This is a school assignment that I chose to share with the world. Following is the assignment and the results.
In order to supply your body with the needed amount of oxygen, your heart rate either increases or decreases. Your heart is constantly adjusting itself without you knowing it. In this activity, you will record and chart your heart rate during a variety of activities. You will need a stopwatch or a clock with a second hand to gauge your pulse.
Heart Rate (Beats/ Minute)
Step 1: Lie down in a comfortable position for 3-5 minutes. After the time has elapsed, count the number of times your heart beats in 6 seconds. Multiply times ten to get the number of beats per minute. To find your pulse, place your index and middle fingers under your jawline on either side of your larynx. Do not use your thumb. Record your heart rate.
Step 2: Sit in a chair for 3-4 minutes, then count the number of times your heart beats in 6 seconds. Multiply times ten to get the number of beats per minute. Record your heart rate.
Step 3: Stand for 3-4 minutes, then count the number of times your heart beats in 6 seconds. Multiply times ten to get the number of beats per minute. Record your heart rate.
Step 4: Run in place for 60 seconds, then count the number of times your heart beats in 6 seconds. Multiply times ten to get the number of beats per minute. Record your heart rate.
Step 5: Do jumping jacks in place for 60 seconds, then count the number of times your heart beats in 6 seconds. Multiply times ten to get the number of beats per minute. Record your heart rate.
Step 6: Sit in a chair for 60 seconds, then count the number of times your heart beats in 6 seconds. Multiply times ten to get the number of beats per minute. Record your heart rate.
Step 7: Lie down for 60 seconds, then count the number of times your heart beats in 6 seconds. Multiply times ten to get the number of beats per minute. Record your heart rate.
Answer the following questions.
1) According to your data, what kind of activities increased your heart rate?
2) According to what you have learned about the circulatory and respiratory systems, explain how and why your heart changed its rate.
Forms of resting lowered my heart rate, but did mot raise them. Forms of aerobic exercise (such as running or jumping jacks) raise my heart rate.
My control (which was my heart rate before completing the exercise listed) was 96bpm.
After laying down for several minutes, my heart rate dropped to 60bpm.
Sitting caused by heart rate to increase to 66bpm.
I then ran for 3 minutes which brought my heart rate to 216.
Doing a minute of jumping jacks brought my heart rate to 180bpm (which I think was partially human error).
After resting for a minute, my heart hate was then 120bpm.
I then rested for a minute, and was then unable to detect my own heart rate. (Again, I believe this was human error).
A bit more about this experiment, before starting it, I was sitting at a desk doing schoolwork at my computer. I also measured my heart rate using my second and third fingers on my heart rate to check for my pulse in my vein on the left side of my neck. When I was unable to find it their on the last part of the test, I also tried using the same fingers on the left hand on the right side of my neck, as well as using the same fingers on my right hand to check for the pulse below the palm of my left hand.
Timing to check my pulse was done my looking at my digital watch which was positioned loosely on my left arm. Timing for each test performed by watching the time on my watch or looking at a digital clock, or by using a digital timer on a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultua.
While this test was not done in the most scientific way possible, this was an academic activity and not one that I understood to be of any scientific purpose in its carrying out; this does not mean that this same experiment is not done for scientific purpose.
Side note: This activity got other members of my family to the same exercises, although I did not perform the same experiment on them. They choose to exsersice of their own free will, although they did not check their pulse, nor did I ask them to do so.
