Being the only child there isn’t much to do other than watch movies and pack your bags to explore an exotic undisclosed location. Amidst confusion to pick between both, a fusion seemed to be a brilliant idea for my project topic.
“ Main udna chahta hun, daudna chahta hun, girna bhi chahta hun. Bas, rukna nahi chahta.”
Born into a family of mixed breeds (I say so because my ancestry comprises almost entire South India), it was but natural that I took to Bollywood. Movies have been the driving force behind my existence as it is a soothing element to help escape reality and enter a dimension of pure bliss. Travel for others might be breaking the mould of their daily routine but for me it is a sort of intoxication that makes me go crazy with pleasure. Which is why combining all the major elements of my life, I decided to take up ‘An Exploration of Bollywood’s Travel Genre’ as my project topic. Through this project I have tried to explore the working of a new genre and how to draw features from existing movies to create a category of its own.

Hindi cinema was the forerunner in portraying ‘the ideal, perfect, angry young man’ which was added pressure on men. With time the definition of masculinity evolved and became more welcoming. Men come in various forms and their personalities differ. Millennial Hindi cinema is accepting these forms of masculinity and dabbling with them. This dissertation will analyze two recent films; Kabir Singh and Dream Girl. Both showcasing varied masculinities yet normalizing a man emoting and being true to himself. The dissertation will dissect the film from a hegemonic masculinity angle; analyze the characters based on Jungian archetypes and their version of cultural liberalism.
