Abstract:
This research study aims to investigate academic dishonesty tendency, alienation to university and anomie of pre-service English language teachers studying at a state university in Turkey in the 2017-2018 academic year. In this study, academic dishonesty is supposed to include the acts of cheating and plagiarism (Roig & DeTommaso, 1995), alienation is the state of psychological estrangement from a culture with feelings of powerlessness, normlessness and social isolation (Seeman, 1991), and anomie is the individual’s lack of integration in social life (Srole, 1956). Although they are limited in number, there exist some previous studies on alienation and anomie in relation with academic dishonesty at educational context. To illustrate, if students are more alienated, they are found to be more likely to cheat (Whitley, 1998). In another research study related to the impact of anomie on academic dishonesty with the university students of the business school, a correlation is found between anomie and cheating (Caruana et al., 2000). In order to define the perspectives of participants Academic Dishonesty Tendency Scale (ADTS) by Eminoğlu (2008), Alienation Scale by Dean (1961) and Anomie Scale by Srole (1956) are used. Any possible relationship between scores of ADTS and alienation as well as between scores of ADTS and anomie are examined as two presumptive reasons for academic dishonesty behavior. Collected data are analyzed for normality, then descriptive and correlation statistics are taken into use in order to obtain the result of research. Lastly, limitations related with participants and data collection procedure are stated and ideas for further studies are suggested. Upon the limited number of research studies on alienation and anomie in relation with academic dishonesty, this study intends to contribute to the current literature with the results of psychometric instruments.

The use of technology in English language lessons has evolved from the pioneering technology integration applications that involve projecting pre-prepared transparent slide papers on the classroom wall with OHP (over-head-projector) devices and has reached to interactive and simultaneous language activity applications with smart mobile devices used by students today. Especially with the widespread use of second-generation web-based tools, namely Web 2.0 tools such as podcasts, blogs, wikis, educational game platforms for educational purposes, technological applications, programs and internet resources have been integrated into language teaching environments in planning, teaching and even assessment stages of an English language lesson. English lessons designed face-to-face or through distance education can be gamified using online or offline applications, programs and web pages. This study aims to examine the usability of ‘Kahoot’, an online student response system-based Web 2.0 tool, to teach English language skills and sub-skills of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation in the light of the existing literature. Within the scope of the study, the content and types of learning games called ‘Kahoots’ were introduced, it was explained that the contents prepared by people from different countries could be used and new content could be prepared, and their usage in English teaching was explained.

However, in most cases textbooks are defined and prescribed by the main authority of the education system, school administrators, a responsible teacher or similar stakeholders, and students' preferences are not included in the process. This study aimed at examining the ideas of English language learners toward textbooks and their epistemological beliefs. The questionnaire on textbook preference in foreign language teaching (Oruç & Yavuz, 2013) and the central epistemological beliefs scale (Oksal et al., 2006) were administered to determine the participants' textbook preferences and epistemological beliefs in 2017. The findings of the study showed that students attached great importance to the preference for textbooks and scored medium or high on the administered instrument. It was reported that most of the participants regarded the ideal textbook as "an activity source for students to practice and communicate" and considered the student book as the main component of the textbook package. Similarly, most of the participants stated that the content of textbooks should be function-based, and speaking was emphasized as the main language skill that should be addressed in textbooks, followed by reading, listening and writing skills according to the average scores. The findings on epistemological beliefs showed that students had epistemological beliefs at medium level and that the "belief in supernatural powers" dimension was the primary source of knowledge. In light of these findings and the existing studies in the literature, it was stated that student participation in textbook preference is important and necessary and that there may be a bidirectional relationship between textbook preference and students' epistemological beliefs that can affect each other.

It has gone beyond being a language of a particular nation and has become a common communication tool that responds to the communication needs of individuals around the world with different mother tongues and cultural backgrounds. Therefore, in relevant literature English language is described with different labels such as EFL, ESL, WE, ELF, EIL and EIcL and countries that use English in different ways are classified as inner, outer and expanding circle countries. The aim of this study is to make a comparative analysis of the grades in which English language is first started to be taught in primary level public schools in outer and expanding circle countries around the world. Within the scope of this study, it was stated that in most of the outer and expanding circle countries around the world, English education started from the first or second grade in public schools, and in Turkey, English education was given in the following classes starting from the second grade of primary school. It has been stated that English education is given importance because it is thought that the English education given in Turkey will help Turkish citizens use the common language effectively to communicate with the citizens of other countries, and thus enable the country to reach an advanced level in political, scientific, military, economic and social fields.

