Welcome to Codidact Meta!

Codidact Meta is the "town hall" (meta-discussion site) for the Codidact community network and the Codidact software. Whether you have bug reports or feature requests, support questions or rule discussions that touch the whole network – this is the site for you.

Recently, I posted electrical.codidact.com/comments/thread/11173#comment-27698, which cites two images from Wikipedia, and another from elsewhere.

Although citing versioned MediaWiki URIs from Wikipedia isn't problematic, because they'll never become 404s, I've been forced to cite szapphone.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/usb-c-pinout-diagram.webp, because I am unable to paste images into comments, which may well become so.

A workaround may exist: to post an image to an external hoster, [1] then embed that image with a CommonMark hyperlink (![]()). However, I've yet to ascertain whether that operates either, and [2] it, regardless, wouldn't be convenient, nor significantly more stable.

Embedding images in comment threads could take up a lot of space (particularly for the inline view, below posts), but as I read the question, the concern is primarily about durability of external resources. What if we had some way to upload an image while writing a comment that would become a link rather than a displayed image? Something like the image upload for posts, but with different rendering?

Optional per community

I can imagine communities that would welcome images in comments, and communities that would prefer comments to be kept text only. We could have a community level (or possibly category level) setting to switch between showing images in comments or not.

Upload either way

For communities that choose to disable the display of images in comments, we could still have the image upload dialog box as suggested in Monica's answer, so linking to an image (rather than displaying in the comment) is easy and they are hosted on Codidact rather than a third party site that may disappear eventually.

Comments are not for content. Actually that's up to each site, but there seems to be consensus to avoid the messy comment environment of elsewhere you might be familiar with.

Comments are definitely not for content on the Electrical Engineering site. See the last section of electrical.codidact.com/help/intro, which you were supposed to have read before posting on the site.

In this case, not being able to include images in a comment was actually helpful, since it prevented an even bigger abuse of comments.

Perhaps images in comments might be useful on some sites, although I don't think there are any of those currently. If that is eventually allowed, it will be important for individual sites to be able to opt out.

I don't understand what you refer to as abuse, nor how the cited documentation elaborates. (2 comments)
