Benefits of membership

The Institute is the Royal Chartered membership organisation for science and technology in the North. Founded as the world’s oldest mining and engineering institute, today the Institute provides an opportunity to be part of a diverse community of science and technology professionals across the natural, physical and materials sciences. Becoming a member offers many professional and social benefits including:

  • Invitations to our guest lecture series and CPD events,
  • Our monthly newsletter with information about contemporary science, technology and engineering issues as well as industrial heritage events,
  • Invitation to the annual Institute dinner in partnership with the alumni of the Newcastle University Mining Society,
  • Discounts on Institute led fieldtrips, publications and events,
  • The opportunity to serve on our committees to shape the future of the Institute and of science and technology in the North East,
  • Invitation to the Institute’s annual sporting events

In addition, Fellows and Members are entitled to use the postnominal FNEIMME and MNEIMME respectively.

Membership categories

Membership is open to those who are involved in the core ‘disciplines’ of the Institute (including mining, engineering, and other science and technology backgrounds). Those with relevant qualifications or experience can apply for Fellow, Member and Associate as outlined below. Student and Affiliate memberships are available to a wider public including those who specialise in industrial heritage.

Fellow (FNEIMME) Annual Subscription £45

Fellows must either be professionally qualified or have at least at least five years of relevant experience practicing in one of the Institutes’ core disciplines. A Fellow may also be elected on the basis of their attainments in enginneering, science and technology.

Member (MNEIMME) Annual Subscription £45

Membership is open to any person suitably educated and/or trained in an area related to the Objects of the Institute (geology, engineering, physics, chemistry, maths, ect.) and who are working towards the qualifications and experience needed to become a Fellow of the Institute.

Associate Member Annual Subscription £40

Associate Membership is open to those suitably educated and/or trained in an area related to
the Objects of the Institute (geology, engineering, physics, chemistry, maths, ect.) but who do not yet have the experience or qualifications needed to become a Member of the Institute.

Students Annual Subscription £10

Any person under 25 who is in full or part-time education and is studying a relevant subject (geology, engineering, physics, chemistry, maths, etc.), including those completing apprenticeships, may join as a student member. We also welcome those interested in the industrial and social heritage of the North.

Affiliate Annual Subscription £40

Associate membership is open to any person who desires to support the Institute but who does not hold appropriate qualifications or experience for other membership categories. We also welcome those interested in the industrial and social heritage of the North.
