In this study, the oral and dental health of the skeletons unearthed from 4 wells in Pisidia Anti... more In this study, the oral and dental health of the skeletons unearthed from 4 wells in Pisidia Antiocheia excavations (Yalvaç, Isparta) were examined. The wells found in 2013 were numbered as 33 and 39 and the wells found in 2014 were numbered as 65 and 75. There were 22 skeletons dated to the Byzantine Period (11-12th CE). 13 skeletons belong to adults, while 5 skeletons belong to non-adult individuals. The ages of 4 individuals could not be determined. Of a total of 306 teeth, 91.9% (281) are permanent and 8.1% (25) are decidious teeth. 28 (9.9%) permanent teeth belong to females and 108 (38.3%) permanent teeth belong to males. The gender of 145 (51.6%) permanent teeth could not be determined. Indicators such as calculus, caries, ante-mortem tooth loss (AMTL), hypoplasia, alveolar bone loss and abscess were evaluated. The percentages of the mentioned indicators above are as follows: Caries 7.47%; enamel hypoplasia 33.1%; calculus 42.7%; alveolar loss 45.2%; AMTL 8.9% and abscess 5.69%. Results were compared with other contemporary populations. The distribution of pathologies according to tooth types are as follows: In incisors calculus and alveolar loss, in canines enamel hypoplasia, in premolars caries, in molars AMTL and abscesses were more common. Distribution of the pathologies in the maxilla and mandibula, and also in the gender groups were determined. In the maxilla enamel hypoplasia, and in the mandibula AMTL were observed mostly. There was no significant difference in other pathologies. In males, caries, AMTL, abscesses, and in females hypoplasia, calculus, alveolar loss were more common. No dental pathology was found in the 25 decidious teeth.

Öz Burdur'un daha önce Paleolitik Çağ açısından yeterince araştırılmamış olması, konumu ve coğrafyası nedeniyle olası potansiyeli göz önüne alınarak 2021 yılında "Burdur İli Paleolitik Çağ Yüzey Araştırması"na başlanmıştır. 2021 araştırma sezonunda Bucak ve Kemer ilçelerinde yürütülen arazi çalışmalarında yaygın yaya yüzey araştırması yöntemi uygulanmıştır. Ekibimiz, uygun alanlarda 5'er metre aralıklarla yürüyerek arazi taraması yapmıştır. Ancak araştırma alanlarımızın daha çok, dağlık, kayalık ve yer yer sık çalı örtülerinin bulunduğu alanlardan oluşması nedeniyle bu yöntem yalnızca tarla, bahçe gibi düzlük alanlarda uygulanabilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda, elde edilen yontmataş bulgular daha çok Alt ve Orta Paleolitik dönemlere ait özellikler göstermektedir. Bununla birlikte Paleolitik Çağ'ın daha geç dönemlerine işaret eden az sayıda bulgu da mevcuttur. Gerek Bucak gerekse Kemer'de yapılan araştırmalar net olarak dönemsel ayrımlar yapmaya olanak verecek karakteristik bulgular vermemiştir. Her iki alanda devam edecek çalışmaların yeni bulgularla, daha net sonuçlar vereceği kanısındayız.

The Byzantine settlement history of Miletus, an ancient harbour city on the west coast of Asia Mi... more The Byzantine settlement history of Miletus, an ancient harbour city on the west coast of Asia Minor, was long obscured by a lack of quantitative data. This paper provides such data and fills in some crucial gaps in our knowledge of the urban development and in our understanding of the rural hinterland. The city appears to have lost much of its former population by the 6th century A.D., which was a particularly prosperous time for the surrounding villages. Thereafter, agriculture continued relatively undisturbed throughout the Persian and Arab invasions, the middle Byzantine period – with considerable prosperity at rural sites – and the Turkish conquest. The city, in contrast, was deserted during the middle Byzantine period. Middle Byzantine prosperity turns out to have been a rural phenomenon of the agricultural hinterland, and urbanism was dead long before the arrival of the Turks, who had to rebuild Miletus under the new name of Balat.

