About

I am Michael Qizhe Shieh, an Assistant Professor at National University of Singapore. I received my Masters' and PhD from School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University (LTI and MLD respectively). My PhD advisor was Eduard Hovy. I got my undergrad degree from the ACM Class at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
I was a student researcher working with Quoc Le and Thang Luong at Google Brain (now Google DeepMind) for 2 years. I also collaborated closely with Zihang Dai.
My original Chinese name is 谢其哲. My old papers are published under its Mandarin spelling Qizhe Xie. I now publish under Michael Qizhe Shieh for easier pronunciation for Non-Mandarin speakers.

Research & Recruitment

Research Directions: Generally, we work on core LLM research including architecture, evaluation and training objectives, with a focus on LLM reasoning.
Prospective Students: Thank you for your interests! Please apply to our PhD program. However, there is no need to directly contact me about PhD admissions as the admission is handled by the admission committee. Instead please mention my name as your potential advisor and I look forward to your applications!
