Obesity rates among low-income Hispanic preschoolers are higher than those of whites, highlighting the need for understanding the cultural factors that may contribute to obesity. A survey was distributed to Hispanic Head Start families; preschooler body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Two focus groups examined caregiver perceptions about obesity and meal practices. The rate of overweight/obesity in the preschoolers was 44%, whereas, 79.4% of caregivers reported child weight as “normal.” Caregivers perceived “thinness” as a disadvantage, favored home-cooked meals, and expressed a desire for children to assimilate to mainstream foods. Obesity prevention within Head Start must account for caregiver perceptions of healthy weight and incongruities between cultural values/ practices and guidelines. Anthropophagy in Brazilian literature is not a new topic of study, and the reader should consider the work by Maria Cândida Ferreira de Almeida, Tornar-se Outro : o Topos Canibal na Literatura Brasileira (Becoming Another: the Canibal Topus in Brazilian Literature), 2002, that stands out as one of the most detailed studies on the subject. The author analyzes the issue in Macunaíma, in José de Alencar and Machado de Assis' works, among others. Beyond metaphorical studies of the subject stands the anthropological study by Forsyth 2 (1985) of the adventures of Hans Staden, a study that deals with the anthropological links of cannibalism but that also, very much in the same line of the work by Staden himself, reflects on the veracity or not of the text of 1557.

Mia Couto é um caso à parte entre os escritores da África Lusófona. O mundo mais ou menos
onírico/fantástico em que se movem as suas personagens constitui-se como um apelo ao uso
do ponto de vista da física quântica par a par com as abordagens mais tradicionais ao texto
literário. O objectivo deste estudo prende-se com a tentativa de alargar o escopo de leitura
dos interessados em literatura africana no sentido de aproximar duas culturas, a africana e a
ocidental, separadas por tradições epistemológicas muitas vezes difíceis de conciliar.

: It is common knowledge to anyone interested in Cape Verdean Studies that hunger was one of the reasons that led to emigration as a solution in itself. In Germano Almeida’s texts however hunger cannot seem to be appeased through basic food, as if  food is incapable of satisfying the everlasting internal appetites of the different characters. The kind of hunger one finds in Germano Almeida is no longer the hunger that afflicted the Cape Verde of Chiquinho. We will find a different sorts of hunger that come from political and social tensions of a democratic country still trying to make sense of itself. Food and language stand as similes and both seem to be unable to provide the necessary development of citizen and nation alike. Hunger as a phenomenon of “lack” is replaced by the principle of pleasure and by the abundance of food. This abundance, nevertheless useless, creates pathetic prose and imbecile poems that are expelled as one vomits or has diarrheas. In the end, literature and politics seem to be able to be understood through a biological metaphor that anticipates the tragic-comedy of death. In this article we will see how death is the other side of desire and appetite and how Cape Verde’s political, social and cultural situation can be analyzed through a scatological imago.

do livro Trovas de Muito Amor Para um Amado Senhor (1960) (in Hilst, 1980, 225-245)
em que Hilda Hilst usurpa a voz do masculino e inverte o objecto do poema.

One of the characteristics of post-modernist writing in general, and of Germano Almeida’s writings  in particular, is the ability to juxtapose paradoxes, not necessarily reconciling them but making them inhabit the same space. The space of desire is no exception to this rule. In this presentation I will make an attempt to identify a possible way to reconcile paradoxes within the space of desire in Almeida’s fiction.

Nós, os do Makuluso de Luandino Vieira é uma obra a uma voz, em que os tempos se condensam num presente apenas, em que os homens se unem numa terceira pessoa do plural formando uma unidade composta  por diversas partes que se completam. Numa obra em que a morte é o complemento mais adequado das vidas, justificação para a compreensão delas, José Luandino Vieira apresenta uma série de imagens femininas que distintamente modelam as diversas partes do plural masculino. Ao analisarmos essas figuras veremos até que ponto é que o Autor está consciente da dualidade feminino / masculino e até que ponto é que essa dualidade se insere ou não dentro de um regime de opostos similar ao do colonialismo / pós-colonialismo.

