The goal was to find out whether children (i) observe principle C in clefts like It was Spot that he brushed and (ii) access bound-variable interpretations in clefts like It was her pig that every girl carried, despite the lack of c-command between relevant elements in the surface representation. Our experimental finding was that children behave like adults. This suggests that children do not rely solely on the word order of sentences encountered in their linguistic input, but use mechanisms made available by innate linguistic knowledge for interpretation.*

Assuming morphologically derived causative constructions share the same structural status with McGinnisÕ (2001, 2004) applicative constructions in the spirit of Marantz (1993), this paper provides evidence that locality constraints on A-movement exist in Japanese and that they should interact with phrasal and ÔphasalÕ structures. Furthermore, this analysis can provide a unified explanation to the (un)availability of long passives both in causative and applicative constructions in various languages. * I thank Duk-ho An, Hiroshi Aoyagi, Ilhan Cagri, Youngmi Jeong, Heidi Harley, Chigusa Morita, and Tomokazu Takehisa for discussion. Special thanks go to Cedric Boeckx for his suggestions and encouragement. I am also grateful for feedback from the audience at NELS 35, Minimalist Theorizing Workshop at Indiana University, and the 6th Seoul International Conference on Generative Grammar, especially Sung-ho Ahn, Yoshihisa Kitagawa, and Hang-jin Yoon. I also thank two anonymous reviewers, whose comments made this a better paper. Abbreviations are as follows.

Everyone, seems to his! rnother 1\ to be handsome. Note that the fronting of the Q-eicmcnt with local clause internal scrambling also cancels WCO-effects in (II). This is analogous to the cases in (10) if, as Saito (1992) argues, local clause internal scrambling is a species of Amovement. (II)?? John-ga [Mary-ga pro, a!ta)-atode dono hito,-ni-mo alia. In this case, the attracted maximal projection can be adjoined to a head by Uriagereka’s (1999) Multiple-Spell-Out. Given this innovation, a possible way to derive postpositions from prepositions will be shown, while dispensing with AGRP and the special status of the Spec-head relation, in order to maintain Kayne’s (1994) LCA within the framework proposed in Chomsky (1998). In addition, N-to-D movement in various languages is also explored.
