M2E – First game with new rules

I had a game of M2E today and found that the new rules speed up play and were relatively easy to follow. Compared to the first game of Malifaux back in 2009 , the new rules are much improved. I still have my original rule book with all the corrections in red ink (and there were a lot of them). Note: I used to be a Wyrd Henchman.

The Changes

I like the change to pre measure. No arguments about creeping during movement as you can see what is being measured and know whats happening. The streamlined duels are good and moving the soul stones bit to the start speeds things up as you know exactly what you need to reach TN or win. Removing the CA as a stat to the attack actions and also the weapons section to the attack actions simplifies the game processes. The charge action has changed from getting 1 attack with a + damage flip to getting 2 AP 1 attacks.

Tactical actions do not require an opposed duel and Attack action do. Focus and defence are more usable now as you can choose to do a defensive stance 1 and stack it twice. Damage is the same, you can still cheat damage if its not – . I like the rewording to “Accuracy Modifier” as its make more sense that combat total modifier. Horror duels have been rewritten quite a few times and I think the current 2E is the most understandable yet. There is no concept of falling back, you just get Paralysed instead. So instead of running you just do nothing.

The use of soul stones has been refined and it doesn’t add a card to a duel total anymore, but allows a + flip or a suit to final duel total. Or the one I like is that a soul stone can add + your defence flip and – to any damage flip. The bit that was always confusing was the coloured suits in the stat line, for triggers. This has been removed and the suit added into the attack stat line. Makes it easy to see what trigger to use.

In summary , its definitely different to Version 1. Is it better? I like the “cut down” stats and abilities and it makes it easier to prepare for a game. Not as much card reading during the game speeds up play and the soulstone changes are subtle but aid the forward thinker. The upgrade cards are a great idea to add flexibility and change the way you play a model with and without the upgrade.

The bits I don’t like so much

Having to get some more models or remodel some of my old ones. Specially Joss (has only 1 ax and a pneumatic fist), Maybe I can use the guild model Ryle and convert but he is on a 40mm base.

Having to wait until all the models get new stats , I know it takes time but I am impatient 🙂

Not being able to use the Voodoo doll with LOS. I know it was good but the new range is 10 inches and you have to pay 3 to get a Voodoo doll. I guess you get to deploy the voodoo at the start of the game hence the cost.

Silurids costing 7, they are not that good. They use to cost 5 and have a leap of 9 inches 😦

Not having the new model Cojo ( The big gorilla ) as he looks like a must have for a Marcus lead crew.

The bits I really like

Having to learn the rules and what the models do, it is like a fresh start

Streamlined play, its heaps faster

The new factions , especially the Ten Thunders

The awesome art work in the rule book e.g.

I got the Relic Hunters box set today (from pukeko games)and as always I am blown away with the quality of the new Malifaux plastics. Simply stunning!

I had to make up the Mounted McCabe and its scale and dynamic pose is great. To explain how precise these models are the bridle joins exactly on the bit and no tweaking was required. It just fits. If you haven’t brought any new Malifaux models recently, do it. You wont be disappointed. I think they are also refining the sprue making processes and appear to have more on this sprue compared to the Dark Debts sprue. You get 7 Models on this sprue.

And Mounted McCabe

Sorry re image quality.

I just have to work out what bases to use and I will make up Luna, Sidir and the Wastrels asap. I cant wait to paint this up 🙂

Depleted get assembled and based

I’m impressed and that does not come easy for an experienced modeller like myself. The new Malifaux plastics are just fantastic. The bits are tiny yet so precise and they fit together effortlessly its is a real pleasure making them up. I can remember making up metal models and cursing and not enjoying it at all. Bring on the plastics please. It is good to see WWX using plastics and not a metal to be seen.

Here they are base on Back 2 Basix dungeon resin bases. They are very nice looking models and will paint up sweet as.

My depleted arrived today so it will allow me to have a complete Jakob Lynch list. Here is the sprue. Great quality and I am looking forward to assembling.

and back

I also picked up some neverborn models I was after as well, Tuco and Iggy.

I have a lot of Wild West type terrain that I use for Malifaux. Its time to make a custom worldworksGame board using the WWG Dreadfall Streets of Blood sheets. I have printed some off and will have ago at glueing some to my board asap. It a very subtle effect but I like the wooden side walks, street etc (not shown below) . Also comes with some cool wagons etc. I want some areas of wilderness with Cacti and rocks etc Also maybe some train tracks and some mines?

I have a dungeon type board and matching terrain and I like it a lot. Especially for Malifaux as you don’t have dice. Hmmm, bouncing dice may be any issue but I think D10’s are a little more forgiving the D6’s 😉

Right lets get cutting and planning. Here are some placed to see what they will look like. I think it will look sweet !

What you do to disguise the joins after glueing onto board is get a big brush and dab on a matching colour , it  works a treat. I will probably have to get a resene test pot to get an exact match.

