The Canyons review

Posted : 10 years, 7 months ago on 6 July 2015 12:01 (A review of The Canyons)

Badly acted, badly written, badly shot and badly edited. I watched it because I thought it might have some aesthetic atmospheric quality but it does not. I like Lindsay Lohan but she is sleepy eyed and raspy voiced through out. The cast did not have any chemistry. There is literally no reason to watch this unless you actually get some enjoyment out of films which are horribly put together.

Palme review

Posted : 11 years, 9 months ago on 22 May 2014 08:55 (A review of Palme)

I am not one for historical-political documentaries but this was very, very well done. Going into it I was like do I really care about some rich while male politician and all the political bullshit and ugh the boredom that will surely begin. But I was wrong. The film doesn't just cover Palme's life (a man who in contrast to US politicians seemed to legitimately stand for what he believed) but the history of his time period: The assassinations of Martin Luther King and John F. Kennedy, Vietnam, Chile, social change, the works. It was fascinating to watch the world literally changing before your eyes and very informative.
The movie starts with Palme in an interview saying he believes his goal and the purpose of politics is to make life on earth decent for people. Having a movie start by echoing your own closely held beliefs is a pretty good sign.
Palme was anti-racism, pro-immigrant, absolutely anti-violence and he fought for peace. He was a charismatic socialist known for getting himself involved in one too many issues.
It's a bit ironic that they had Desmond Tutu in the documentary- a man who's famously said that to be neutral in times of oppression is to side with the oppressors.
The movie comments that Palme was very much hated by a great many but doesn't delve too deeply into the justification for such hate, simply passing it off as a fad to hate the prime minister. The part where the sons are talking about how their classmates told them they hoped their father would die was quite horrible. But the most shocking was definitely the images from the US bombing Vietnam.
I wondered over the ending for a little but I understand it now as him saying that no matter how prejudice is couched in intellectual theory or ideology, prejudice is prejudice is prejudice.
It was a very good movie.

Coffee Town review

Posted : 12 years, 7 months ago on 11 July 2013 11:09 (A review of Coffee Town)

The comedy was very good but the other parts of it- when it tried to be serious- were kind of mundane. I would recommend watching it for some of the clever jokes, not the storyline or the characters.

The Day of the Jackal
Not usually into crime serial murderer shows but this one was pretty entertaining without being too dark. Basically about the police trying to catch a sniper who takes out hits rich people pay him for. Edie Redmayne cannot look scary as hard as he tries, which suits me just fine. Lashana Lynch was actually excellent in this. She suited the role so well. I hope she gets more roles. In the last ep the show kills off a lot of good characters and it honestly makes me want to watch the show less. Like it tried to be GoT but just ended up ruining what gave it its soul. Idk I feel like the pay off of the show being just we're gonna suddenly kill half the cast you like... It wasn't satisfying at all. I'm disappointed after all the build up. +Apparently many didn't like Bianca's character which shocks me. I swear to god a male character can kill a bunch of people and do so much sketchy crap and it's no issue, but if a female character is just the littlest bit morally grey (or racialized), too many people lose their minds. Smh. I would watch 5 more seasons of her happily. I'm actually sad about it.

Culpa nuestra
Again, a movie so poorly written it feels unprofessional. I truly don't understand how such a popular franchise got okayed with this writing?? Honestly the actors are great, the chemistry is sizzling, it's beautifully shot, it has its own vibe and nice soundtrack, but the writing is soooo bad. It's so obviously based on a book in the way that they will throw things in just to cover it. Like legit 30 seconds to you were in a coma, now you're not, moving on. The first half of the movie has a pretty regular pace and then it's like oh no, we have to fit in the rest of the story? Bam, bam, coma, attempted murder, attempted murder again, wedding, the end. Honestly would have benefited from being split into two movies, or even better, different writing. And honestly for a steamy franchise, this movie was pretty low in steam. I mean the actors sizzle just talking to each other, but yeah. It felt wrapped up too suddenly. And it's never really explained why Noah doesn't just tell him in the first place or how she thought leaving the city would do anything?? Huh? And that whole car chase scene was just like ???!!! These people are about to be parents? THESE PEOPLE? Some of the scenes just flat out made no sense and weren't realistic to humans. And the whole exes trying to kill them drama was honestly unnecessary tacked onto what had been for most of the movie just a relationship drama. The cars were thrown in without any actual basis in the plot as if to be like, hey remember this is also a fast car movie, for some reason??? It was just eeeh. Some movies are truly, truly held up by their cast. Like you could put these two into anything and they would make it sizzle with charisma and angst. It's a shame they don't seem to get on in real life because I would actually support this movie being remade with a different storyline.