In addition, in our world, which is described as a global village with great developments in information, communication and transportation technologies, it has become a normal situation for individuals with different cultural backgrounds to come together and communicate for different reasons, and this reality has turned intercultural communication into a skill that needs to be acquired. This study aims to examine the intercultural communicative competence (ICC) and cultural components (CC) perspectives of preservice teachers of English language studying in the first year and fourth year in a Turkish university setting during the 2014-2015 academic year spring term and looking for any difference between the test scores and variables of grade, gender, and GPA (Grade Point Average). The required data were collected from 85 participants with the ICC Questionnaire (Mirzaei & Forouzandeh, 2013) and the Inventory of CC (Razı, 2012). The results indicated that participants performed high scores in the ICC questionnaire and CC inventory. Moreover, the t-test results indicated that there was a significant difference between different genders and GPA groups and no significant difference between participants in the first year and fourth year of the university. According to the correlation results, high and moderate positive correlations were found between ICC, its components, and CC scores of pre-service teachers of the English language. It can be concluded that the participants had high levels of ICC and CC as well as ICC and CC scores differed regarding the gender and GPA variables, and ICC levels and CC levels had a positive correlation.

In alignment with their significance, they are often evaluated and examined in terms of many elements such as content, method, achievements, and skills. Recently, they have also been scrutinized from a more socio-cultural perspective, considering gender representations, equity, racial inclusivity, and cultural diversity. Within this tendency, this study aimed to investigate the status of gender and gender equality in two English textbooks used in tertiary-level English courses offered for the first-year students of a state university in Turkey within quantitative and qualitative perspectives by using Fairclough's (1989) model of critical discourse analysis. Of the two English textbooks, one was published by a national publishing house and the other by an international one. Female and male representations in visuals and written texts were investigated and the equality of genders was analyzed with a critical viewpoint. The results indicated that there exists approximate equality in gender representation in visuals and texts of the textbooks within a quantitative perspective; however, the qualitative analysis of gender representation according to the values of firstness, titles, and occupational roles yielded a gender bias in favor of men. Consequently, this study made suggestions for enhancing gender equality within English language textbooks.

It is a known fact that human beings have used various tools for different purposes since prehistoric times. The use of tools, which started with chipped stone and wood pieces in the historical time, continued with tools made from materials such as copper, bronze and iron that gave their name to prehistoric periods, and the use of technological and electronic devices together with internet infrastructure in the contemporary age has completely changed the world and way of human life. As civilization develops, the tools used also develop, and likewise, the development of civilization accelerates as advanced tools are used. For this reason, it can be mentioned that there is a two-way relationship between civilization and tool use. English language is regarded as the lingua franca with its changing role in communication, educat... more English language is regarded as the lingua franca with its changing role in communication, education, technology, business and daily life (Dewey, 2007). In an increasingly interconnected world, English Language Teaching (ELT) encounters a wide spectrum of challenges to meet the requirements of intercultural communication. The change experienced in the teaching process of the English language necessitates to focus on the challenges of living and working in a globalized world. One way of achieving global ELT is to integrate global issues (GIs). Today, several GIs can be integrated into ELT ranging from climate change to gender equality, human rights, migration, conflict, poverty, racism, pandemics, and more to common problems of humanity awaiting to be solved on the global scale. Focusing on this reality, this study synthesizes the current research related to the GIs and exemplifies the various GIs in ELT. Incorporating GIs into ELT can be advantageous for developing English language learners' knowledge, skills, values, and awareness of global issues so that they can become engaged global citizens. GIs can contribute to the development of learners' perceptions of global citizenship by enhancing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, increasing awareness of global challenges and opportunities, and advancing intercultural communication abilities. However, integrating GIs can present challenges, as it is difficult to teach them due to their multifaceted nature, and may necessitate special training or teacher education resources. Furthermore, it is not always possible to discuss GIs with mutual respect and comprehension.

English language has undergone many changes during its long journey starting from the Old English period to its use today as a tool of communication all around the world. Fifteen thousand years ago, English language was used for the first time by the members of three tribes; the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes who invaded Britain during the 5th century AD. English language has evolved through Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English and Late Modern English periods and it has reached its present form and function. Today with 369.9 million first language (L1) speakers, 978.2 million second language (L2) speakers and 1.348 billion total speakers, English is the most spoken language in the world and it also has official statues in 75 countries and it is actively used in 188 countries. The use of the English language on such a large scale and for different purposes has led to the discussion of the status and belonging of the language, and as a result of these development, different descriptions of the English language have been made with different names. The most common of these nomenclatures are as follows; first language (L1), second language (L2), English as a second language (ESL), English as a foreign language (EFL), English as a lingua franca (ELF), world Englishes (WE), English as an international language (EIL), English as an intercultural language (EIcL). The aim of this study is to investigate the different terms used to address the English language according to its native and non-native users and the contexts in which the language is used, and to determine the definitions that are in demand today.

The concept of culture encompasses knowledge, belief, values, norms, social behaviors and similar phenomena that characterize a community. As one of the elements of culture, language is depicted as an inseparable whole with culture and is likened to the two sides of a coin. For this reason, being exposed to the target culture appears as a natural result of the process of learning a target language. However, the target culture is exposed in different ways depending on the context of learning the target language as a second language in a natural setting or a foreign language with a formal education. The changing needs of today's world and the new lifestyle bring along the need to become multilingual and multicultural individuals. As the process of being multilingual brings along the process of being multicultural, it is accepted as an indicator that these two phenomena, multilingualism and multiculturalism, affect each other and that the related processes progress hand in hand. The activity of learning a target language goes far beyond just learning the forms in the language and requires the inclusion of cultural elements in the language learning, and this is why systematic language learning theories and approaches bring along the teaching of cultural elements. In this way, culture teaching activities facilitate the process of learning the target language and at the same time aim to raise awareness of individuals toward their own culture and target culture. The process of adaptation to the target culture can be theorized under the headings of acculturation, enculturation and teaching culture in language learning. In relation to related concepts, the aim of this study is to address the concept of culture, to examine the elements of culture and to analyze different acculturation processes in target language learning processes.

