This paper takes a look into early records of the Salem Witch Trials, in order to trace the way t... more This paper takes a look into early records of the Salem Witch Trials, in order to trace the way the "witch" was first discussed by scholars, prior to the 19th Century. How was she examined? Why was she villainized? Then, this work dives into how the Victorians represented the image of the witch in Salem MA, in order to turn the town's tragic past into a space of healing, forgiveness, and celebration. How have authors, historians, and townspeople changed the image of the witch in Salem? How did they choose to remember, and write about, the Salem Witch Trials? This paper discusses this topic heavily, because it will help trace the way in which the media represents witches today, and why Salem MA changed from being a sleepy puritan town-to a tourist hub, where the image of the witch is honored heavily.

The Media Darling Suffragette, Princess Sophia Duleep Singh: Britain’s Radical Punjabi Feminist

One of the key players of the British Suffrage Movement, Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, is still l... more One of the key players of the British Suffrage Movement, Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, is still largely ignored in our historical consciousness. Her contributions and her impact on the Suffrage Movement is often overlooked in favor of continued dominant white narratives. Sophia’s celebrity status as Princess of the British Punjab region and goddaughter of Queen Victoria, turned her into an invaluable asset to Emmeline Pankhurst and her group, the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU). Already a media darling prior to her involvement with the movement, Sophia’s celebrity status was used as a tool to garner more press for the often mocked and ridiculed cause for women’s votes. This study focuses on the press attention Sophia gained for the British Suffrage Movement and her pivotal role as celebrity ally to Emmeline Pankhurst’s inner circle of suffragettes. Princess Sophia Duleep Singh’s active contribution to the campaign for women’s votes is analyzed through the use of her image. Importantly, it is duly highlighted that the face of the British Suffrage Movement, was at one point in history, a radical brown woman empowered to fight for the enfranchisement of women around the world.

Revels is an annual dinner and tournament hosted through the oldest club at Drew University: That... more Revels is an annual dinner and tournament hosted through the oldest club at Drew University: That Medieval Thing (over 30 years of active performances). Guests are entertained through a Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament style of story telling, where they are entertained with Medieval warfare, combat, acting, plays, pubsinging, whilst enjoying a five course meal, hosted inside of Drew's historic neo-gothic S.W. Browne--The Great Hall building! Featured in many popular films and tv shows, such as the Sopranos and Friday Night Lights, this location is a prime space for entertainment and staged theater productions. 2015's plot, written by Minna Nizam, centers around the Holy Roman Emperor, who invites the Pope of Rome to dinner in Germany to settle their differences and sign a peace treaty. However they both have egos the size of Russia, and once a tragic event occurs at the table the feast turns into a nightmare for the Emperor and his household. The dramatic tensions within the Emperor’s family do not help either as the festivities progress!

Charlotte Canda and Mary Rogers: Two "fallen women" in Victorian Culture

The Victorian era was a time of vast American/British transatlantic ideas, thoughts and philosoph... more The Victorian era was a time of vast American/British transatlantic ideas, thoughts and philosophies during the reign of Queen Victoria (1819-1901). Through its visual culture, the archetypes of the loving wife, doting hardworking husband and their playful sweet children who filled the household, were valued as ideal representations of life during this time period. Any Victorian citizen who did not actively conform to this formula of white middle-class domestic bliss, were portrayed as social deviants in art and literature. With this in mind, artists of the time employed these archetypes in their writings, paintings and sculpture in order to convey moral messages to their audiences. Often, these artists also included examples of women who strayed from the path of domestic harmony as dire warnings for the Victorian public. This popular trope in Victorian visual and literary culture is referred to as the “fallen woman.” The "fallen woman" and its ties to two Victorian era women will be examined within this thesis. This paper will analyze the Victorian trope of the “fallen woman” in order to tie this into the visual and literary depictions of two young women who died tragically in New York City in the 1840s: Charlotte Canda (1828-1845), a young seventeen year old debutante, and Mary Rogers (1820-1841), a cigar saleswoman, hired at the age of seventeen, famous during her life for her stunning good looks. The two women will be analyzed in accordance to how their deaths met the requirements of the “fallen woman” trend in Victorian art/literature, which led to mass devotion/followings from onlookers who idolized their image and how it ties into gender norms at the time. Canda's grave at Green-Wood cemetery became a popular tourist destination post-mortem, rivaling the likes of Niagara Falls, and Mary Rogers' death became such a hot topic in Victorian American NYC, that it caught the attention of Edgar Allan Poe, who later penned, The Mystery of Marie Rogêt!
