Mliteracy is an initiative developed by Derek Moore and the Goethe-Institut for public libraries. The intention of the project is to improve the public librarians capacity to access and read open materials, available in a digital format, on their own mobile phones.

Many phone users have begun to connect to reading and information resources with mobile devices. But data costs, competing operating systems, fluency with apps and a host of other factors prevent mobile phone users from learning how to make full use of their own devices to access reading materials.

Mliteracy is also intended for owners of cell phones. Who see their own mobile devices as the chance to access opportunity. Whether it be reading, opportunity or information sources. Libraries, that are equipped with Wi-fi, can address the barriers that prevent access to text. Librarians who participate in mliteracy. Can become can become confident with showing patrons how to use their mobile devices and free Wi-Fi in (and outside) a library to access free reading materials. Perhaps build their own libraries “in their pockets”. Pocket libraries filled with e-books, reading apps, story writing websites, literacy materials, audiobooks etc. that await the eager reader.

Librarians are invited to join the workshop. And learn how they might take full advantage of mobile devices and online reading materials. Join us in for a gentle exploration of this emerging space.
