Cagatay Barut, MD, PhDProfessor of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, Bahçeşehir University, Istanbul, TurkeyCagatay Barut, MD, PhD was graduated from Gazi University School of Medicine in 1995 and held his PhD degree in 2001. He was appointed as an assistant professor of anatomy at Bulent Ecevit University (formerly Zonguldak Karaelmas University) School of Medicine in 2001 and as an associate professor in 2009 and as a professor in 2014. He was appointed as a professor in 2015 at Bahçeşehir University School of Medicine. He has 55 international publications, 65 international presentations in international congresses and 295 citations in indexed international scientific journals. He is the Interim Chair of the College of Representatives of the IFAA (International Federation of Associations of Anatomists) and member of executive committee of IFAA. He is the vice president of Turkish Society of Anatomy and Clinical Anatomy (TSACA). He is an associate editor of ANATOMY (International Journal of Experimental and Clinical Anatomy). He is also in the editorial boards of Journal of Morphological Sciences, Acta Medica International and ISRN Anatomy. His research interests are radiological anatomy, clinical anatomy, anatomy education, laterality, morphometric analysis, geometric morphometry, and anthropometry. Besides his academic career, he is interested in photography and medical illustration.

Study preferences in anatomy education: a descriptive study including preliminary results*

Objectives: In anatomical education, there is a lack of consensus about the best or most efficien... more Objectives: In anatomical education, there is a lack of consensus about the best or most efficient method used. Additionally, the learning style of students varies, and information related with the medical students' preferences for learning anatomy is rather limited. Thus, this article aimed to identify the study preferences of medical students in Turkey. Methods: Ninety-seven medical students aged between 19-26 years participated in the study. Participants were asked 16 questions related with the education system and study preferences of anatomy. Nine of the questions were related with the education system of their school in general and in terms of anatomy and seven of the questions were related with their way of studying anatomy, including time spent for studying, preference for a group or individual study, study materials and methods. Results: 88.6% of the respondents indicated that integrated medical education was the education system used in their schools. Systematic anatomy was the main method (93.8%) chosen for anatomy. Plastic models were the most frequent preference for lab studies (90.7%) followed by prosections (58.8%), specimens (30.9%) and cadaver dissections (21.6%). Majority of the respondents preferred studying anatomy alone (86.6%). Furthermore, students stated their preference of study methods as one or more at the same time, and the distribution of these methods were as follows: correlation of structures with relations (53.6%), functions (52.6%), clinical situations (30.9%), memorizing with mnemonics (53.6%) or tables and lists (45.4%), flash cards (7.2%), and regular repetitions (40.2%). Conclusion: Study preferences may lead changes in anatomy curricula in the future.

Traube's space is located in the left half of the front chest wall and is limited by the sixth ri... more Traube's space is located in the left half of the front chest wall and is limited by the sixth rib, left anterior axillary line, and left costal arch. [1] Within this space lies the fundus of the stomach. [2] During physical examination by percussion, a tympanic sound is produced due to the air-filled structure (Traube open). [3,4] However, in some pathological conditions, the space between the fundus of the stomach and the diaphragm shrinks and the sound heard changes to a dull tone (Traube closed). [3,5] Traube (1818-1876), who performed studies in this field, pointed out that the tympanic sound of this space may not be produced in various diseases. [1,6] In the following years, various related physical examination methods were developed, such as Nixon's method and Castell's method. Nixon studied this space by making patients lie on their right side, whereas Castell studied this space by making the patients lie on their back (supine position). [7,8] The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between Traube's space as evaluated by Castell's method and the body mass index (BMI). Materials and Methods This cross-sectional study was carried out with the participation of 35 individuals (21 males, 14 females) aged 22 to 30 years. A Comparison of Anatomical Measurements of the Infraorbital Foramen of Skulls of the Modern and Late Byzantine Periods and the Golden Ratio

The aim of this study was to examine the morphometric characteristics of the infraorbital foramen... more The aim of this study was to examine the morphometric characteristics of the infraorbital foramen of skulls of people living in modern society and in the late Byzantine period, to ascertain the symmetry or asymmetry of the two halves of the skulls by measuring the linear distance between various landmarks, to evaluate at the conformity between the infraorbital foramen and the golden ratio by calculating the ratios between these linear distances, and to set out the differences or similarities between the skulls of these different periods. It was found in the study that the morphometric characteristics of the infraorbital foramen in skulls of the modern period were 47.05 % circular, 41.17 % oval and 11.76 % atypical (semilunar and triangular) on the right, and 70.58 % circular and 29.41 % oval on the left, while those of the Byzantine period were 46.06 % circular and 53.3% oval on the right, and 50% circular and 50 % oval on the left. It was found that the measurements across the infraorbital foramen of the Byzantine skulls averaged 2.93±1.05 mm and 3.15±1.03 mm on the right side and 2.62±0.97 mm and 3.16±0.68 mm on the left vertically and horizontally respectively, and those of the modern period measured 2.32±0.50 mm and 3.00±0.92 mm on the right and 2.48±0.45 mm and 2.76±0.65 mm on the left vertically and horizontally respectively. The ratio between the distances from the outer orbital wall of the IOF to the sagittal plane and the piriform aperture were 1.46±0.25 mm and 1.40±0.21 mm for left and right respectively for the Byzantine skulls, and 1.24±0.24 mm and 1.29±0.42 mm for the modern skulls. A significant difference was found between the ratio obtained and the golden ratio for each of the periods (modern and Byzantine) (p<0.005). A comparison of anatomical characteristics of the infraorbital foramen of people living at different historical periods is important for anthropologists and knowing morphological types and amassing knowledge on the proportional calculation of location is important for dentistry, maxillofacial surgery and algology.