Terrestrial fossil records from the SW Anatolian basins are crucial both for regional correlation... more Terrestrial fossil records from the SW Anatolian basins are crucial both for regional correlations and palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. By reassessing biostratigraphic constraints and incorporating new fossil data, we calibrated and reconstructed the late Neogene and Quaternary palaeoenvironments within a regional palaeogeographical framework. The culmination of the Taurides in SWAnatolia was followed by a regional crustal extension from the late Tortonian onwards that created a broad array of NE-trending orogen-top basins with synchronic associations of alluvial fan, fluvial and lacustrine deposits. The terrestrial basins are superimposed on the upper Burdigalian marine units with a c. 7 myr of hiatus that corresponds to a shift from regional shortening to extension. The initial infill of these basins is documented by a transition from marginal alluvial fans and axial fluvial systems into central shallow-perennial lakes coinciding with a climatic shift from warm/humid to arid conditions. The basal alluvial fan deposits abound in fossil macro-mammals of an early Turolian (MN11-12; late Tortonian) age. The Pliocene epoch in the region was punctuated by subhumid/humid conditions resulting in a rise of local base levels and expansion of lakes as evidenced by marsh-swamp deposits containing diverse fossil mammal assemblages indicating late Ruscinian (late MN15; late Zanclean) age. Infant and Child Skeletons from the Lower City Church at Amorium Amorium is a Byzantine city situ... more Infant and Child Skeletons from the Lower City Church at Amorium Amorium is a Byzantine city situated within the Emirdağ district of the province of Afyonkarahisar. Excavations in the 2007, 2008, and 2009 seasons yielded many tombs containing infant and child skeletons forming part of a cemetery datable to the 10 th and 11 th centuries. Many are multiple burials and were located principally to the north of the main church in an area called A20 situated to the east of the baptistery. Skeletal remains of 128 individuals from 36 tombs were analysed to reveal the demography and health status of the population. Among them 42,9% of the individuals died prenatally, at birth, or soon after birth. The results of this study indicate that the unfavourable geographic conditions of Amorium's location might have produced inadequate hygienic conditions and the malnourishment of the mothers which in turn caused infections and complications during birth, leading to premature and stillbirths. Those infants that did survive the critical neonatal and postnatal periods were generally able carry on their lives into puberty and adulthood.

Infant and Child Skeletons from the Lower City Church at Amorium Amorium is a Byzantine city situ... more Infant and Child Skeletons from the Lower City Church at Amorium Amorium is a Byzantine city situated within the Emirdağ district of the province of Afyonkarahisar. Excavations in the 2007, 2008, and 2009 seasons yielded many tombs containing infant and child skeletons forming part of a cemetery datable to the 10 th and 11 th centuries. Many are multiple burials and were located principally to the north of the main church in an area called A20 situated to the east of the baptistery. Skeletal remains of 128 individuals from 36 tombs were analysed to reveal the demography and health status of the population. Among them 42,9% of the individuals died prenatally, at birth, or soon after birth. The results of this study indicate that the unfavourable geographic conditions of Amorium's location might have produced inadequate hygienic conditions and the malnourishment of the mothers which in turn caused infections and complications during birth, leading to premature and stillbirths. Those infants that did survive the critical neonatal and postnatal periods were generally able carry on their lives into puberty and adulthood.

This is also true of Byzantine archaeology, and in recent decades graves and tombs, cemeteries and burial churches have increasingly been the focus of historical, art historical, and scientific research. By reason of its importance and size, the Byzantine capital of Constantinople occupies a central place in the historical development of Byzantine burial practices, and its funerary archaeology can be recognized as an essential source for understanding society, religion, demography, and urbanism in the imperial city. However, despite this importance, in contrast to the funerary archaeology of Old Rome, that of Constantinople is relatively poorly documented and often badly preserved, with data scattered in disparate publications, and lack a theoretical base and detailed synthesis. Fundamental information is still lacking, and even what is known has never been systematically compiled and evaluated.
Our conference seeks to address these issues by focusing on new approaches, new methodologies, and new discoveries. We aim to synthesize and devise a new understanding of the funerary archaeology of Constantinople and its suburbs, moving beyond just the primary documentation of empirical data to consider challenges of its recovery and interpretation, and to build up a new diachronic understanding of the development of burial practices in the capital region from the 4th to the 16th centuries.
