The shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the implementation of digital technolog... more The shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the implementation of digital technology to advance many new applications. Digital applications were believed to be indispensable for changes in learning environments and strategies that would enhance the capacity and quality of learning through focused motivation, communicative interaction, and stronger selfdetermination. This text will discuss prominent arguments for digital learning and digital technologies that might initiate a digital turn. To this end, this paper reflects on the psychological and mental conditions of human learning, evaluates the potential opportunities of digital tools within the context of teaching and learning, and concludes with consequences for music learning in public schools.

For this, it is impossible to evaluate or even mention each individual contribution nor to just pick up a few of the most important texts to rank them according to their impact on music pedagogy. Rather, it is intended to draw some general lines across the varied aspects and themes addressed by the editor(s) and authors. In this regard, a statistical survey of topics and categories may help to follow the development of the journal from the beginning up to now. However, I will also point to aspects that are critical or need to be deepened or extended. At large, this review strives for an appraisal of the journal in its entirety with a brief prospect of future intentions.

In seiner kulturhistorischen Monographie zu Marx, Wagner und Nietzsche hat der Politologe Herfrie... more In seiner kulturhistorischen Monographie zu Marx, Wagner und Nietzsche hat der Politologe Herfried Münkler jüngst die vielfältigen Verbindungen zwischen Nietzsche und Wagner und deren Nähe und Distanz herausgearbeitet. 1 Dem ist an dieser Stelle nichts hinzuzufügen; vielmehr soll hier eine Seite des Philosophen beleuchtet werden, die bei dem Fokus auf seine Schriften oft vernachlässigt wird: seine starke Affinität zur Musik und seine musikalische Begabung, die sich in pianistischen Improvisationen und eigenen Kompositionen niedergeschlagen hat. Dass ein Philosoph von der Bedeutung und Wirkung eines Friedrich Nietzsche sich auch als Komponist betätigt und verstanden hat, ist ungewöhnlich und ruft die Frage hervor, wie sich sein Philosophieren und Komponieren zueinander verhalten und welchen künstlerischen Rang seine kompositorischen Arbeiten beanspruchen können. Schon im Schüleralter wird erkennbar, welch hohen Stellenwert die Musik in seinem Leben einnimmt. Und noch während der Gymnasialzeit bleibt offen, ob sein Weg ihn zur Philologie, zur Dichtung oder zur Musik führen soll. Die Musik und die klassischen alten Sprachen treten dann aber immer mehr in den Vordergrund und bestimmen sein Leben. Die Musik fasziniert ihn aber weiterhin weniger wegen ihrer formalen Strenge, sondern weil sie ihm die Möglichkeit bietet, emotionaler Ausdruck der jeweiligen Befindlichkeit seines Erlebens und Denkens zu spiegeln. Und so wie sich später sein Philosophieren statt in einer systematischen Lehre in einzelnen Aphorismen vollzieht, so äußert er sich pianistisch am liebsten in weit ausschwingenden, rhapsodischen Improvisationen -einer Stilform, die auch die ausgeführten Kompositionen formal prägt. Als Dilettant im besten Wortsinn verfügte er nicht über die notwendigen kompositionstheoretischen Grundlagen; seine Kompositionen entfalten sich daher häufig in einem Wildwuchs musikalischer Ideen ohne klare Struktur und formale Kontrolle der musiktheoretischen Grundlagen. Dennoch bleibt eine natürliche musikalische Begabung unverkennbar. Jugendliche Ambitionen Aufgewachsen in einem lutherischen Pfarrhaus in Röcken im Kreis Merseburg in der preußischen Provinz Sachsen wäre ihm eine theologische Laufbahn vorgezeichnet gewesen. Die humanistische Ausbildung im Domgymnasium Naumburg und in der Klosterschule Schulpfor-1 Münkler: Marx Wagner Nietzsche. Welt im Umbruch. ta hätte den Weg dahin ebnen können. Aber schon früh zeigte sich seine musikalische Neigung. 2 Eines der frühesten Zeugnisse liefert ein Blatt um 1851, auf dem der Sechsjährige auf selbstgezogenen Notenlinien einige Töne (man mag noch nicht von einer Melodie sprechen) notiert, die er möglicherweise auf dem Klavier zusammengesucht hatte. Doch in die Mitte des Blattes zeichnet er einen Turm oder ein Schiff und signiert es selbstbewusst mit einem großem "FN." 3 Abb. 1 Handschriftliches Notenblatt (um 1851). Goethe-und Schiller-Archiv. In den wöchentlichen Klavierstunden spielte er Sonaten und Variationen von Beethoven und beschäftigte sich mit Haydn-Sinfonien, die er in der Bearbeitung für Klavier zu vier Händen erhalten hatte. Überdies lauschte er als 13-oder 14-Jähriger im Naumburger Dom den Chorproben. Nach der Aufführung von Händels Messias fasste er "den ernstlichen Entschluß, etwas ähnliches zu componiren." 4 Der tiefe Eindruck, den die vokale Kirchenmusik auf ihn ausübte, veranlasste verschiedene Kirchenkompositionen und Entwürfe. Der Portenser Stipendiat zeigte dann neben dem Interesse an den alten Sprachen auch eine starke Hinwendung zu Dichtung und Musik und wirkte im Schulchor bei Festen und Empfängen mit. ABSTRACT In a first study on mass balancing oscillations in the bowing of violinists (Hasselbach et al. 2010) the results supported the theoretically derived assumption that mass balancing oscillations constitute a characteristic pattern of expert violinists' motion. The question emerged as to whether it is possible to learn and train this ability within the scope of violin lessons in children. The present micromotion study uses 3D-kinematics and aims first to reveal the incidence of this characteristic pattern in the bowing of violinists between the ages of 10 and 15, and second to investigate to what extent a specially developed training affects mass balancing oscillations. Two samples of ten string instrument players – with different teachers but matched in age and year of instrumental instruction – performed the same musical task as the adult university violin students in the 2010 study: repetitive motions in a G-major scale, but at different tempi. Mass balancing oscillations were measured and quantified as complementary motion of hand and elbow (CM). The incidence of mass balancing oscillations within the (pre) teen violin students was comparable to the lowest expert level in the 2010 study (see Figure 1). The difference between the mean values of the two samples was not significant and did not exceed 30% of systematic variance at the outset. Music education in Australia is undergoing many changes occasioned by new structures in the final... more Music education in Australia is undergoing many changes occasioned by new structures in the final years of secondary schooling and also at the tertiary level. At the secondary level students are being offered a broader curriculum with, in many cases, less rigid music subjects. Of course debate will continue for some time over the question of generality versus specialization. Although the trend is evident throughout Australia, the problem of offering a broader-based curriculum is not being addressed uniformly by each State or Territory. At the same time there have been some calls for a ’national curriculum’, but even if desirable (a highly debated issue) it would appear to present insurmountable problems for music as for other subjects and, indeed, for administrators! Australia is currently experiencing a spate of Federal government enforced amalgamations of tertiary institutions. Although the process of establishing multicampus institutions and thus reducing the overall number of tertiary institutions is not complete, it is already having serious implications for courses in music and music education.

