I went into the post shop today to try and get my package as I knew it was in NZ. They didn’t have it but when I arrived it was sitting on my door step. Ya. First impression is very good. All nicely packed and all there apart from one card. The models look awesome and the level of detail is superb. I can’t believe this is Outlaws first foray into miniature models as if it is, wow, what a great effort. I got the outlaws and the enlightened (mechanical zombies) and I think I have two nice factions to get started with.

Here are some photos showing the Wicked early bird pledge plus a “few” more bits I could not resist buying. The best miniature KS yet !

Resin goodness and heaps of detail. This is VII

The cards

Rule and Fluff book

Comparison between 40k, Malfaux, WWX, Eden and Dark age. The 40K is the smallest (heroic 28mm) but on a high base and the others are remarkably similar . I think they are are 32mm scale apart from WWX which is 35mm?  The WWX does not look out of place amongst some of the best mini on the market IMHO. I just dont like the WWX base as it looks too much like a plinth .

Material used can be glued using normal plastic glue. No restex (crappy material used by some infamous companies) to be seen.

So I am very happy with my WWX KS pledge. Thanks Outlaw.

Here are the ten thunders based coated and washed. I just need to highlight.

I must admit I like them and they look very nice painted up. The lighting is poor and I tried to use my Halogen light but…

Gremlins vs Ten Thunders

I had a game of Malifaux today. It was a dust up and we played turf war. The terrain was setup and we had flanking deployment. We are still getting to grips with the new rules , and mostly the new cards for our factions. I have still actually not read all of my cards and not had time to work out any good combos but then again that is part of the fun of learning and playing M2E.

I had the following list

Ten Thunders Crew – 40 – Dustup

Mei Feng — 3 Pool
+Seismic Claws [1]
+Vapormancy [1]

Emberling [3]
Kang [9]
Rail Golem [11]
Rail Worker [5] * 3

and my mate had

Gremlins Crew – 40 – Dustup

Somer Teeth Jones — 4 Pool
+Family Tree [2]
+Show Off [1]

Skeeter X 2 [4]
Bayou Gremlin [3] * 2
Hog Whisperer [5]
Piglet [4] * 2
Slop Hauler [5]
War Pig [9]

The gremlins deployed and soon started getting there bros . They just kept on coming.

The rail golem got up a head of steam and was looking fired up to do some damage but the black joker was flipped at a crucial time during a locomotion action. He was aiming for the annoying slop hauler who just kept healing the gremlins over and over.

Mei Feng couldn’t cast a spell, namely Railwalker, to save herself and the carefully positioned rail workers were wasted. Next time I won’t be so aggressive but I knew I had to try and dent the number of activations the Gremlins had. The Rail Golem is a M&SU member and could have upgraded using bleeding edge tech. This would have given the rail workers (constructs) regeneration + 1 and a 3 inch disruption field. Oh well next time. Maybe I should read my cards before playing 😉

Kang was looking to use some hots coals but was pig charged and engaged. Kang is very hard to kill if you can keep a SS for his “can’t keep him down” action.

The Rail golem on his last legs and it succumbed to numerous small attacks of 1 wound each time. Bugger that black joker. Also the action “Vent Boiler” would have been good vs the gremlin.

A pile up ensued as the turf war started to get messy.  The war pig was on fire ( I smell bacon) and the emberling was stoking the flames. I just needed to keep the totem alive for a few turns. In the end I was out numbered and I think if we had kept playing (game finished after 3 turns and lots of flips) it was most likely going to be a draw or minor victory to the Gremlins. I have never shuffle my deck before during a turn and we just seemed to be flipping forever due to the number of gremlin attacks.

Next time I will have my Ten Thunder archers available for hire and some range fire will help.

So an enjoyable game and I do like using the Ten Thunders.

Ten Thunders Archers and Yamiziko

I got some Ten Thunders Archers and Yamaziko today from STP xmas sale :-). First thing , They did not fix together as well as I would have expected but I think that the models were some of the first plastics from Malifaux. I know the Mei Feng crew was heaps better and I think they have improved the moulding process re where to put the joins. Back to the Archers, the helmets and cloth surrounds were tricky to fit, some of the arms seemed to be a bit dis jointed. On Yamiziko the front will need some green stuff filler but should be easy to do. I like the bottle and the Yari.

Overall better than average poses and very dynamic etc but very average re assembly.

I based the models on Back to Basix resin sand bases and will undercoat asap.

M2E – First game with new rules

I had a game of M2E today and found that the new rules speed up play and were relatively easy to follow. Compared to the first game of Malifaux back in 2009 , the new rules are much improved. I still have my original rule book with all the corrections in red ink (and there were a lot of them). Note: I used to be a Wyrd Henchman.

The Changes

I like the change to pre measure. No arguments about creeping during movement as you can see what is being measured and know whats happening. The streamlined duels are good and moving the soul stones bit to the start speeds things up as you know exactly what you need to reach TN or win. Removing the CA as a stat to the attack actions and also the weapons section to the attack actions simplifies the game processes. The charge action has changed from getting 1 attack with a + damage flip to getting 2 AP 1 attacks.

