked in 2005?

My answer to this question last year was "Mental stability. It's not very likely."
Just shows what I know, doesn't it :)

I'm not sure about this one. 2005 was a good year. I think I'll go with more time spent doing stuff, instead of wasting all of my holiday time just lazing round the house (he says, spending a day off lazing round the house).

7. Handling the situation mentioned in the last question without resorting to drinking alcohol. I'm not sure which of those two it is.

9. What was your biggest failure?

I really can't think of anything right now

10. A guy who's always good to go out with and fun to be around.

And then you find out some more about him, about how he is when you don't see him, and it gets very complicated, because this person you like suddenly isn't very likeable. And the people around you obviously don't like him, and you can't argue with their reasons, but you also can't forget that he was your friend, and that he helped you when you were down. So you tend to just clam up when the subject comes up, and try to keep out of it.

He drinks Jack Daniels.

14. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder?

Happier. Much much happier. Re-reading my answers to when I did this last year has reminded me that I was feeling quite bad this time last year, whereas now I feel great.
ii. thinner or fatter?

A little fatter. Some of it may be additional muscle from swimming lots
iii. richer or poorer?

Richer; more accurately less in debt.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Sleeping.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Lying in bed wishing I could get to sleep. My insomnia made a bit of a comeback this year

20. How did you spend Christmas?

At home, with the family. Same as every year.

21. How did you spend New Year's?

See the main bit of the post.

22. Did you fall in love in 2005?

Yes. No points for guessing who with.

23. How many one-night stands?

None.

24. What was your favorite TV program?

Babylon 5. Because I've only just started watching it.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

No.

26. What was the best book you read?

I've read a lot of books in the last year. Many of which were very good. Anansi Boys, the three books in A song of Ice and Fire (need to read book 4 now), and either Sabriel or Lirael

27. Harry Potter 4 was pretty good too.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

For my birthday last year (25) I went to Batfink and had a bad time (I was very miserable at the time, and being in a goth club probably didn't help). Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

I try to ignore celebrities as much as possible.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

Walter Wolfgang being detained under anti-terrorism legislation for shouting "Nonsense" during Jack Straw's speech at the Labour party conference. If you feel like sponsoring me to drown myself by degrees (I used to be a good swimmer, but that was a long time ago, and I've been discovering the hard way that I've forgotten quite a lot of it), I shall probably be around the Beer Festival thing tomorrow (incidentally, there's a beer festival this weekend in Sheffield, starting tonight. thegreatgonzo can tell you more, since, you know, he knows everything about beer).

I may try and set up one of those online thingys; if you really don't want to talk to me but still want to give me money, stick a comment on the post and I'll see how much demand there is.

*Well, it's ten weeks now, but we're on schedule with what we've done so far
So, there's a whole new anti-terrorist bill type thing about to try and move through Parliament. Lots of people who are much better political commentators than me have already started shredding the 3-month detention without being charged, and the "glorifying terrorism" bit, so I'm going to leave those alone, and concentrate on this one:

Those applying for British citizenship must be "of good character"

I have two major objections to this particular bit of legislation, although one of them isn't very serious. I'll start with the serious one:

How are we defining "of good character"?

I mean, how can you define it? Lack of criminal convictions? Doesn't really prove much. Even if they have criminal convictions, that doesn't mean they are not of "good character": a man may be convicted of theft because he steals to feed his family in a country with a big divide between the rich and the poor (such as say, Zimbabwe). A man could also be convicted for standing up against his government in a corrupt, totalitarian state.

What other criteria do we have? A history of inflammatory speech-making? Some other random criteria that the government will come up with to deny citizenship to those it might be convenient to deport later?

Also, how are we going to find out about this person in sufficient detail to judge their character? Information given by the government of the applicant's country of origin about their conduct? Because that will always be reliable. No country could possibly lie about a political dissident so that they could ensure he doesn't get foreign citizenship (and therefore become immune to deportation).

Thirdly, recent terror attacks on British soil have been performed by "clean-skins": those who have had no known connection with any type of terrorist organisation, and who therefore would have been "of good character".

Anyway, argument 2

So does this mean we get to kick out everyone who is "of bad character"?

Let's face it: if they examined the British public on the same criteria (whatever they may be) as they will be examining those applying for citizenship, instead of just giving it because we were born here, half of Britain would be looking for somewhere else to live.

Admitting new citizens of bad character is hardly going to change anything, is it? We've already got plenty who were born here.

"So, you have a history of excessive violence and a disrespect of authority? Don't suppose you're any good at football?"

"So, you seem to have done nothing productive in your country of origin, but instead fed off the state? That's fine: if you could just wear this Burberry cap and this chunky, gold-plated jewellery so that you can be easily identified."

"Frequently violent over minor differences of opinion? Have your citizenship and a Millwall shirt."

"Stupid; intolerant; alcohol problem; violent when drunk, especially to those who are different to you? We can move you to a little town called Rushden: here, you'll need this knife. You'll either get on fine with them, or hopefully take a few of them out."

Ok, rant over. Feel free to pick big holes in it.

Weekend stuff: I am being cruelly deprived of boobook this weekend. I shall probably be begging for sponsorship money on here at a later date, once I have the forms and stuff.