In this respect, correct assessment of this area during physical examination is very important. The aim of this study was to evaluate the area of Traube's space by percussion that is known to be sensitive and specific over 70% and assess effects of gender and defecation habit on the space area. Methods: Thirty-four males and 32 females participated in the study, examined by the same physician. Traube's space was determined on the chest wall by percussion. Images of Traube's space were drawn on a transparent paper using certain reference points for each participant. All images were scanned and measurements were done by AutoCAD 2004 software. Weight and height of the individuals were also measured and their defecation information for the morning they participated in the study was also inquired. Results: In the males, weight, height, body mass index (BMI) and Traube's space values were significantly higher than those of females (p<0.05). There was a positive, strong and significant correlation between Traube's space and weight and height for the whole study group (p<005). There were no statistically significant differences between these two groups when morning defecation was considered (p>0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study may be useful for the evaluation of Traube's space and spleen enlargement during physical examination.

Evaluation of Lacrimal Gland Dimensions with MR Imaging in a Turkish Population Sample

We aimed to evaluate the morphology of normal lacrimal gland in three different axes in a Turkish... more We aimed to evaluate the morphology of normal lacrimal gland in three different axes in a Turkish population sample by using magnetic resonance (MR) images in relation to sex, age, and side. Cranial MR images obtained by 3 Tesla MR unit of 85 individuals (40 female, 45 male; mean age 42.20±23.30 years; age range 2-83 years) performed in Göztepe Medical Park Hospital between December 2015 and July 2017 for non-orbital diseases were evaluated retrospectively. Anteroposterior, craniocaudal, and transverse dimensions of the lacrimal gland were measured on axial, coronal, and sagittal planes of MR images, and were evaluated in relation to side, age, and sex. Axial transverse and sagittal craniocaudal dimensions of lacrimal gland were significantly greater in the right side, as the coronal craniocaudal and sagittal anteroposterior dimensions were greater in the left side. Female and male individuals showed differences in terms of right-left sides in most of the parameters. In Spearman's correlation analysis, age of individuals was negatively correlated with left axial anteroposterior (r=-0.347, p=0.020), left axial transverse (r=-0.439, p=0.003), left coronal transverse (r=-0.429, p=0.003), and right coronal transverse (r=-0.436, p=0.003) dimensions of lacrimal gland. This is the first study determining certain morphometric parameters of the lacrimal gland in Turkish population sample. The side of lacrimal gland, and sex and age of individuals affect its dimensions. On the basis of reference measurements in the present study, orbital MR imaging can be used for the evaluation of lacrimal gland and its pathologies.

Cyclosporin-A(CsA) is a very potent immunosuppressive agent which is widely used in transplantati... more Cyclosporin-A(CsA) is a very potent immunosuppressive agent which is widely used in transplantations and autoimmune diseases. Recent studies suggest an encouraging clinical effect for low-dose, long-term cyclosporin A treatment in different lung diseases[1,2,3,4,5]. Whether administration of CsA might be useful for lowering the dosage of steroids during the treatment of interstitial pneumonia, asthma and lung injuries[6,7,8] is presently a matter of controversy. Several clinical studies reported that CsA might cause pulmonary complications in transplant recipients [9,10]. The aims of this experimental study were: (i) to examine the effects of CsA on lung at morphologic level and to verify the tolerability of long-term, low-dose treatment with this drug; (ii) to analyze if Cremophor-EL(the vehicle in the intravenous form of CyA) is responsible from the changes; (iii) to investigate if combined therapy with Prednisolone has better morphologic results on lung tissue. Forty-eight female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: Group I was control. The other three group had daily intraperitoneal injection of 4mg/kg/day CyA for 2,5 months. Group II had oral, Group III had intravenous form of this drug while Group IV had intravenous form of CsA with 1 mg/kg/day prednisolone. Biopsy specimens from lung were embedded in paraffin and the sections were stained with Hematoxylene & Eosin for microscopic examination.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anatomy and terminology for the conus arter... more Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anatomy and terminology for the conus arteriosus, thereby revealing possible differences among various sources of this information. Methods: Twenty-four textbooks, nine anatomy atlases, and six original articles related to terminology were examined. The term "conus arteriosus," first used in Terminologia Anatomica, published in 1998, was also evaluated. Results: Conus arteriosus is a part of the right ventricle (ventriculus dexter). Physicians refer to this structure as the 'infundibulum'. Taking into account the three-dimensional aspect of the right ventricle, its outer surface is considered to be the conus arteriosus. This structure is supplied by branches of the right and left coronary arteries which are called the conus arteries. Thus, utilization of the term "conus artery" supports the aforementioned suggestion. Conclusion: In case the term "conus arteriosus" falls out of preference for this structure as a whole, the nomenclature used for this structure in anatomy atlases must be corrected. This point is of importance for instructors and students.

