Work's been a bit hellish this week, so I got the art calendar posted to AO3 in time for Romancing McShep, and forgot to do a final post here. Click for full size pic.

It was an interesting project, but not one I'll repeat. I'm too impatient and I work on an artwork obsessively until it's done, so rationing out the task to a small bit each day just frustrates me. But, fun to have tried it.

Aaand another update on the art calendar. I'm spreading them out a bit as I'm off to Melbourne for a few days from tomorrow. Three days of meetings, joy. Have to get a dawn flight and what with how late I always get to bed, there's no point trying to sleep at all, really. Maybe on the plane.



I posted a not very SFW naked cuddling piece of art as another thing for Romancing McShep, A Room With A View. The summary's not massively romantic I guess, but there's a lot of tenderness in their poses, and given a choice between sappiness and humor, trust me to go with humor.

I was looking for trinityofone's SGA fics on the Wayback Machine as I'm sure I used to have that link bookmarked but couldn't locate it. But the only snapshot on Wayback that functions at all has hardly any working links when you click through. Does anyone out there have a better URL for all the rest of Trin's fics that aren't on AO3? Neither of the fic-finding comms on LJ really work for asking about all of an author's work. It's not really a genre. 

 All caught up - just one part a day from tomorrow. I decided the night sky needed more stars so that meant a small adjustment, and I'm just crossing my fingers that I can get their faces to work out okay.

Also, I realized that this can be my contribution to Romancing McShep once it's done, as that festival runs from 14th-28th Feb, so that makes February a bit more doable challenge-wise. Phew. 

I'm jumping on this bandwagon as well - it's fun! I'm playing catch up so it'll be 4 days of 2 squares filled in per day, then 1 a day.
darthneko's invented a kind of advent calendar for doing art - small parts of an overall work that you complete each day across a month until it's done. Here's the post about it - there are 2 templates that can be used in a link in the comments.
sholio's doing one as well - over here, and here. goss is doing one too, and doubtless others are giving it a go.

I like how different they all are. Me being me, mine's in colour and done digitally, not with traditional media. It'll also end up G-rated slashy (I hope!). This one'll be SGA - if I do more I'll do a different fandom each time.
A bit scary to see if I can link up the shading and get the overall drawing to look vaguely okay, especially when I get to the hard part - the people! And no, I haven't already drawn it all out - seat of the pants, I'm afraid.

In other news, I finished my Apocalypse Kree apocafic, yay! (concludes my series 'The Rapture').

Now only Romancing McShep, Pic-for-1000, SGA-Reversebang, the Ante-Up Losers exchange and the Captain America ReverseBigBang to go before June. How did that happen? *hides*

I'm bad at finishing series, or rather, I'm too ready to promise that something's the start of a series, and then not deliver on the sequels. They're not WIPs as the stories are complete in themselves, but they feel like the start of a 'verse or a bigger story. Then I get distracted by challenges, and work, and the new shiny, and . . . yeah. Before you know it a few years have passed and how in hell did that happen?

So for Apocalypse Kree this year (deadline's the end of January), I'm determined to finish my John/Ronon Rapture series that started with After the Harvest. When I first started it I was planning to have the series become John/Ronon/Rodney after Rodney joined them, but that'd take vastly more words and plot, so I think I'll have it just as John/Ronon and keep Rodney as their buddy. I do have the final part outlined, but I'm at that stage where you look at the outline and it feels like a hell of a lot of work to get the characters from (in this case) Vegas to Colorado. 

