Subject:And another year fades away...
Time:23:54 pm.
Hello, LiveJournal friends...

I had written myself a note to write a short essay here, looking back over what was quite an interesting year after all, and looking ahead. I may get to it in a few days, since there was more than I thought, when I started writing notes. One of my resolutions is to write more often and be more open about my life. We'll see. I can make no promises.

Things have been a mixed blessing this year and things are slightly better. I'm still in love with citabria, of course, as if there was any doubt of that. I'm very grateful for the activities in my life that give me positive feedback and offer me a chance to work with great people. (TNT and the Intercon LARP community, I'm looking at all of you, in particular.)

But, for now, I'll repeat what I said last year: Happy New Year. Be safe and be well. Remember those who aren't with us any longer. Rejoice in those who have come into our lives.

Six years ago, I married this wonderful woman. This picture was taken shortly after I proposed, May 13, 2007, at Ka Lae on Hawai'i. A year and some later, it was french toast day. I mean, our wedding happened.

Love you, citabria

Iowa 24 - Michigan 21

Couldn't watch it live and the internet radio broadcast was spotty. But, I got blow-by-awful-blow from Dad over the phone and ESPN website snippets.

While the first half was good, thanks to our defense, the second half was miserable. We've never had much offense and the defense just couldn't cope. Michigan blew a 21-7 halftime lead. Now, we're next to last in the Legends division and we'll probably end up in the Cabbage Bowl in Warsaw. Certainly we deserve it this year. (Actually, we won't--but that's a rant about the college football bowl system.)

But, on the bright side, the real Game is next weekend!

Mood: excited.
Gah. Intercon N is a little over three months away and next week will be the first LARP signup. So, aside from the lifting-things-up-and-putting-things-down for the convention, I should decide what to play in.

There's way to many to choose from, and have been for years, so it's hard to go wrong with any choice. So, let's see.

  • Friday evening is going to be my first target. I must play in "While Their Eyes Are Closed" and will be trying for that first. The authors rock and the structure borrows from "Across the Sea of Stars." My second choice is "neon remix 2121" which just sounds fun.

  • Friday late night has nothing. I may have to run something here. Need to check the bookshelf.

  • Saturday morning actually has lots of competition and alternatives. I like "The Prison," "Voyage to Venus," "Shine," "Dying of the Light," "Song of the Fat Man," and "K300: Nyet SOS" and they are all possibilities.

  • Saturday afternoon I really can't look at too hard. There are lots of great alternatives (like "A Song of Mergers and Acquisitions" and "Cirque Du Fey") but vortexofchaos won't let me slip out of running "The Tales of Irnh".) Sigh. The life of a GM is hard.

  • Saturday evening has a few choices but nothing too compelling. "The Other Side of the Glass," "Song of the Fat Man," and "Storm Cell" are my top choices there. I would really love to play "Resonance" again but the GMs probably wouldn't like that because I know too much--it's an amnesia game.

  • Saturday late night has some nice games but nothing that will make me want to trade social time for more LARPs.

  • Sunday morning, unless something really unusual happens, I'll be in ConSlave mode so although there are a few great choices there, I probably will not be playing anything here. "Service" is very tempting as I really want to get more Jeepform in. The Iron GM games will also be here, too, but aren't scheduled yet.

So...some I've got some flexibility in most slots and one clear target for LARP signup opening. Cool.

Michigan and Notre Dame have been playing each other (not continuously, though) since 1887. That rivarly goes on hiatus, again, at least for six years, because of Notre Dame contracting with the ACC for pre-season games. They will be continuing their series with Purdue and State, though, leading Coach Hoke to suggest that they were "chickening out." Their coach, Kelly, trash talked the rivalry suggesting that it was only a "small regional rivalry". Yeah, right. Whatever helps you sleep at night. :-D

[Yeah, I haven't written here in a while. Sorry.]

10 years (and a few hours) ago Georgie started the invasion of Iraq. One could say he wasn't content to pass out large bags of money to wealthy people and decided to burn even more on a bonfire in the Middle East for reasons that were, at best, specious. Certainly there was no clear and present danger or even a credible danger. Like the proverbial elephant, everyone involved came up with their own rationalization. But the blood and treasure we lost, and the stink and stain of what we became, will be with us forever because while those who wanted it to happen had their reasons, none of them cared whether or not it was done well.

"Let me explain.... No, there is too much. Let me sum up." - Inigo Montoya

So, I haven't been journaling much. Partly because of the allure of other social networking sites but also partly because I haven't had that much to say. There have been a few things that I've been happy about, that I don't mention here, but this past year has been one of slow, too slow, improvement. I tried a number of things this year and not all of them worked as well as I would have hoped.

One nice thing that has made me happy this year--and one of the reasons I started journalling--is that I continue to make Intercon happen. Intercon M is going to be huge--I mean, really huge--next year. I know, I'm privileged to be Registrar this year. So big we're going to need two ConChairs (laura47 and juldea). So big we might yet get that bouncy castle. (Kidding--those things are expensive to rent.) At Intercon M, I'm helping to run Collision Imminent! on Saturday and will be running The Road Not Taken in the renewed Friday late night spot. I am really grateful for the LARP community and my friends in it. I have to talk more about those games, soon. (We had a great run of CI! at Brandeis recently.)

And, assuming I can figure out how the new LJ Scrapbook works, I have to post some funny pics of citabria, too. Did I mention that she still makes me happy?

Ah, but enough for now. Happy New Year.

