As long as this continues, it would be helpful to have a feature showing all new activities across all communities, so the participants could react more quickly to questions, without having to check every single community by hand.

That sounds like exactly what you can use the dashboard for. The dashboard will give you the new-activity indicator dot for every community on the network, for each category individually, all on a single page.

That page also has more information for people with certain levels of access, such as pending moderator flags or suggested edits. It's a good place to keep an eye on the entire network at a glance.