Especially when you get whammied by another, shinier plot bunny! Well, it's only shinier because it's newer, but OMG, I'm having such fun with the outline. It'll be for Romancing McShep so it has to wait until I get the apocafic done, but I really really want to play with it now (pouts). I have some medical background and I've wanted to do a medical AU for a while, to use some of that stuff, but it's always felt a bit OOC for Sheppard, although I've read some great short AUs with him and Rodney as ER-type doctors. Then there's Rodney's attitude to "voodoo" medicine. But I suddenly thought of the perfect solution - a Doc Martin AU!!  (Do USA-folks know the UK TV series Doc Martin?) So Rodney's the irascible genius ex-surgeon with no bedside manner at all who develops a blood phobia and is forced to relocate as a family doctor to a small coastal town, where he meets John (probably a local police officer I think, but definitely not the neurotic one from Doc Martin who fretted about his tiny penis!). And all the usual suspects transposed into (non-sci-fi) AU roles. I think I'd set in in in coastal Maine, as a vague correlation to Cornwall - a made-up town very like Boothbay Harbor.  Rodney's going to be ideal as the Aspergery Doc Mac, antagonizing everyone and diagnosing the hell out of them with House-like accuracy. BUT NO. I MUST BE STRONG AND SET IT ASIDE FOR NOW.  Damn. 

So as usual I fail at regular journaling; no surprises there! The usual combination of stuff - work was hellishly busy for a while (ha, I keep writing busty, which, no), with some big deadlines, thankfully past now so a brief breathing spell in which to finish off my due South_c6d Big Bang project, and start doing two complementary artworks I've claimed.

General Stuff
I am OK! Possum is OK! I hope you're all doing OK too, and are less busy than me. I'm getting a new front door put in, as the old one's semi-rotted. 1950s weatherboard house in the bush, what can you do? I've started to do long-put-off chores like sorting out household fix-its, but am still behind the eight-ball in terms of my own exercise regime, sigh. Still trying, anyway, and still eating low-carb so that's good for me. 

Well I finished my Jack/Daniel story for riverfox , called Happy Birthday to Us - cheerful porn, as advertised. I got a great story from svana_vrika - Out And Away From Under, about revelations on an alien world, hurt/comfort, romance and first times.

And I'm finally writing my John/Ronon fic for the Satedan Grabass thing-a-thon. Should be done in a couple of days. Problem with a small fandom, which SGA kind of is these days in terms of activity if not readers, is finding a beta. I didn't bother with the fic above because cheerful porn, and also it was short. This one won't be long, but it's likely to be 5000-6000, and I can wing it, but betas always improve things and catch bits that don't work and occasional non-US Englishisms.

So, anyone up for beta-reading a John/Ronon story? Romance and NC-17 rated towards the end, no AO3 warnings apply. Posting is the 24th I'm afraid. Very much appreciated if anyone's able to help!

In other news, I've discovered The Gilmore Girls and am wallowing in cheesy denial of reality. Also an excellent fic rec: I'm Not Ifrit of the Dark, by signe (oxoniensis), a GG and Supernatural crossover on a Buffy fusion base! In which Rory is a slayer and weird things are going on at Chilton. Great stuff.</user></user></user>

Went to a class reunion yesterday - happened to be in my home city - which was interesting. Reminded me how much I like a few close friends in the class, and that I should see more of them, and how profoundly I don't care about all the rest. People were . . . oddly affectionate towards me. A lot of virtual strangers (my shonky memory) beamed at me or squeezed my shoulder as they went past. I suspect I was a 'character', back in the day. I was certainly the only one wearing bright red (yesterday, but probably back then as well), in a sea of boring blue-beige-grey and way too much plaid. On the very definitely plus side, the band was great (the Hipstamatics, a large Auckland cover band who do jazz, Motown and disco - they had a sound tech who wandered around the room doing wireless audio-mixing on his ipad - first time I've seen that!) so I had a good dance, which was notable because a) I danced for some time without any back pain (thank you keto-diet and abs exercises) and b) I earned a slice of lime-coconut cheesecake as dessert once I got home. Good times!

Blackglass (xdiorix) podficced my multi-crossover story "Five Times the Wraith Invaded Earth But Were Thwarted" - the podfic is here, yay! It was for the sound effects square of a podfic bingo and the Wraith voices in it are excellent.