Em O Esplendor de Portugal a relação afectiva das personagens organiza-se através da perda da origem. O texto desenvolve-se a partir dos monólogos interiores das personagens e desse espaço em comunicação com o leitor, tecido sem noções de tempo nem de espaço. Seguimos o estudo basilar de Maria Alzira Seixo (2002) sobre esta obra e ficamos com o seguinte panorama: considerando que o esplendor de Portugal se estabelece a partir de uma correlação directa da degradação africana e a ditadura salazarista, a Autora especifica o valor de Angola, como o espaço do absurdo vivencial das personagens.

In this study we are reading Germano Almeida’s texts beyond the categories of post-modernism. Historiographic metafiction is seen as a major space for subjectivity and as a means of surmounting historical fatalism and the involved compulsion to repetition. Also, we question the role of the author as he demands the reader’s participation mainly through irony

Tendo em mente que este trabalho apenas aponta os caminhos possíveis de uma análise a que não é possível proceder na sua totalidade, observaremos de um ponto de vista teórico as características desse plano antifatalista, duma rebelião inerente contra o destino que a poesia de Jorge de Sena comporta.

Configuração de um esquema teórico dos exílios plurais de Jorge de Sena tendo em mente que muito embora o período que nos interessa com mais acuidade se restrinja às datas que vão de 1965, data que marca a chegada de Jorge de Sena aos Estados Unidos, a 1972, data da produção de “Sobre Esta Praia...” é impossível não contextualizar esta noção num espaço e num tempo muito anteriores, na realidade, desde os seus primeiros textos do período da adolescência.

Uma das características da escrita pós-modernista em geral, e de Germano Almeida, especificamente, é a capacidade de fazer confluir os paradoxos. Não necessariamente conciliando-os mas simplesmente fazendo-os habitar o mesmo espaço. E o espaço do desejo não é excepção a esta regra. Resta-nos descobrir qual a solução que Germano Almeida propõe para efectivar esta confluência.

Em Inglaterra, relembrando Garrett e Herculano, ouvimos a voz de Sena inserida num passado nacional de exílio que o autor ainda e apenas pode pressentir. Se no espaço que nos ocupa não é possível oferecer uma visão completa da presença de Inglaterra na obra destes escritores é pelo menos possível insinuá-la como um traço comum, influência marcante e pretexto para espaços de escrita que de Inglaterra se estendem a Portugal, sempre.

Neste estudo iremos destacar o conjunto das cartas privadas trocadas entre Jorge de Sena e Mécia de Sena durante as duas estadas de Jorge de Sena em Inglaterra, 1952 e 1957 por contraponto ao conjunto de cartas que se pode encontrar em Inglaterra Revisitada ; conjuntamente com duas palestras intituladas “Viagem à Volta da Literatura Inglesa com Algumas Incidências Sobre a Situação da Cultura” e “Inglaterra Revisitada”, ambas proferidas no Instituto Britânico do Porto a convite da Associação Luso-Britânica.

This paper will analyze the first biography of Chiquinha Gonzaga, Chiquinha Gonzaga O Abre Alas (1939) by Mariza Lira and the different socio-political contexts that explain the distortion and key omissions in the composer's biography. This scenario will be analyzed in parallel with the image of Chiquinha as the press chose to offer.

In this article we will explore its historical and social relations with modern Carnival in Brazil while paying special attention to Mikhail Bakhtin and Roberto da Matta’s theories.

EnglishMia Couto is considered a special case in the field of African Lusopho­ne writers due to the quality of his writing. His texts are imbedded of a magical, mythical world that nevertheless depicts the reality of Lusophone Africa. These characteristics together with the exceptional character of the themes on which he focuses constitute an invitation to apply to his works the concepts derived from quantum physics and the science of cognition.
