Felt like a quiet day so I painted my Coven models that I got from the KS. Very nice models apart from the Powerhouse who I just didn’t like. So I added some claws and a head piece . Still looks a bit static but its better. I also made up some the temporary minions for the coven. After the game the other day the leaders seem to use lots of minions as they seem integral to the tactics of the leaders I have.

Pulp City cards

Pulp city dot com has started updating the web site to have the new cards. See here for list of Heroes and Villains. Here is an example of an updatedΒ card and what itΒ means

Twilight level 1 infiltrator with mystery alignment, generates 2 AP each turn and no minion points. Mounted on a 30mm base and is from the Coven and The Way faction

AP limit of 3 , 4 Health points , Movement type of blink with stealth , Strength 3 , Defense 4 , Energy 4, Agility 5 and a trump cos its red , mind 3 and spirit 3 . Actions Shadow Fangs, Silencer Gun and Vanish. With Infiltrator and shadow zone powers.

So Shadow Fangs cost 2 AP , it is a Close Combat Action using Agility vs Defense. So roll x D6s and add on Agility to the high value e.g. Rolled a 5 + agility of 5 = 10 vs defender defense say of rolled a 3 + defense of 2 = 5. 10 beats 5 and causes FX damage of 2. Also any 5 or 6’s cause Extra Effects or EFX of extra target 2 (apply damage of FX to a target within 2 inches) and damage 1 to original target. Seems to be a nice way of writing down what happens but still need to learn the syntax of the statement.

One thing I have thought about is the movement range and moving multiple times. This is explained under the Activation heading and it states – Use an exclusive action or a movement action AND use an additional movement action AND/OR use an additional combination action (denoted by an * on the exclusive actions) . Each time you move you get Fatigued and you can only have 2 Fatigues so Twilight can move twice. So for twilight that is 10 inches. Cool.

Here is bit from book just explain it some more

Still lots to do but almost ready for a game or two. They are a bit brighter than photo suggests but I do tend to be quite a dark painter anyway. Very nice to paint and the variety is brilliant. Each model is unique and they require different techniques.

The big powerhouse, Cro Mag is quite an impressive model. Β Powerhouses get the EFX on 4+ compared to 5+ for trump stats and 6+ for normal stats. I think Cro Mag has stats are 8 Str 5 Def 1 Energy 3 Agility 1 Mind and 3 Spirit. The CCM action does damage 3 and EFX of damage 1 and knockback 4, Stun. Cool. He also has enchanted headgear that make him immune to mind control. So my advice is to keep out of his way

Pulp City models based

Well some of them are based, enough to have a starter game with my mate. I based up the Coven on some resin bases from Taban and made up a 50mm using a 40mm plus the rim from a 50mm. I based the Villains on some resin secret model bases. They are ok but not as nice as the Taban bases. Still need to base up the Grimms and I think I need to get some more bases. I have lots of them.

So overall the Coven are very nice but the LOA powerhouse I feel is missing something. Sort of reminds of a bad FX from an old Dr Who episode. I think I will get creative and add a few of my own conversion bits and pieces to him. His picture on the card is quite different to the actual model. I don’t think I will change any of the other models apart from mounting twilight without the little statue she came with.Β

The Villains are very nice and I love all of the variety. It will be a lot of fun painting these up, especially the powerhouse Cro Mag. Β I also really like the “man of gold” and the little mutant Xenobi.

Here is the Soul Golem I got by mistake instead of getting Tiny, the Grimm Powerhouse. I will paint him up for something to do as it is a beautiful model and use him as Tiny.

So ready to base coat for my first game.

M2E – First game with new rules

I had a game of M2E today and found that the new rules speed up play and were relatively easy to follow. Compared to the first game of Malifaux back in 2009 , the new rules are much improved. I still have my original rule book with all the corrections in red ink (and there were a lot of them). Note: I used to be a Wyrd Henchman.

The Changes

I like the change to pre measure. No arguments about creeping during movement as you can see what is being measured and know whats happening. The streamlined duels are good and moving the soul stones bit to the start speeds things up as you know exactly what you need to reach TN or win. Removing the CA as a stat to the attack actions and also the weapons section to the attack actions simplifies the game processes. The charge action has changed from getting 1 attack with a + damage flip to getting 2 AP 1 attacks.

