Harry Perlstadt
Harry Perlstadt, Ph.D. (University of Chicago, 1973). M.P.H. (University of Michigan, 1979) is professor emeritus of Sociology at Michigan State University. He was on the faculty for over forty years, teaching medical sociology and sociology of organizations, occupations and work. He has served as director of the MSU Program in Bioethics, Humanities and Society. He was an affiliated faculty in the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR), and Office of Medical Education Research and Development (OMERAD). In 2010 he was a Fulbright lecturer on US health care policy and politics at Semmelweis University, Budapest Hungary.
During his career, he has had one foot in academia and one foot in applied sociology and sociological practice. He has evaluated health programs and initiatives for the Kellogg Foundation (community health access), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (school based substance abuse prevention), Health Resource Services Administration (HIV-AIDS), and World Health Organization (national environmental health action plans in Europe). He worked on the Arab/Chaldean Behavior Risk Factor Survey sponsored by Michigan State University, the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
His publications include chapters in “Applied Sociology” in Handbook of 21st Century Sociology; “Applied Sociology and Sociotechnics;” The Cambridge Handbook of Sociology; “Assessing European Environmental Health Action Plans,” in Sociologists in Action; “Ethics and Values in Sociological Practice,” in Doing Sociology: Case Studies in Sociological Practice, "Bringing Sociological Theory and Practice Together," in Sociological Perspectives and "Accreditation of Sociology Programs: A Bridge to a Broader Audience," in the Canadian Journal of Sociology.
He helped found and was the first chair of the Commission on Accreditation of Programs in Applied and Clinical Sociology which promotes quality sociological education and practice through the accreditation of programs in applied, clinical, and public sociology. He chaired the ASA Sociological Practice Section, and served on the ASA Certification Committee on Social Policy & Evaluation Research and the Task Force on Assessing the Undergraduate Major, and Secretary-Treasurer of the ISA RC-46 Clinical Sociology. In 2014 he received the American Sociological Association’s Distinguished Career Award for the Practice of Sociology
He was also active in the American Public Health Association having served on its governing council, science board, joint policy committee and executive board. For thirty years he has volunteered with the American Lung Association, serving on the state and regional level as well as on the national research scientific advisory committee and national board of directors. He has been listed in Marquis Who’s Who in America; Who’s Who in the World; Who’s Who in American Education; Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare; and Who’s Who in Science & Engineering.