The Ante-up Losers exchange went live. I got Whatever Happens from chibifukurou (a lovely post-movie fic with Jolene being her usual awesome self) and I wrote Holding On, Holding Out for tommygirl (The Losers/Stargate Atlantis/Stargate SG1). Beaming technology: such a great fix-it for character deaths.

In less good news, my internet connection is FF again (frequently fucked). Sooo sick of it. Also, I really can't afford another hour on hold with my provider's tech support line, because: *points down*

Updates on these, to keep me on track with THE SCHEDULE (3000 words today and tomorrow, eep, as it's a public hol and I missed yesterday).

Whew - I'm actually there with the main raft of challenges!

My SGA Santa fic's posted - Just as Complicated as it Sounds - an OT4 romp for goddess47 . It ended up at almost 25,000 in the end. It's about the team forming a sedoretu à la Ursula le Guin's poly-marriage trope, and was a ton of fun to write.

I got a charming pre-slash John/Rodney fic from ionamcbee called Truth or Dare, in which J&R and friends play an adult-rated game.

My due South Secret Santa story's posted and they're all due for reveals very soon (exciting!), and I also posted my main Yuletide fic plus a Yuletide treat for one of the pinch-hitters, in the same fandom. Poetry FTW!  :D

I'll go have dinner on the 25th with my aunt, uncle and cousins - luckily the keto diet adapts excellently to Christmas dinner - roast fowl and then strawberries with lashings of whipped cream, tra la la!  (status report: 26 lbs lost in 3 months).

Okay, me again. I'm still working my way through a few catch-up meme posts.

Well, it's going to be more can't make than don't want to make, but here goes.

A story
A while back telesilla  requested, in a snowflake meme I think it was, that someone do a remix of Make The Devil Feel Surprise - the BDSM fic where an underage Rodney becomes dark!John's (not so very innocent) boy on Atlantis - reversing that so that an underage John becomes Rodney's boy instead. In my more lunatic moments I've considered trying to write it, but what I'd really like is for trophic  to write it, as I really love trophic's John voice and kink writing. Trophic's works on AO3 are here.

An artwork (or fifty)
I'm going to go completely over the top here and also double-dip. I'd like a graphic novella written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by the artists who made the Sandman verse, which is a crossover between the Sandman verse and SGA. I think John Sheppard and Morpheus'd hit it off, and of course he's old friends with Death. Also I'd like to see Rodney completely lose his shit around Desire and Delirium and have to be rescued. That'd be pretty cool! shit shit shit, now I've bunnied myself damn it...

 I was browsing a mail order catalogue over lunch and saw these kids' backpacks.



So of course the first thing I get is AU McSheppy thoughts where little Aidan (John's kid) and little Madison (Rodney's niece) are off to school, leading to inevitable parent-figure collision and hot sex romantic kidfic.

Yeah, I know the ages aren't right for canon and Aiden's name's alternately spelled, but still - unusual names to see randomly paired. Coinkidink? I THINK NOT!

Yes yes yes, worst journaler ever, I know.  I 'll do some sort of catch up...in a bit.


valika  made two vids at the end of the SGA 10 Years Later fest. Run, don't walk - they're both really great.

Love Love Love is the ultimate feel-good hugs and kisses vid. It's as much SG1 as SGA so there's lots there for the SG1 folks as well. Funny and poignant and man, all that kissing hit my kink buttons. Snappy editing and great clip choices, it leaves you feeling very cheerful.
There are ALL the pairings ever here, so if you're fiercely OTP this may not be for you, but I loved it.

The Replicators Strike Back spoofs a Star Wars intro then goes a little meta and has cartoon speech bubbles to tell the story. It's total crack, and very funny indeed.

Okay, so I completely suck at journalling regularly, but we knew that. /o\

I've just emerged from SGA Reversebang franticness and will do an update soon about what's been happening.

People can post any time, to the AO3 collection for the festival (just start writing SGA 10 years in the collections field). The actual date is July 16th, which is when there'll be the most happening. There should be some great stuff posted to celebrate SGA. \o/ \o/

I'm going to kick this inspiration post off. As you know, Bob, I recently wrote an SGA/LOTR fusion for SGA Secret Santa, and I'd love to see not necessarily LOTR details as such, but AUs of a Swords & Sorcery type.

