Furlough Day Eleventy One

Still not the prettiest.... oh, sorry, wrong diary!

Still furloughed! Now that the debt ceiling thing is winding down, the hope is that they'll get our stuff sorted out. So, maybe by Thursday or Friday? Of course, I am heading up to NYC this weekend, so I won't be in those days if we do go back! (We're going to see the Potter exhibit and I need cuddle time with my goddaughter).

ETA: OR NOT... Congress has adjourned for its August recess. Looks like I might be furloughed for all of August. Fuck.

Spent some time at the pool today. I figured I might as well enjoy the time off now that I don't have to schlepp the kid back and forth to camp.

Then I had to go do the tech support thing for my mother. She claimed her internet wasn't working, but it was fine while I was there (always the way, isn't it?). But I installed some updates and showed her how to use the iTunes store. And had to explain AGAIN, how internet comes to her house and what an ISP is vs. a browser vs. a website.

In media news, am making good progess of Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, book 2) and I managed to snag Pottermore accounts for both me and my son. I am FlameCharm46 over there, and am looking forward to the Sorting Test. I am hoping the boy and I get different houses so we can share the info.

Computer Says No

And away we go!

My Windows 7 upgrade CD has arrived and is currently inside the Vista laptop, doing it's thing.

*crosses fingers and toes*

See you on the other side!

Three hours later: Aaaand, we're done! And it all works! Even iTunes! *twirls*

Is Dreamwidth down or is it just me? I keep getting a Network Server error.

ETA: It appears to be either a result of Dreamwidth's update this morning or my work ISP's internet filter as I can no longer access JournalFen (possible Adult Content) nor random places like TMZ.com or YouTube (I get a warning notice that I should only continue if I have a legitimate business reason - and we do have a YT channel). Or a combination of these things. ARGH. Life will really suck if LiveJournal gets blocked.

It snowed yesterday/last night! About 4 inches judging by the deck in my back garden. But none stuck to the roads. Also, it's sunny and above freezing today, so it will all be gone by the time I get home.

I battled the laptop last night. It's been down since Saturday morning but I've been in denial. Basically, I had to re-install Windows XP. AGAIN! Yes, three strikes and you are out. I'm leaving it running long enough to copy all of my files (each time, I learn to save less and less on there) and am going to have to break down and get a new one, methinks. Those things only have about a two year life expectancy anyway.

I am woefully behind on Christmas shopping and still haven't settled on a picture for the Holiday cards.

The Saturday meetup with the hp_dcmetro t00bs was loads of fun! We giggled, clapped, hooted and hollered at inappropriate moments both during the film and after! Was sad I had to leave early, especially because the concert we went to was disappointing.

Finally, if you are in the Washington, DC area on December 17...join us here!

We have survived the birthday party and the ensuing cleanup. Why are these things so exhausting?

I am deeply distressed but hardly surprised that Bush is now nominating Roberts for Chief Justice. I just really am at a loss for words with him anymore.

In other news, my laptop is again the bane of my existence. The AC adapter had been acting up so I ordered a new one, but now I think that it is the prong inside the computer that is loose so it keeps switching from AC power to battery power. And I need a new battery as the current one is not holding the charge for very long. So where it should last for about three hours on battery power, I'm lucky to get forty minutes.

I tried taking it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy today but they couldn't help onsite. So now I have to find a local repair shop or send it out somewhere. Luckily, I can share my husband's and son's computers for short periods of time, but it's hard to spend hours on here right now. Which is good, I suppose, because foldingstar is on holiday this week and I am having to find things to occupy myself. It is up to all of you to entertain me! When I can manage to get the laptop sorted, that is.
