Virtual reality experience.\n\nThis body of work consists of a series of prints and a related virtual reality (VR) experience that use underwater photogrammetry to explore monumental decay. The source material is the sunken ships of Mallows Bay, Maryland - the so-called Ghost Fleet. The work is made from the fragmented 3D-scans of these shipwrecks taken underwater. The resulting forms oscillate between the recognizable and the abstract, simultaneously disorienting and inviting.\n\nAbout the site\nMallows Bay, Maryland is home to the largest ship graveyard in the Western hemisphere. During World War I, the United States rushed to build extra ships, but the war ended before they were used. The Ghost Fleet ships never left harbor or saw action. Ultimately, they were salvaged for metal, burned to the waterline and sunk in Mallows Bay. Their rotting wooden skeletons made an ideal habitat for local wildlife and in 2019 the area was designated as a national marine sanctuary by the NOAA.\n\nThe area is most accessible by kayak, during the summer. I use an underwater camera rig mounted to a kayak to capture footage of the space underwater. Through photogrammetry \u2014 the process of developing 3D models from 2D images \u2014 I have created new land\/seascapes based on underwater footage of the wrecks.\nMore about the Ghost Fleet of Mallows Bay."},{"title":"COMMIT!","link":"https:\/\/mollyebendell.com\/COMMIT","pubDate":"Fri, 15 Mar 2024 17:38:01 +0000","guid":"https:\/\/mollyebendell.com\/COMMIT","description":"COMMIT! is an interactive performance in which a performer falls repeatedly, throwing herself on the ground trying to execute the most \u201ccommitted\u201d fall that she possibly can.\n\nDuring the show, she attempts to measure \u201ccommitment\u201d through audience feedback, motion capture, and biomechanical sensing. The performance juxtaposes the performer\u2019s unrelenting falling, real-time audience feedback on her \u201ccommitment,\u201d and projected visuals of the data she collects during the show. Together, these elements reveal the expectations raised and enforced by surveillance technologies and gamified interaction systems, and confront viewers with the physical and emotional toll of trying to conform.\nThis project was created by Kate Ladenheim in collaboration with myself and Timothy Ross Kelly. Unrested recognizes the 272 individuals sold by the Jesuits, reinterprets literature and visuals specific to Loyola University, and draws upon historical records to find parallels to current day trends. The exhibition employs new media technologies, extended reality artworks, and interactive displays in an aestheticized exploration of the ongoing archival research pursued by students and faculty of Loyola University.\n \nUnrested holds a mirror to an unresolved past. The exhibition overlaps material, message, and form to present how social institutions have affected several generations. A collaborative effort with Christopher Kojzar and JLS Gangwisch in strikeWare Collective, I acted as conceptual and technical lead on these two pieces among others. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Nine Graduates\nGertrude Anderson \u00ad\u2014 Nellie Anderson \u2014 Gertrude Deaver \u2014 Fannie McCabe \u2014 Mollie Taylor \u2014 Violet Thompson \u2014 William Murray \u2014 Walter Scott \u2014 Mamie Neale\nParticipants are invited to interact with this sculpture by dipping their fingers in chalk dust and gently rubbing the engraved text to expose it.\n In 1889, these nine students became the first African Americans to graduate public high school in Baltimore City. They went on to lead well-documented and often extraordinary lives, tracked here through articles in various newspapers, predominantly the Baltimore Afro-American.\n\n\n\n\n85\u00b0 - 60\u00b0Participants are invited to gently lay their hands on these two desks, heated and cooled to 85 and 60 degrees respectively. \nMany Baltimore City Public Schools still lack adequate HVAC.