There are two main reasons for this sort of AU (apart from my liking AUs a lot).

Had a big work deadline last night - up most of the night finishing it. So I'm running on fumes but I want to catch up with these Snowflake posts before I crash.

Day 13
In your own space, ask for recs. Something as simple as "I like XYZ (where XYZ is a kink, a pairing, a trope, etc.) - please rec me some.

As I've said before somewhere, I really like OT4 fic. Yeah, it can be hot, and I enjoy that aspect, but it's the found-family aspect that really does it for me - I find it cheering and comforting. I've probably read it all in SGA but I'd still love to know what other people's favorites are and be reminded about them so as to go and re-read. So mostly SGA, by which I mean John, Ronon, Rodney and Teyla, but I'll take SG-1 puppy-pile recs as well if you have any - and those ones I most likely won't know. Thank you!

I've been hammered by multiple deadlines, mostly tedious RL things, so I'm catching up with this again.

Day Nine
In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something.
One of my recent deadlines was for the sg_flyboys Cam/John exchange, so I'm going to use that artwork and drabble, as it's just been posted and I finished it during the Challenge period. It's called Flyboys Holiday, and it's over here.

Day 10
In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing...Maybe it's someone whose fanworks you always DEVOUR as soon as they're posted - who needs sleep, anyway?
This was SO HARD. There are so many great writers and artists to choose from that for a while I just couldn't. Then I saw a post on my flist from someone discovering this writer, and I thought Yes! This is someone whose work I'll devour whenever it's posted.

Day 11
In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon and explain why you love it so much.
Again - so much to choose from, but for me it has to be this clip from Stargate Atlantis "Rising II" where the city surfaces from the ocean. There's even a bit of audio with it! (I am so not a vidder). I know I'm a sap, but it always makes my chest all warm and tight when I see it. And, er, it's really kind of phallic, you know? in a terrifyingly spiky sort of way...

Trying AGAIN to post this - had it almost done last night then went to research a detail and obliterated the post with a new search - and can I just say how much I HATE that there's no 'save draft' button on the DW posting interface (second time I've wiped a complicated draft in 2 days).

Day 2: In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes.

So... I'm pretty hopeless at finding really obscure works or fandoms to rec, I'm afraid. I can only hope that a few people may not have encountered all the works or creators in this list.

I am, as ever, the world's worst journaller.
Stuff has happened in the eon since I last posted any sort of catch-up.

Most excitingly for me, one of my Sherlock kink stories has been podficced by Glittertine: The Case of the Disappearing Oxfords  \o/ \o/ !! (I made cover art and an audiobook)

I managed to finish my McShep_Match SGA story even though it was a dreadful rush at the deadline and left me a bit unsatisfied that I didn't have time to write the ending better, but I was literally faceplanting with exhaustion on the keyboard after too little sleep. It's An Unreliable Narrative, on AO3.

Busaikko and I collaborated on a work in the Podtogether challenge: Carry Me Home (SGA) (also on AO3 and note the warning, it's a horror story). It's a wonderfully creepy story and I got to do lots of fun sound-effects when I was recording it. This also marks me gradually getting back into doing some podficcing again.

And I did the illustrations for Omorka's story Through Fire and Rain (Real Ghostbusters fandom) in the 2012 Sci-Fi Big Bang - which was great fun as I got to do art with a fire demon and australopithecines. Art on AO3 (SFW)

Things I've completed which aren't posted yet: Primary artworks for the C6D Big Bang in the Slings and Arrows fandom (Geoffrey/Darren), and two artworks for "season six" (SGA).