Sunday will be spent in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, where we shall be playing Twilight 2000 :).

And I'll leave you with a couple of links:

For those who don't read elanya, and so haven't seen this: The Lord of the Rings, by S. Fairly uneventful, except for the huge thunderstorm we encountered on one of the motorways (M69 or M40, or possibly both, since I don't pay any attention to which road I am on unless I am navigating). The lightning was incredible: the section of motorway we were on was mostly unlit, and each lightning flash literally lit up the whole sky.

First meeting with the parents seemed to go well.

Saturday: drive from Swindon to Hythe (which actually required me to navigate, using map books and stuff; something that nobody has trusted me with for years). Got there well in advance of the ceremony, so had a quick wander round the town and some food before showing up at the church.

The wedding was very, very religious. Not "we're getting married in a church because it's traditional" religious, but "the couple are both practising Christians who have actually brought down their own pastor/vicar/guy who does the sermon" religious. This heightened my normal being-in-church discomfort*, but their wedding and their choice. I did have to sing though; I'm sure that wasn't fun for anybody who could hear me. Among the songs that we had to sing was 'Amazing Grace', which caused me a moment's confusion: while it is obviously a hymn, popular culture and other things tie it so much to the Deep South of the US that I found it odd to be singing it in England.

We weren't invited to the meal part of the reception, so decided to pop over to Southampton to check in to our hotel. It should apparently take about 30 minutes to make the journey: it took us an hour, partly because the traffic was evil, and partly because we missed the turning that we were supposed to make (I, having not read a map for ages, didn't quite notice the different symbols for 'roundabout' and 'junction').

We found the hotel, checked in, and collapsed for a bit (boobook was tired from all the driving, and I hadn't slept well for the two nights previous). The hotel room was... ok: I've stayed in worse. The bed was comfortable (and the headboard had a weird bit of artwork that bore a strong resemblance to the Silver Surfer), but the shower was evil, and the tap in the sink didn't give drinking water (presumably so that you'd pop down to the bar for bottled water, and then die of a heart attack when they told you it was £2 for a 330ml bottle). Then there was food and driving back to the reception (the bit we were invited to).

Usual reception things: speeches that went on for too long; there was the occasional funny bit though (like the fact that the big food thing we had missed had been a hog roast, which all the innocent Christian types kept referring to as a spit-roast). There was wedding cake (3 layers: one chocolate, one carrot, one fruit. The fruit layer was nice, didn't try the others), beer (likewise), and wandering round chatting to people that I didn't really know (but who were all very nice).

Then there was the throwing of the bouquet (boobook made quite a play for it, which disturbs me ever so slightly) and the seeing-off of the newly-wed couple, shortly followed by the kicking out of the guests. A bunch of us went to the pub for a bit, where I had my beard photographed by a random stranger and we told each other many bad jokes.

Back to Southampton for that sleep thing. It was at this point we realised the other major flaw in the hotel: it was on Southampton High Street, just over the road from what appeared to be a strip club (For Your Eyes Only doesn't sound like a normal pub to me), and near many many pubs. And the hotel was running a disco. And the window was extremely reluctant to shut. Chalk up night 3 of me with little sleep.

Sunday: Up fairly early (boobook, who got more sleep and is also the sweetest person in the world, made me tea in bed, even going down to reception because they didn't have milk in the rooms), breakfast at the hotel, then driving to Swindon for parental meeting MKII (and roast dinner). All went well there, which was groovy. Then it was the long drive back to Sheffield, on which there were a couple of stops because we were both getting very tired by this point. Disturbingly, at one of these stops we bumped into one of my workmates, which was very strange in a small world kind of way.

* I always feel slightly uncomfortable in churches because I'm agnostic-atheist (I don't believe it's possible to prove or disprove the existence of God, or in fact any higher power, and while I tend to work on the principle that there isn't one, I'm aware that my own beliefs require me to acknowledge that I could be wrong about that): being in church reminds me that if I am wrong, God is probably watching me being in church, and possibly isn't too happy about it.

So that was the weekend.

Quick question for English geeks out there: running the spellchecker over the preceding text had thrown up a spelling error for 'practising' (context for those not reading behind the cut, the phrase is 'practising Christians'). Now, as I recall, 'practise' is the verb and 'practice' is a noun, which would mean that my spelling is correct, but Dictionary.com disagrees with me (of course, it's American, so it's probably wrong). Just wondered if anybody out there who knew more about English than me would like to comment on it.

Anyway, it's just about home time now (this post has taken about 2 1/2 hours to write, although I did have to work a bit, and there was a fire alarm as well), so I'm going to go away. Now, proper modern fuseboxes have little switches that you can just switch back on when this happens. Of course, our fusebox is neither modern nor proper, and so still uses fuse wire. So, we buy some fuse wire and have a go at fixing it ourselves. It decides to be uncooperative, so we dig through paperwork until we find the emergency number, call it and get people round to fix stuff. Apparently our wiring is layed out in an intensely crazy manner, and he'd quite like to rip our kitchen floor and walls to pieces to get it done properly. Hopefully he'll fit a new fusebox at the same time.

