Notes: My second ever attempt at a crossover fic for FF...so I apologize if it is horrible or anything like that! I'd originally gotten the idea for this story in the fourth game, when Breyzy suggested that I try writing a Tekken/Dissidia multi-chapter story...that fic idea kind of fell through because I'm not too great with multi-chapter fan fics, but the one concept that really stayed in my head from that idea was having a bonding interaction between the Warrior of Light and Zafina. I was originally attempting to write this interaction out in some way for the Crossover challenge at ultima_arena, but it kind of got a life of its own and became its own story by the time I was finished with it...so I figured I'd post it here before I chickened out and deleted it, orz. XD Zafina is a character recently introduced into the Tekken series in the sixth game: she's an assassin with a mysterious personality, but she actually is working to prevent the whole world from falling into calamity thanks to the actions of two of the series' main antagonists...so she's rather interesting in regards to her thoughts and viewpoints on things. For some reason, I always just thought interactions between her and the Warrior of Light could possibly be pretty neat to write out given how differently they tend to respond to things and their differing viewpoints--which is how this story came about. Essentially, I just used the story concept of Dissidia (characters from differing worlds having to find common ground and fight together on a new battleground) as the reasoning for the two of them meeting...so there's really no need to know too much of the Tekken mythos to understand the fic's plot, given how it's more focused on the FF side of things. ♥

Title: The Infinity Cloister
Summary: Me WMG-ing about the plot-potential of the Labyrinth in DDFF.

[The Infinity Cloister]The structure was ancient; its entrance standing in the same place it had been ever since its discovery by humans and long before then. It was a tall, foreboding archway, covered in all manner of strange glyphs and symbols though the arch itself was not carved and hewn by human hands but rather by magic: the entrance to the Labyrinth.


There were many stories concerning its origins and nature, some true, some less so. It was certainly true that it was sapient to an extent, being able to grow and alter its own infrastructure to suit its needs, the possibility of corridors upon corridors stretching out into infinity a very real and ultimately dangerous prospect for foolhardy adventurers eager to make their mark on the world by delving into the Labyrinth.

Other stories told that the Labyrinth had originally been intended as an elaborate trap of ritualistic sacrifices intended for the one imprisoned within its bowels and that the imprisoned itself was said to be a beast of incredible power, so much so that its release would herald the Twilight of the Gods.

Well, Shinryu considered that last theory to be utter nonsense but in light of his nature and other things besides, it was just as likely to be true. But then, all stories are true: the challenge was finding out which stories never happened.

That said, the prison bit was real enough where the dragon-god was concerned, its lock an elaborate magical seal he could not hope to break without outside intervention. For all his power—considerable, as he was a magnificent specimen of a dragon-god, out of the same clutch of eggs as his goody-two-shoes brother Bahamut—Shinryu himself could not break the lock, as its settings included invulnerability towards him. An inconvenience, to be sure, but one that could be easily bypassed if the urge to break free fully took hold.

It never did though, for despite his circumstances the dragon-god was pleased with the arrangement. The labyrinth’s magical nature allowed Shinryu some influence over it, enabling him to mold its paths as he wished with a thought. It was an entertaining pastime, trying to think of increasingly creative ways to increase the difficulty of delving the Labyrinth; he had even gotten the demons that comprised the lock to participate.

Demons would be demons, of course, and their contribution was delightfully sinister and characteristic of them and theirs: forcing wayward adventurers to give up their equipment and summonstones, they would be forced to proceed with only their bodies and magical knowledge as their weapons, braving the hallways on their own until they happened upon a possible ally.

Of course, even in such circumstances, the strain would inevitably kill them and he would happily claim their souls for his own nourishment. Both parties reaped the rewards: he would claim the souls and memories of the victims and the demons would sate their sadism, all in all a perfect arrangement. Occasionally, Shinryu would decide to adorn the corridors with the remains of the fallen but it was a badge of mockery to their memory rather than the memorial it should have been.

Eventually, all but the world itself would forget the labyrinth’s location or the special words to reveal its doorway to the world. All would forget what it housed in its depths or the significance of its lock. There was always the chance that eventually, the Labyrinth would meet its match and its purpose would be defeated.

But that possibility was a long ways off. And that suited Shinryu just fine.

It had been the work of a moment to sneak right up behind him as the man as he waited for the bus ride home but even more difficult had it been to focus the Shout into a Whisper. Still, the results of watching Kain Highwind being blown down the street with the force of Typhon’s breath had been immensely satisfying.

2. Ice Flesh Statue/Iiss Slen Nus

“Did you just turn that behemoth into an ice sculpture?”
“Yes. We should keep moving or else Tifa will ban me to the couch for a week.”

3. Fade Spirit Bind/Feim Zii Gron

The world became a blur as Lenne leaped off from the highest point in the world, her ethereal form seeming to merge with her surroundings. For this moment, she was something beyond mortal ken.

4. Hero Champion Legend/Hun Kaal Zoor

Their Shout was a song that called forth all the fallen who preceded them in the cycles. For perhaps the first time in his long life, Shinryu tasted fear.

5. Sky Spring Summer/Lok Vah Koor

He knew he should not be meddling with the weather this way but Kain hoped Bahamut would let it slide just this once, if only because the sudden lack of rain caused the monk to smile in a way that robbed him of breath.

6. Mortal Finite Temporary/Joor Zah Frul

Shinryu may have been a god amongst dragons—an already immortal race—but Lenne Costas was satisfied knowing that his mind could be broken all the same.

7. Time Sand Eternity/Tiid Klo Ul

Everything slowed to a crawl around him as he made each blow. It would only be for a short while but as of this moment, Kain Highwind was Time’s lord.

8. Storm Wrath Lightning/Strun Bah Qo

Her laughter was lost amidst the rumblings of thunder and cracks of lightning. Likely she would come down with a cold later but now, Lenne was Ramuh.

9. Whirlwind Fury Tempest/Wuld Nah Kest

One moment, he was facing a trap corridor. Then, before Siegfried’s eyes, Kain simply surged through it, coming to a stop far beyond the corridor’s end.

10. Animal Allegiance Pack/Raan Mir Tah

She was usually not a friend towards tonberries but for now, she was one of theirs and that was all that mattered.
