I came away from the rain forest with a few gaming related thoughts.
We had a chance to explore the Daintree Rainforest while in Port Douglas. It is one of the places where the forest meets the reef, so we took the opportunity to go on a tour.
I’ve never been in a rainforest before. I’ve never been in a jungle before. Woods and swamps are about it in my experience. So I was unprepared for what I encountered.
When Rage Claw joined the rest of the group, they hadn’t done much. They investigated the doors that they found on the walkway. Over what appeared to be the main gate into the stone were several thick metal bars, covered in heavy chains, built into the rocks themselves. It appeared that the gate was barred from the outside. The eastern door showed evidence of a three foot thick stone gate that was slid up into the roof, behind which two doors stood open.
Whatever this place was, it was built to be locked down tightly.
Using Proficiencies with Skills
Ok, so that quick and dirty skill system kept coming up in my mind and I realized that maybe I could pick out the proficiencies that would need to be ‘fixed’ to work with the system. Let’s see how that goes.
It’s difficult to talk about the Reef and the ocean around it without descending into cliché. The phrases that spring to mind have been heard before. I certainly know them, and you do to. So I hope you’ll forgive me when I return to them. There is a simplistic truth to them that no lily gilding on my part can supplant.
I’ve been to the ocean before. Most of them, actually. I’ve flown over them many times. I’ve been to beaches to swim (or at least dip my toe). But never have I seen an ocean as blue as I saw the day we headed to the Great Barrier Reef.
As I previously mentioned, there are a plethora of ways to ‘fix’ thieves (beyond leaving them out of the game entirely). This originally started as another means of ‘fixing’ thieves, and not one I came up with on my own either (see below). However, the idea stuck with me so long that I couldn’t NOT do something with it. I know a lot of people hate skill systems with a passion, and I get that. Equally, I’ve played with a lot of players that feel hamstrung by characters without some crunch ‘meat’ on their bones. Take this as you will. Personally I could use something like this quite easily.
Hong Kong
Today we managed to make it out of our rooms for an extended time to explore the city. This was not always a given, considering I had horrble jet lag that prevented sleeping much the night before.
Due to the Executive Room we booked (we wanted to start the trip in style), we had the hotel’s buffet breakfast. It was nice, a culinary mix of a variety of sources ranging from US to British to Asian. Shrimp dim sum for breakfast? Yes please!
As I previously mentioned, there are a plethora of ways to ‘fix’ thieves (beyond leaving them out of the game entirely). So I’ll show case a few, some from other versions of the game, and others from Bloggers or my own ideas.
