macOS Big Sur 11.7.11 Update Released Years After Retirement

macOS Big Sur 11.7.11 Update

macOS Big Sur 11.7.11 Update is now available!

Well this is a new one… Apple just released macOS Big Sur 11.7.11 (20G1443) Update!

Apple ended support for macOS Big Sur in September 2023. With this release, Big Sur now ties OS X Tiger (10.4.11) for the most point‑release updates in macOS history. Who would have thought we’d see another update for Big Sur? We did get a hint last week when Apple pushed out several older iOS updates, but I still didn’t expect any new macOS releases. I’m glad I was wrong.

This will allow important services like device activation, FaceTime, iMessage and other services to continue to work after the current certificates expires in January 2027.

I applaud Apple for doing this. We need to recognize that for many people, older computers are their only means of communication. Not everyone has the resources to buy a new device. This update will help those users continue using their Macs and iPhones. It’s especially important to remember how impactful this is in impoverished areas around the world.

Even though Apple updated Big Sur to address these certificate issues, it’s important to remember that the OS is no longer security‑supported. No security updates have been released for it in over two years. If possible, please use OCLP or upgrade to at least the last supported version, macOS Sonoma.

Big Sur Update Quick Overview

  1. macOS Big Sur 11.7.11 Update – This update extends the certification required by features such as iMessage, FaceTime, and device activation to continue working after January 2027.
  2. Big Sur 11.7.11 Full installer is available!
  3. Apple stopped releasing M1 IPSW restore files after version 11.6.
  4. Safari update = 16.6.1 is the latest version available

macOS Big Sur Update Summary

  • New Features – None
  • Resolved Issues – Multiple certificates were updated
  • Security Fixes – None

[FIXED!] Lion Recovery Error Can’t download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X.

Multiple OS X Lion Recovery Errors – Install Error Can’t download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X.

As of 2025, Mac Internet Recovery versions from 10.7-10.13 are online, but have additional issues . In this article we will focus on the OS X 10.7 Lion install issues from Recovery

In my current quest to fix every single macOS Recovery version from 10.7 to 10.13, the most popular version requested was actually OS X Lion! While that article was helpful if you booted to OS X Lion Internet Recovery, users could have additional problems. One of those problems is this error “Can't download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X” This error can happen with both internet recovery and with a USB Installer. You can also get the error ” An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again.

OS X Lion was actually the very first version of Internet Recovery. So it is now the oldest version still online. The fact at Apple is still maintaining Lion’s Internet Recovery server is great, but it is now completely broken.

Keep in mind, this is NOT the Date and Time issue that most articles point to. That fix worked in the past but does not work anymore. So internal recovery (command R) and Internet Recovery are currently unable to download and install OS X Lion in its current state.

Previously I provided fixes and workarounds for macOS High Sierra and macOS Sierra Recovery issues.

The other OS X Lion Recovery problem error is – An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again.
