I took a Emperors Children army to Liber Animis III 2006 and had a great time. I think I won the Best Sportsman prize and finished top ten overall. So i know and have used sonic weapons extensively in my 40k armies. The 2012 Chaos Codex hasn’t really changed anything re the range and strength but the weapon in now a Salvo 2/3 and Ignores cover. They are cheaper at 3 points each by 2 points. I think the ignores cover change is a biggie. I can see units of noise marines being able to negate lots of effects that provide cover and slight reduction in cost of a noise marine combined with cheaper weapons make a sonic weapon squad a playable unit.
One of the major issue re the modelling of sonic weapons is that they model always seem to tip over. I sold all of my metal sonic blasters and blastmasters (wasn’t as tippy) and have been making up some plastic conversions using plastic tubing and the compulsory GS.
Here is my take on a sonic blaster.
