I’m Michael Janda—a designer, agency founder, and three-time author. I’ve led creative work for Disney, Google, Fox, ABC, and National Geographic. After building and selling my agency Riser and serving as Partner & CCO at EKR, I now run More Creative Academy, helping freelancers and agency owners grow profitable creative businesses.
Hello, I’m Michael Janda*
From Basement Freelancer to Selling My Agency and Everything I Learned Along the Way*
I help freelancers and creative agency owners build profitable, successful businesses.
Before launching my agency, I served as a Creative Director at Fox Studios in Los Angeles, leading digital creative for Fox Kids and Fox Family during the height of the dot-com era.
I built my agency, Riser, into a multi-million-dollar powerhouse working with top global brands before selling it in 2015, then stayed on as a partner and Chief Creative Officer during the acquisition.
Over the years, my teams created work for Disney, Google, ABC, NBC, Fox, Warner Bros., YouTube, Netflix, National Geographic, and many other world-class brands.
I’m the author of three internationally published, bestselling books on running a successful creative business.
Today, I create content, speak around the world, and mentor creatives through More Creative Academy. This is the most rewarding chapter of my entire career.
The Full Mike Janda Story*
I’ve spent more than two decades in the creative industry—designing, directing, building, scaling, speaking, writing, and helping creatives level up their businesses without burning themselves to the ground in the process.
My career started in the late ’90s when I became the Creative Director at oKID, one of the first interactive kids’ worlds on the internet. From there, Fox Studios brought me on as Senior Creative Director for Fox Kids and Fox Family, where I oversaw design, editorial, and development during the height of the dot-com era.
In 2002, I jumped out on my own and founded Riser, the creative agency I ran for 13 incredible (and occasionally chaotic) years.
We produced award-winning work for Disney, ABC, Fox, Warner Bros., Google, National Geographic, and a long list of brands that made my childhood self lose his mind. I grew Riser to a 31% average annual profit margin and a spot on the Inc. 5000 list…all while figuring it out the hard way, without a mentor.
In 2015, I sold Riser to Eli Kirk, rebranded the combined company as EKR, and served as Partner & Chief Creative Officer—helping drive 42% annual revenue growth and landing new clients including Intel, Netflix, Mercedes-Benz, and more Google projects.
Since then, my career has shifted from building creative work to building creative businesses. I’ve become a three-time author:
Burn Your Portfolio (2013)
Ahe design-industry staple read in universities worldwide
The Psychology of Graphic Design Pricing (2019)
The definitive guide to pricing creative work
Creative Business Sanity Systems (2025)
199 proven systems for running a business without losing your mind
My books have been translated into multiple languages and have taken me around the world as a keynote speaker—Sweden, Copenhagen, Dubai, London, Moscow, all over the U.S., and twice on the HOW Design Live stage.
I served as a Wix Influencer for several years and have hosted three podcasts, including Biz Buds, Two Pixels Off, and What the Helvetica?
Today, I run More Creative Academy (MCA)—my ecosystem of courses, coaching, community, retreats, and frameworks designed to help freelancers and agency owners scale with confidence. My teaching reaches millions across Instagram, YouTube, and social content that blends business strategy with real-world creative experience (and a healthy amount of humor).
No matter how many platforms I’m on, my mission is the same: Help creatives run better businesses and have better lives.

oKID
Creative Director
1998-2000
Where it all started. I joined an emerging kids’ toy and book company and built one of the internet’s earliest fully interactive children’s websites—complete with games, cartoons, and explorable worlds. I quickly moved into managing a 20-person creative and development team. oKID.com was ahead of its time, and so was the learning curve.
FOX
Senior Creative Director
(2000–2002)
At Fox Studios, I oversaw all digital creative for Fox Kids and Fox Family—design, editorial, development, brand guidelines, website launches, and marketing campaigns. It was the high-velocity crucible that prepped me for agency life (and sharpened my speed, systems, and sanity).
Riser
Founder & CEO
(2002–2015)
The agency I built from my basement into a multi-million-dollar, award-winning creative powerhouse. We served Disney, Google, ABC, Warner Bros., NBC, Fox, National Geographic, and more. Riser earned Webbys, Awwwards, FWA wins, and 16 Best of State awards. I sold this agency in 2015 after 13 profitable years since the start.
EKR
Partner & Chief Creative Officer
(2015–2018)
After selling Riser, I became a partner at EKR (the agency I sold to) and led the creative services team. We rebranded the agency, refined the business model, and grew revenue by 42% in our first year as a combined company—landing clients like Intel, Netflix, and more Google engagements. I left this agency in 2018 after my buyout completed.
When I’m Not Working*
Outside of work, I live in Salt Lake City. I have three amazing sons. I’m a mountain resident but a full-blown beach person. A vacation doesn’t hit the spot unless it’s at a beach. I love to travel and have explored Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Central and South America, Hawaii, and just about every corner of the United States. I want to see as much of this world as I possibly can and I feel so lucky to have friends in the creative industry almost everywhere I go.
I grew up playing piano and now play guitar with what might be the most overbuilt pedal board on the planet. I’m fluent in Spanish after living in Colombia, addicted to skiing and weightlifting, and forever convinced the Chicago Bears will win another Super Bowl. I’m on my third epic Jeep, recently started my motorcycle era with an Indian Springfield, and I have a collection of over 250 bobbleheads… and a life-size Han Solo in carbonite that watches over my office.