The age of technology or digital age we live in has significantly affected the education processes and made it possible to redesign our learning and teaching methods, techniques and tools. Major advances in information and communication technologies (ICT) have made technology integration accessible to all teaching practices, including English language teaching. The use of technology, which is included in the process with the use of simple mirroring devices in English teaching processes, can now be realized with computers, smart devices and interactive applications. In English teaching, thanks to the interactive applications that can be downloaded to mobile devices, the number of teaching contents that appeal to all language skills and that you can study at any time inside and outside the classroom, which can be personalized, has increased and it has become accessible to more people. The use of QR codes has become widespread in order to reach a specific resource, and language teaching and learning experience has been moved to different dimensions with augmented reality and virtual reality applications. Technology, technological tools and internet use, which are becoming more and more common in our lives, are defined as web technology. The evolution of the World Wide Web (www) or shortly web is grouped as Web 0.0, Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and Web.3.0 in a common universal way according to the type and content of internet access. In addition to Web 2.0, which currently uses multimedia features to include more communication and cooperation in English teaching, Web 3.0 is thought to enrich language teaching by offering more interactive learning tools and environments with new technologies such as augmented reality, virtual reality, artificial intelligence technology, metadata and metaverse. In the light of relevant advancement in technology integration in English language teaching, the aim of this study is to examine the impact of Web 3.0 technology on language teaching and learning processes in connection with Web 2.0 technology and to discuss its potential benefits and threats.

study. Additionally, 26 learners out of 38 stated that they had a development at their listening skills while 5 learners stated that they didn’t have any development at their listening skills and 7 learners preferred not to answer this question about their listening skill. It has been observed that students’ listening skills were developed to a certain extent during the research process. Learners developed positive attitudes towards the foreign language. And they developed their listening skills to a certain extent.
Finally, this book focuses on listening skill in foreign language teaching and learning processes and relates listening skill to listening techniques and strategies. In the book, foreign language teaching materials are examined, in-class listening lesson observations are included, quantitative and qualitative data obtained from student achievement tests and self-assessment processes are reported and the academic development of listening skill is examined. I hope that this book will make a valuable contribution to the existing literature and provide a good reading experience for all readers.

Technology integration, which started in English classes with simple tool use such as the projection of pre-prepared slides on a wall with OHP projectors or having listening activities with cassettes has reached a very different dimension nowadays with the use of computer programs, applications, and websites that can be used with technological tools such as televisions, computers, tablets, smartphones, and smartboards.
In 1989 Tim Burners-Lee proposed creating a global bridge area that would be accessible from any network connection. For this purpose, the first website prepared by Tim Burners-Lee was launched in 1991. With this still active web page (www.w3.org), the doors of the internet world have been opened to people with the concept of the 'World Wide Web' (Tobin, 2012). Today, with internet access becoming accessible to more individuals, second generation web-based tools such as wikis, podcasts, blogs, online quiz apps and educational game platforms are used in almost all proficiency levels and educational institutions for educational purposes.
It is a great excitement that this book entitled “Intercultural Communication and Cultural Identity in Learning English as an International Language” has been developed as a significant contribution to the field of English language teaching with a focus on intercultural communication. This book aims to shed light on intercultural communicative competence and cultural identity and provide essential perspectives for comprehending and teaching intercultural communication.
Intercultural communication refers to the interaction between people from different cultural backgrounds and the sharing of information, ideas, and emotions and puts great importance on the values, beliefs, actions, and identities of individuals that are fundamentally shaped by their own culture. In order to communicate effectively and establish good connections, every individual should be able to become culturally aware and understand intercultural communication in our globalized world. English, as the world's lingua franca, plays a crucial role in understanding cultural differences and developing intercultural communicative competence.
The first chapter of the book introduces the topic of intercultural communication and emphasizes how intercultural communication influences language learning processes and reshapes forms of communication in a globalized world. In the second chapter, the author explores theoretical frameworks on culture, cultural identity, communicative competence and intercultural communicative competence together with the models of intercultural competence. The third chapter of the book focuses on methodological practices about research design in a systematic manner. The fourth chapter deals with the findings of the research and presents the data collected in qualitative and quantitative manners. The data collected on intercultural communication and cultural identity are analyzed and reported in detail and meticulously in a mixed-methods research design using qualitative and quantitative analyses. The fifth chapter of the book consists of discussion and conclusion sections of the study. The results of the study showed that the participants' intercultural communicative competence levels increased as a result of the intercultural communicative competence training which was systematically developed within the scope of the study. On the other hand, the cultural identity level of the participants did not change in a significant way and stayed the same after the intercultural communicative competence training.