Johnson & Wales Commencement photo citabria had her commencement today for her A.S. degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales. We were at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence which, no surprise, has Dunkin Donuts concession stands. But I digress. It was a happy, fun ceremony. Renee's degree had her sitting near the back of the auditorium but she bounced across the stage when her name was called. (My picture of that didn't come out well.) She hasn't stopped grinning yet.

Afterward we celebrated at Pho Paradise in the Elmwood neighborhood of Providence which was great--I hadn't had Vietnamese cuisine in some time and this was her second in a long while. We also explored the Restaurant Depot nearby, too. We felt like such amateurs--one guy was rolling a half-ton of corn meal and 200 pounds of potatoes out the door as we walked in. On the bright side, we didn't go in with a cart to keep us from buying anything we couldn't carry. We weren't tempted to buy the 50 lb bag of high-gluten flour for $17.00. (Hurm. citabria can carry a 50 lb bag of flour. So that strategy almost didn't work.)

She's already started working on her B.S. in Culinary Nutrition so we'll be back in a couple of years for another photo.

Time:19:12 pm.
Ah, my favorite weekend of the year. We were back at the Radisson in Chelmsford again, which made it feel even more like coming home. (All weekend, I heard stories about the staff telling people that they were very glad we were back and I talked with a few after the convention who told me the same thing.) The weather cooperated this year, too, and it was always nice to see people that I really don't see very much anymore, some of whom are wearing awesome costuming.

I was in ambug666's Triple Blind where I played...no, there is too much, let me sum up...no, can't do that either. "Come to a party full of diplomatic intrigue. This one hour experimental game creates characters from three sets of randomly chosen backgrounds: a base identity, a group or organization, and a cover identity." Okay, the actual intrigue changed about every five minutes and there was an awful lot of laughter, including the GM. It took some quick thinking and a good dollop of improv to both combine the three sets of backgrounds and then deal with everyone else's rationalizations and revelations.

I also managed to get a spot in Alleged Entertainment's Resonance. I had heard a number of good things about it from earlier runs and the twist on the typical "amnesia" game was refreshing. I just went back and read the blurb and realized that I had forgotten about what premise there was which made it even more interesting. This game unfolded slowly so there really was a lot of time to reflect on the situation...and then come to terms with your own character's role in bringing it about. Or, actually, who you ended up being. As the "amnesia" dissipated, the actions you made in the game determined who your character actually was. There were lots of possible results there as well. The GMs, in the post-game discussion afterwards that some characters had more active roles in bringing Some characters had more active roles in the overall story but all of the characters were involved. Slight spoilerCollapse )

So, interestingly, both LARPs I played in this week were different kinds of improv opportunities. The former turned into a slapstick Marx Brothers farce and the latter was a dark apocalyptic drama. Both were really great.

I only played in those two LARPs during the convention. I spent a good chunk of time schmoozing with people, catching up and gossiping, and the rest of the time, with a lot of other great people, Making Intercon HappenTM and Making Intercon WorkTM, which was great in it's own way.

People told me that they had a great time and I did, too. Drove home late in the afternoon on Sunday spent and had some quality time with citabria, who couldn't make it and finally, as several people suggested to me, got a good night's sleep. Intercon is always too short.

(I found myself in a weirdly grumpy mood--as a result of things unrelated to Intercon--Friday evening and wasn't feeling too sociable, despite everyone arriving. I got over that and sincerely enjoyed the rest of the weekend and I think I apologized to everyone that I was not in the mood for then. Also, I haven't fallen asleep in mid-sentence in a while now but I did that on Saturday afternoon. Which was good because that was a long day and I was able to stay alert for my evening game.)

ACLU: 10 Years Too Many
"Ten years have passed since the first prisoner arrived in Guantánamo Bay, making it the longest-standing war prison in U.S. history. Almost 800 men have passed through Guantánamo’s cells. Today, 171 men remain. Fashioned as an “island outside the law” where terrorism suspects could be detained without process and interrogated without restraint, Guantánamo has been a catastrophic failure on every front. It is long past time for this shameful episode in American history to be brought to a close."
ACLU: Gitmo by the Numbers

CREDO Action: Tell President Obama and Congress: End indefinite detention and close Guantanamo.

CNN: Gitmo: 10 years of injustice and disgrace

I was arguing with a while back about Gitmo and he made the observation that America does this kind of detention all the time and that Georgie had just been open and transparent about it. (In part to show those "evil ragheads".) I told him that, if it were true, it was still seen as an extra-legal abberation and no one would think of mainstreaming it like Georgie did as if you were describing what particular breed of donkey you prefer to fuck.

NCAA sends message to Ohio State
But instead of accepting Ohio State's self-imposed penalties, which included vacating the 2010 season, returning bowl game revenue and applying a reduction of five scholarships over the next three years, the NCAA committee on infractions added some punishment of its own. The Buckeyes won't be eligible to play for a conference championship or in a bowl game in new coach Urban Meyer's first season in 2012, and they'll lose three scholarships in each of the next three seasons.
I'm not that surprised the NCAA went further than OSU's self-imposed penalties and that's probably why the NCAA didn't go further. Their sanctions weren't as bad as the NCAA has given to some programs.

But it was Tressel who dragged out the investigation and he'd been a little sketchy even before he got to OSU. I'm sorry that he damaged the reputation of a worthy opponent. Tressel himself gets hit even harder, starting "with a five-year show-cause penalty until December 2016, under which any school that wants to hire him must submit a report to the NCAA detailing why it needs to employ him and how it would monitor him to ensure he doesn't break its rules again." And then even more should he be hired by anyone.