Here are some old shots of my western inspired building with a bit of steampunk re pipes etc

Rail crew painted

Here is the rail crew painted and ready for a game. I just have to wash the “skin” on Rail Golem but waiting on some washes to arrive. It was washed with the Vallejo wash but I don’t like the effect. I used Reaper MSP for this project. Based on resin bases from Back-2-Basix.

Kirai vs Zoraida scrap notes

Posted: 31 January 2013 in Malifaux

I had a 30 SS game today, first time I have had a game on a thursday morning. Terrain was average with enough blocking terrain but as we both had CC armies it didn’t really matter. The Strategy was a shared “Line in the Sand” which is always very tactical. Random schemes for me were Grudge (on Datsue-Bie) and body guard and opponent got frame for murder and ? It was a diagonal deployment and we were off. I mis counted and only had 5 SS instead of 7. I could have dropped stitched together and taken something else worth seven? Maybe Tuco would have been fun.

Zoraida, the Hag –5 Pool
Collodi [8ss]
Marionette [2ss] * 3
Stitched Together [5ss]
Weaver Widow [9ss]

Ressurectionists Crew – 30 – Scrap

Kirai Ankoku — 5 Pool
Lost Love [2ss]
Datsue-Ba [7ss]
Gaki [3ss] * 3
Seishin [2ss] * 5

Turn one: I won initiative and moved up Collodi and his toys as fast as I could towards the objective in the middle of the board. My Opponent was worried I would link voodoo to Datsue-Ba but I summoned my first and as it turned out, the match winning Wicked doll. My Opponent summoned a Ikiryo using dont blink and Collodi was in CC on turn one! Yikes I got a bit close, in fact I forgot how quick the spirits are. The cc ensued but my Marionette took the attack and defended and then attacked causing some wounds. The Gaki were called by the Ikiryo and I could see it getting messy. In the mean time I got some scrap with the Widow and move the Stitched toward another objective counter.
Turn two: Not sure who got initiative but Collodi had to master his dolls and cause some damage. The wicked doll charged into the wounded Ikiryo and killed it and summoned a wicked doll with murderous. The dolls went crazy (+1)fast and caused a lot of damage on the three gaki. Wow the dolls are very good vs spirits as its not how much damage they cause but the number of attacks. Zoraida voodoo dolled a gaki as well and ended up killing one. Kirai summoned some more stuff and the Datsue-Ba was still sulking worried about the voodoo doll. A marionette was chopped down but a scrap token was generated. The stitched together interacted with an objective.
Turn three: Collodi summoned a marionette and started attacking and moving again. Kirai came around the corner and summoned a Gaki but was low on wounds. Some healing flips helped a little bit. The Widow after interacting with an objective turn two summoned a wicked doll. The game was turning Zoraidas way and Kirai was helpless as the spirits couldn’t penetrate the defences of the dolls. One of the gaki charged another gaki as zoraida was voodoo crazy. She then took off and flew toward another objective to finish off the game.
Turn four: Widow killed a gaki who was threatening a counter with the help of a wicked doll a gaki and would have summoned another wicked doll if I had any more.

Game was called early. The Neverborn were on top , this time. Some lucky cards , red jokers and My Opponent getting a few black jokers. Overall, the dolls are fun to use and can bring down models if they are lucky and attack together.

Here is a quick word about asembling the Rail Crew.

The Rail Crew were a pleasure to assemble. Very easy to do with only a few moments of wondering were a piece went. A picture of the backs of the models would help, so instead of a oversized picture of the models from the front on the box they could have an actual size picture showing front and the back. I did cut of a tab for Kangs shovel hand but it was easily stuck back on. Very little time required to remove a few mold lines and tidy up some rough bits from cutting piece from sprue.  Great quality plastic and the pieces fit perfectly. Nice pose on Mei Feng but not sure if I will keep her on top of the wooden fence? she came with. Might just base her straight on the ground as her poses is very dynamic anyway. To finish assembly I will just add a little bit of GS to the Emberling so you can’t see the join between base bit and body as this will show when painting.

So overall very happy so far with the Rail Crew.

Malifaux – Weaver Widow

I have aways liked this model and I have finally got one and painted it. It really does invoke the neverborn theme of monsters under the bed. Here she  is. (I’ve only just noticed the base needs a touch up, and the face. Its amazing what you see after posting a photo!!!)

One possible 30 SS crew could be

Zoraida, the Hag — 5 Pool

Collodi [8ss]

Marionette [2ss]
Marionette [2ss]

Marionette [2ss]

Marionette [2ss]
Stitched Together [5ss]
Weaver Widow [9ss]

The Widow is terrifying 13 and her melee attack ignores armour. If she can grab enough corpse or scrap then a Teddy can be summoned. Also she can summon wicked dolls. So combined with Zoraida’s create Voodoo Doll (can summon a wicked doll instead of a voodoo) I can see lots, lots of wicked dolls in play. Hmmm I might have to get some more as I only have three.