Tactical actions do not require an opposed duel and Attack action do. Focus and defence are more usable now as you can choose to do a defensive stance 1 and stack it twice. Damage is the same, you can still cheat damage if its not – . I like the rewording to “Accuracy Modifier” as its make more sense that combat total modifier. Horror duels have been rewritten quite a few times and I think the current 2E is the most understandable yet. There is no concept of falling back, you just get Paralysed instead. So instead of running you just do nothing.

The use of soul stones has been refined and it doesn’t add a card to a duel total anymore, but allows a + flip or a suit to final duel total. Or the one I like is that a soul stone can add + your defence flip and – to any damage flip. The bit that was always confusing was the coloured suits in the stat line, for triggers. This has been removed and the suit added into the attack stat line. Makes it easy to see what trigger to use.

In summary , its definitely different to Version 1. Is it better? I like the “cut down” stats and abilities and it makes it easier to prepare for a game. Not as much card reading during the game speeds up play and the soulstone changes are subtle but aid the forward thinker. The upgrade cards are a great idea to add flexibility and change the way you play a model with and without the upgrade.

The bits I don’t like so much

Having to get some more models or remodel some of my old ones. Specially Joss (has only 1 ax and a pneumatic fist), Maybe I can use the guild model Ryle and convert but he is on a 40mm base.

Having to wait until all the models get new stats , I know it takes time but I am impatient 🙂

Not being able to use the Voodoo doll with LOS. I know it was good but the new range is 10 inches and you have to pay 3 to get a Voodoo doll. I guess you get to deploy the voodoo at the start of the game hence the cost.

Silurids costing 7, they are not that good. They use to cost 5 and have a leap of 9 inches 😦

Not having the new model Cojo ( The big gorilla ) as he looks like a must have for a Marcus lead crew.

The bits I really like

Having to learn the rules and what the models do, it is like a fresh start

Streamlined play, its heaps faster

The new factions , especially the Ten Thunders

The awesome art work in the rule book e.g.

I purchased the Ten Thunders Arsenal box just to see if they are usable. The rule book has all of the information and this is duplicated on the cards. The cards have a glossy presentation and are average quality but I would still sleeve them. The main issue I have is that they are hard to read! the font is tiny . I think that all you need to do if photocopy the page and make your own cards. I will try and make some cards from the book but will enlarge by 50% or so to get a readable size. Then I think I will just laminate to get a robust usable card. The other annoying issue was that the Ten Thunders cards do not include the Rail Golem as it is the Arcanist Arsenal box I think. Weird!

I was a bit hesitant to purchase this but got a 20% deal from STP and it arrived today. Wow – Fantastic service and a keen price.

The book and cards are really nice. Much better that version 1 and I am looking forward to reading and trying to have a game. I only got the ten thunders cards and will probably get some more once I get organised. See STP for these.

Here is the table of contents and some example of graphic design. The pictures are poor but hopefully you see that they have done a great job. The book doesn’t seem to have too much fluff . Its has all the rules and faction cards etc. I suppose you dont have to buy any cards and in fact it may be easier to copy from the book and make a bit larger as I find the font a bit small. I must be getting old…

I’m excited as I have heaps of Malifaux stuff and most likely can get a game.

I made up the dog “Luna” and the Arab “Sidir” and mounted McCabe on the some Taban resin bases.

Very cool but have been distracted by WWX KS and planning my army and my KS purchases.

Also listening to WWX podcast on Gamer Lounge  and thinking I like the Phonic Blaster ability. Even though I don’t like the actual model. Here are the graphics for the wave 2 Hired Hands for the enlightened. Not sure about the monowheels but the spiders are nice.

I got the Relic Hunters box set today (from pukeko games)and as always I am blown away with the quality of the new Malifaux plastics. Simply stunning!

I had to make up the Mounted McCabe and its scale and dynamic pose is great. To explain how precise these models are the bridle joins exactly on the bit and no tweaking was required. It just fits. If you haven’t brought any new Malifaux models recently, do it. You wont be disappointed. I think they are also refining the sprue making processes and appear to have more on this sprue compared to the Dark Debts sprue. You get 7 Models on this sprue.

And Mounted McCabe

Sorry re image quality.

I just have to work out what bases to use and I will make up Luna, Sidir and the Wastrels asap. I cant wait to paint this up 🙂

I’m impressed and that does not come easy for an experienced modeller like myself. The new Malifaux plastics are just fantastic. The bits are tiny yet so precise and they fit together effortlessly its is a real pleasure making them up. I can remember making up metal models and cursing and not enjoying it at all. Bring on the plastics please. It is good to see WWX using plastics and not a metal to be seen.

Here they are base on Back 2 Basix dungeon resin bases. They are very nice looking models and will paint up sweet as.