Anyway, power is restored, and all is well with the world.

Sunday: Powercut. Now this one was scheduled: we had little warning notices and everything. However, after power has returned, the house Internet server (known for various goth reasons as Dawnrazor) throws a sulking fit and refuses to restart. Dawnrazor has always been a temperamental machine, mostly because its processor was purchased from a computer fair, and is either a cheap unregulated and untested import, or received some damage during its fall from the back of a lorry. After a couple of hours of shouting, swearing and threats of violence, it finally comes back up, with a bit of minor hard-drive trouble (had to run a manual fsck on one of the partitions), and possibly with a failed RAM chip. Half an hour later it falls over again: I bring it back up, then it goes again about an hour after that. I finally get sick of this and plug my laptop in to handle routing instead. This means I have a Windows 2000 machine handling my Internet connection. I'm not happy about this.

Monday: everything seems to be fine...

Tuesday: Internet connection dies at about 11am (I know this because I connect in to the home network from work, to check my personal e-mail). smaug_t_dragon gets home before me and phones to ask about admin passwords on the laptop: we get things working again. It seems that at some point the power to the house went again.

I get home and discover the following things:

The plug sockets which live next to the oven and power its electrical bits (it's a gas cooker, but uses mains for clock/igniter/stuff) have been moved, and do not work in their new location.

The fridge/freezer has been unplugged. And the sockets which it plug into have also been de-activated. Which means the fridge has been switched off since 11am (at this point it's probably around 7pm).

The main water outlet from the kitchen (the one that the sink and the washing machine use) is leaking. This may be the cause of Saturday's power problems.

I decided to go for a drink at this point.

Wednesday: The letting agency phoned me about the electricity things, so I mentioned the leaky pipe. I considered venting my spleen about the whole unplugged fridge thing, but my too-niceness jumped in and pointed out that the person I was talking to wasn't actually the electrician who'd done it, and it'd be a bit unfair. They sent somebody round, who fixed the pipes, so we could actually wash up and clean our clothes and stuff.

The /opt partition on my desktop machine went a bit crazy, possibly due to how much it's been shut down without warning recently. My first warning of this was that it kept putting itself into read-only mode: I rebooted, only to see the dreaded "This drive has errors that cannot be fixed automatically. Please run fsck manually on it. Enter root password for maintenance" message. This was very scary, since I keep the majority of my mp3 collection and other random media in /opt/share. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to have caused any major damage; all of the files potentially affected seem to be in /opt/tmp, which (as its name would suggest) only contains temporary files, generally created during program installation.

Thursday: I am informed by text message that our washing line has just broken.

Oh, and our tumble drier actually makes clothes wet. I still really enjoy the Midkemia/Kelewan books (except for some of his more recent stuff: the Conclave of Shadows series is a bit weak).

Dragons of Spring Dawning, by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman: I don't think I have read a Weis and Hickman book that I didn't like. The other Dragonlance books, the Rose of the Prophet trilogy, the Darksword trilogy and the Death Gate cycle are all excellent books: the plots are serious, but there's enough humour in there to stop them being overly dull (such as, say, anything by Robert Jordan).

I picked Dragons of Spring Dawning because it was the one of the first books I'd ever read at the time that killed off a main character, and the first time that I ever remember being genuinely upset about it (the book before it in the series kills another of the main characters, but he was irritating and I didn't like him, so I didn't care).

All the Weyrs of Pern, by Anne McCaffery: ok, so I slated her earlier. It wouldn't be any kind of fair analysis of my book-reading habits if I didn't mention her, and this is probably one of the best books she's ever written: had she ended the Pern series with this book (or at least, ended the current time plot-line and gone back and written other books set in the 2,500-odd years of Pernese history) then I would have been happy (as long as she didn't screw up too much of her own continuity).

I feel that I have to mention Anne McCaffery in here because she is one of the main reasons that I started reading sci-fi: incidentally, I picked up my first of her books because I liked the covers too.

Jack the Bodiless, by Julian May: yet again, an author whose books I discovered by the "random books with good covers" method: I bought Intervention around about the same time that I got Darkness at Sethanon, didn't read it, bought the Pliocene Saga, read it and enjoyed it, then noticed that this book I'd had sitting on my shelf unread for about 2 years was by the same author.

I liked the philosophy in the Julian May books: a lot of the main conflicts in the books aren't generated by people acting in their own self-interest, but are more between groups who each genuinely believe that their own way forward is the best for everybody concerned.

05: Tag five people to do this:

boobook
capt_bowman
damia1
delanthear
kaickul

A couple of links:

I promised somebody a link to the Darth Vader blog: I'd advise downloading the PDF, as it makes it a bit easier to read.

I was going to write something longer about what I've been doing recently: the problem with updating from work is that occasionally you have to actually do some. Maybe if I updated this thing more often I'd be able to use it as some kind of external memory, so that I would have a record of events in my life before they disappear in a haze of alcohol and absent-mindedness. That, however, would require much more organisation and willingness to work than I possess. And sometimes there are things that I would prefer to forget.

Anyway, work tomorrow, so should actually sleep now.