This investigation is concerned with psychological and neurobiological aspects of music learning ... more This investigation is concerned with psychological and neurobiological aspects of music learning that is understood as a process of incrementally differentiating mental representations. Because mental representation is reflected by cortical activation patterns, different learning and teaching strategies will act on specific changes of cortical activation. Those changes were assessed prior to and after a learning phase during which 9 subjects had undergone distinct teaching strategies for developing different modes of mental representation. DC-potentials were recorded from bilateral electrode positions while subjects listened to 60 unaccompanied melodies. Data of all trials were compared using a repeated measurement ANO VA. Listening produces a pronounced activation especially over bilateral brain areas without preponderance of the right or left hemisphere. In Jeanne Bamberger's (1991) instructive case study on Jeff's learning, Bamberger observed and sy... more In Jeanne Bamberger's (1991) instructive case study on Jeff's learning, Bamberger observed and systematically ordered altering states of mental representations. In this study, Bamberger introduced and discussed a differentiated perspective on various forms of representation. In addressing the processing of music in the mind, mental representations can refer specifically to neural correlates of music or they can address more metaphoric ideas. Therefore, there is a proposed differentiation between mental representations if the mind is involved and neural representations if the brain is addressed. Furthermore, corporeal sensations and bodily excitations provide a necessary prerequisite for the development of mental and neural representations. Empirical movement studies support the essential role of body movement for music perception and production. These studies also confirm a strong interaction of motion control, motor coordination, and musical abilities as well as underpinning the complexity of learning through the development of musical representations as a core issue in music learning.

At the same time there have been some calls for a ’national curriculum’, but even if desirable (a highly debated issue) it would appear to present insurmountable problems for music as for other subjects and, indeed, for administrators! Australia is currently experiencing a spate of Federal government enforced amalgamations of tertiary institutions. Although the process of establishing multicampus institutions and thus reducing the overall number of tertiary institutions is not complete, it is already having serious implications for courses in music and music education.

This investigation is concerned with psychological and neurobiological aspects of music learning ... more This investigation is concerned with psychological and neurobiological aspects of music learning that is understood as a process of incrementally differentiating mental representations. Because mental representation is reflected by cortical activation patterns, different learning and teaching strategies will act on specific changes of cortical activation. Those changes were assessed prior to and after a learning phase during which 9 subjects had undergone distinct teaching strategies for developing different modes of mental representation. DC-potentials were recorded from bilateral electrode positions while subjects listened to 60 unaccompanied melodies. Data of all trials were compared using a repeated measurement ANO VA. Listening produces a pronounced activation especially over bilateral brain areas without preponderance of the right or left hemisphere. In Jeanne Bamberger's (1991) instructive case study on Jeff's learning, Bamberger observed and sy... more In Jeanne Bamberger's (1991) instructive case study on Jeff's learning, Bamberger observed and systematically ordered altering states of mental representations. In this study, Bamberger introduced and discussed a differentiated perspective on various forms of representation. In addressing the processing of music in the mind, mental representations can refer specifically to neural correlates of music or they can address more metaphoric ideas. Therefore, there is a proposed differentiation between mental representations if the mind is involved and neural representations if the brain is addressed. Furthermore, corporeal sensations and bodily excitations provide a necessary prerequisite for the development of mental and neural representations. Empirical movement studies support the essential role of body movement for music perception and production. These studies also confirm a strong interaction of motion control, motor coordination, and musical abilities as well as underpinning the complexity of learning through the development of musical representations as a core issue in music learning.