On the down side: totally overcommitted, as usual  /o\ ! #@#!
I have a pending deadline for my ABB fic (I'll make it, but once again there won't be a lot of sleeping done as the 11th hour approaches), plus two beta-reading jobs for ABB, plus I haven't done a thing for Kink Bingo so it's looking like I'll have to do amnesty works, and, um, I also kind of might have signed on for Apocalypse Kree. Oh, and the Poly Big Bang, but that one I may have to drop, even though it's only a 10,000 word minimum, because this is getting ridiculous. Did I mention RL work's been really busy as well? *hides*

So, I guess that's one reason I haven't been journalling very much...

Okay, so I had a cartooning jag back in February and made several strips featuring "Brain" or its goa'uld version, "Bra'ain".

             What's the story? Where is Dief???
I think this is undoubtedly an illustration from my fic "In a Strange Land" where Dief and Fraser are shape-shifted tentacle-aliens as per Galaxy Quest (it's a crossover). Fraser and Dief communicate telepathically and Dief's extremely disreputable, unlike Fraser, who's desperately trying to pass as human. In the icon, Dief's doubtless getting his end away with a local poodle behind the bakery, to Fraser's dismay. And yes, I do still promise to write the sequel, in which there is Ray+Fraser+tentacles :)

I wish I knew who made this manip, but I just snagged it and modified the details slightly. Yes of course it's real, their love is so true!


             Pretty... but what does it signify to you?
It makes me think of the beach, that he's surfing - the end of the day so the light's golden towards sunset, and his beard's heavy. But it also looks ominous, post-apocalyptic. So maybe he's surfing at the end of the world, because what else can you do?


             And I have to ask: colour experiment, or is there some Deep Significance?
I made this for the AO3, because you can only have one icon and a fandom-specific, even a writing-specific one didn't work. So this is for fic and art, both. It's the 3 primary colours and the 3 secondary colours, just an abstract design that looked good. I used to use the "Mandelbrot's Ass" one but then he died and it seemed kind of disrespectful. *eyeroll* Like he cares.

David Hockney must have caught the boys relaxing in Nick's pool while on leave in California. John seems to be enjoying the view, but I do hope Rodney's got SPF100 on that ass. Hockney of course went on to do a number of these California pool paintings, including the well-known "Peter getting out of Nick's Pool".

Hi there - this is for whoever is assigned to me as my SGA secret santa.

As in my sign-up post, I'd prefer just slash please, preferably John and Rodney, although I'm fine with a within-AR1 OT3 or OT4 fic as well. Gender-shifted John and/or Rodney is also great. I'd prefer NC-17, ideally, but really any rating is OK if you're not comfortable with that. Kink is also fine. :) 

Things I wouldn't like: Too much angst - although H/C is fine, as long as there's some C after the H. Please no major character death. Prefer no prominent religious content - Rodney and I have similar views about that! I'd prefer not to get straight het with Elizabeth or Keller, please, although a threesome situation involving John and Rodney would probably be OK.

Anyway - all very exciting and I'm looking forward to taking part in this - thanks in advance!

These are a couple of thumbnails of the two pics: they're entirely worksafe.

        

The first pic is John seeing Elizabeth for the first time, after thinking she's long since died, not sure what he's seeing or if she's a replicator. They've just been wrenched into an AU Atlantis because Elizabeth keeps jumping and she pulls John with her.

In the second pic they've jumped through AUs to the one that happens to be that of Rod and geek-John from canon. In this AU, Rodney didn't save Elizabeth with the nanocytes - John made that decision and let her die, despite her being his "best friend". In the pic Elizabeth goes to see geek-John (note the flat hair) in his lab.

Notes: This load of schmaltzy crack just came to me and I had to get it out of my system so as to concentrate on my McShep Match Team Play fic. Which this would have been perfect for except that my prompt just would not fit it, even when held upside down and squinted at sideways. So, okay, apologies to those of you who hate the pokies which I acknowledge are evil objects and the cause of much suffering. And yes, it’s very wrong of me to romanticise one, but once I got bitten by the story bug I just had to do it. Maybe it should have been a pinball machine – I guess at least they could have had arms then. No I am not going to turn this in to a crack series, I’m really, really not.
