The teachers achieve these goals by introducing and drilling the elements of grammar, by demonstrating and discussing syntactical arrangements, by defining and illustrating literary devices and distinctions of style, by investigating the history and the political and literary figures pertinent to the texts studied, and by discussing the political structure, the institutions, and the conflicts and compromises of the Roman Republic and Early Empire. Students begin the year with a thorough review of the material covered the previous year, proceed then into new material, and are reading various Latin writers by the sixth grading period, at the latest.