Tactical actions do not require an opposed duel and Attack action do. Focus and defence are more usable now as you can choose to do a defensive stance 1 and stack it twice. Damage is the same, you can still cheat damage if its not – . I like the rewording to “Accuracy Modifier” as its make more sense that combat total modifier. Horror duels have been rewritten quite a few times and I think the current 2E is the most understandable yet. There is no concept of falling back, you just get Paralysed instead. So instead of running you just do nothing.

The use of soul stones has been refined and it doesn’t add a card to a duel total anymore, but allows a + flip or a suit to final duel total. Or the one I like is that a soul stone can add + your defence flip and – to any damage flip. The bit that was always confusing was the coloured suits in the stat line, for triggers. This has been removed and the suit added into the attack stat line. Makes it easy to see what trigger to use.

In summary , its definitely different to Version 1. Is it better? I like the “cut down” stats and abilities and it makes it easier to prepare for a game. Not as much card reading during the game speeds up play and the soulstone changes are subtle but aid the forward thinker. The upgrade cards are a great idea to add flexibility and change the way you play a model with and without the upgrade.

The bits I don’t like so much

Having to get some more models or remodel some of my old ones. Specially Joss (has only 1 ax and a pneumatic fist), Maybe I can use the guild model Ryle and convert but he is on a 40mm base.

Having to wait until all the models get new stats , I know it takes time but I am impatient πŸ™‚

Not being able to use the Voodoo doll with LOS. I know it was good but the new range is 10 inches and you have to pay 3 to get a Voodoo doll. I guess you get to deploy the voodoo at the start of the game hence the cost.

Silurids costing 7, they are not that good. They use to cost 5 and have a leap of 9 inches 😦

Not having the new model Cojo ( The big gorilla ) as he looks like a must have for a Marcus lead crew.

The bits I really like

Having to learn the rules and what the models do, it is like a fresh start

Streamlined play, its heaps faster

The new factions , especially the Ten Thunders

The awesome art work in the rule book e.g.

McCabe and his crew

I got the Relic Hunters box set today (from pukeko games)and as always I am blown away with the quality of the new Malifaux plastics. Simply stunning!

I had to make up the Mounted McCabe and its scale and dynamic pose is great. To explain how precise these models are the bridle joins exactly on the bit and no tweaking was required. It just fits. If you haven’t brought any new Malifaux models recently, do it. You wont be disappointed. I think they are also refining the sprue making processes and appear to have more on this sprue compared to the Dark Debts sprue. You get 7 Models on this sprue.

And Mounted McCabe

Sorry re image quality.

I just have to work out what bases to use and I will make up Luna, Sidir and the Wastrels asap. I cant wait to paint this up πŸ™‚

Depleted get assembled and based

I’m impressed and that does not come easy for an experienced modeller like myself. The new Malifaux plastics are just fantastic. The bits are tiny yet so precise and they fit together effortlessly its is a real pleasure making them up. I can remember making up metal models and cursing and not enjoying it at all. Bring on the plastics please. It is good to see WWX using plastics and not a metal to be seen.

Here they are base on Back 2 Basix dungeon resin bases. They are very nice looking models and will paint up sweet as.

My depleted arrived today so it will allow me to have a complete Jakob Lynch list. Here is the sprue. Great quality and I am looking forward to assembling.

and back

I also picked up some neverborn models I was after as well, Tuco and Iggy.

Washes and things

I got some citadel washes and glazes for about 50% off the NZ recommended price (cost me $3.60) and I also brought reaper empty bottle to transfer them to because I prefer the dropper style and they fit into my painting organiser. Which is BTW filling up and I might have to get another one.

The label also came off so I stuck that onto new dropper bottles . Sweet. Any body want some empty citadel paint pots πŸ˜‰

I have a lot of Wild West type terrain that I use for Malifaux. Its time to make a custom worldworksGame board using the WWG Dreadfall Streets of Blood sheets. I have printed some off and will have ago at glueing some to my board asap. It a very subtle effect but I like the wooden side walks, street etc (not shown below) . Also comes with some cool wagons etc. I want some areas of wilderness with Cacti and rocks etc Also maybe some train tracks and some mines?

I have a dungeon type board and matching terrain and I like it a lot. Especially for Malifaux as you don’t have dice. Hmmm, bouncing dice may be any issue but I think D10’s are a little more forgiving the D6’s πŸ˜‰

Right lets get cutting and planning. Here are some placed to see what they will look like. I think it will look sweet !

What you do to disguise the joins after glueing onto board is get a big brush and dab on a matching colour , it Β works a treat. I will probably have to get a resene test pot to get an exact match.

Here are some old shots of my western inspired building with a bit of steampunk re pipes etc
