Although it seems unlikely, the National Museum in Krakow boasts one of Poland's largest collections of ancient arms. Hussar armours, swords, rapiers, antique firearms, uniforms, and above all – memorabilia belonging to numerous personages well-known from Polish and world history, which still guard various secrets – have always been an important part of the collection of the Krakow's Museum.
Beautifully published and illustrated with exquisite full-page photographs, the album is the first such publication describing this important collection. The superb photographs are accompanied by texts that use their unimpeded narrative to guide the reader through this world of old arms and uniforms, which is so unique and full of surprises.

One of the last fortresses in the Confederate hands was the Benedictine monastery of Tyniec, 10 km from Cracow, besieged by the Russian army of General A. Suvorov. Also interested in the seizure of the fortress were the Austrian troops under R. d'Alton, following the Habsburg claim to the lands on the right bank of the Vistula. In view of the fact that the supreme authority of the Confederation, the Generality, had fled abroad, Michał Walewski entered into negotiations in order to pass control of the fortress to the Polish King, and (when it proved impossible) to the Russian forces. He intended to gain favour with the King Stanisław August again and increase the chances of maintaining Polish ...

The Bar Confederation, which began in 1768 and was defeated in 1772, was followed by the partitioning of Poland. One of the last fortresses in the Confederate hands was the Benedictine monastery of Tyniec, 10 km from Krakow, besieged by the Russian army of General A. Suvorov. Also interested in the seizure of the fortress were the Austrian troops under R. d’Alton, following the Habsburg claim to the lands on the right bank of the Vistula. In view of the fact that the supreme authority of the Confederation, the Generality, had fled abroad, Michal Walewski entered into negotiations in order to pass control of the fortress to the Polish King, and (when it proved impossible) to the Russian forces. He intended to gain favour with the King Stanisław August again and increase the chances of maintaining Polish control over the Tyniec fortress. The surviving correspondence makes it possible to see how the events of the period bear testimony to the participants’ attitudes in relation to the deep crisis of the Polish statehood. The article also presents a critical discussion of how M. Walewski has been evaluated to date by historians concerned with the study of this period.

The purpose of this article is to systemize the basic terminology of decorating techniques used in the making of tsubas, or hand guards in Japanese swords. Section by section, the author explains the difference between particular techniques as well as the complicated terminology used by manufacturers and researchers. The body of the article is devoted to the openwork, relief, engraving and incrustation techniques. The author also focused on the finishing and working of the surfaces of tsubas. The historical objects presented to illustrate each technique are drawn from the tsuba collection of the National Museum in Krakow, a gift of Feliks Jasieński.