Background: The brachial plexus has a complex anatomical structure from its origin in the neck, t... more Background: The brachial plexus has a complex anatomical structure from its origin in the neck, through its course in the axillary region. It is formed by the union of the ventral rami of the spinal nerves from C5 to T1. Anomalies in the formation of the cords of brachial plexus and the communications between its branches are common. Case Report: Anomalies of the brachial plexus in terms of the formation of the median nerve were observed during routine dissection of the right upper limb of the cadaver of a 55-year-old male. The branches of the lateral and medial cords of the brachial plexus were dissected carefully and the variation from the usual pattern was noted. The lateral root of the median nerve arose from the lateral cord and bifurcated after 2 cm. The upper part united with the medial root of the median nerve and the lower part united with the median nerve approximately 0.5 cm past the aforementioned unification. There was also a communicating branch originating from the musculocutaneous nerve that arose 6 cm distal to the origin of the lateral root. This communicating branch coursed medially and united with the median nerve. Conclusions: It is important to be aware of these variations when planning surgery and regional anesthesia of the axilla or upper extremity. In addition, the presence of anatomic variations of the peripheral nervous system is often used to explain unexpected clinical signs and symptoms

Methods: Thirty-four males and 32 females participated in the study, examined by the same physician. Traube's space was determined on the chest wall by percussion. Images of Traube's space were drawn on a transparent paper using certain reference points for each participant. All images were scanned and measurements were done by AutoCAD 2004 software. Weight and height of the individuals were also measured and their defecation information for the morning they participated in the study was also inquired. Results: In the males, weight, height, body mass index (BMI) and Traube's space values were significantly higher than those of females (p<0.05). There was a positive, strong and significant correlation between Traube's space and weight and height for the whole study group (p<005). There were no statistically significant differences between these two groups when morning defecation was considered (p>0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study may be useful for the evaluation of Traube's space and spleen enlargement during physical examination.

Evaluation of Lacrimal Gland Dimensions with MR Imaging in a Turkish Population Sample

We aimed to evaluate the morphology of normal lacrimal gland in three different axes in a Turkish... more We aimed to evaluate the morphology of normal lacrimal gland in three different axes in a Turkish population sample by using magnetic resonance (MR) images in relation to sex, age, and side. Cranial MR images obtained by 3 Tesla MR unit of 85 individuals (40 female, 45 male; mean age 42.20±23.30 years; age range 2-83 years) performed in Göztepe Medical Park Hospital between December 2015 and July 2017 for non-orbital diseases were evaluated retrospectively. Anteroposterior, craniocaudal, and transverse dimensions of the lacrimal gland were measured on axial, coronal, and sagittal planes of MR images, and were evaluated in relation to side, age, and sex. Axial transverse and sagittal craniocaudal dimensions of lacrimal gland were significantly greater in the right side, as the coronal craniocaudal and sagittal anteroposterior dimensions were greater in the left side. Female and male individuals showed differences in terms of right-left sides in most of the parameters. In Spearman's correlation analysis, age of individuals was negatively correlated with left axial anteroposterior (r=-0.347, p=0.020), left axial transverse (r=-0.439, p=0.003), left coronal transverse (r=-0.429, p=0.003), and right coronal transverse (r=-0.436, p=0.003) dimensions of lacrimal gland. This is the first study determining certain morphometric parameters of the lacrimal gland in Turkish population sample. The side of lacrimal gland, and sex and age of individuals affect its dimensions. On the basis of reference measurements in the present study, orbital MR imaging can be used for the evaluation of lacrimal gland and its pathologies.

Recent studies suggest an encouraging clinical effect for low-dose, long-term cyclosporin A treatment in different lung diseases[1,2,3,4,5]. Whether administration of CsA might be useful for lowering the dosage of steroids during the treatment of interstitial pneumonia, asthma and lung injuries[6,7,8] is presently a matter of controversy. Several clinical studies reported that CsA might cause pulmonary complications in transplant recipients [9,10]. The aims of this experimental study were: (i) to examine the effects of CsA on lung at morphologic level and to verify the tolerability of long-term, low-dose treatment with this drug; (ii) to analyze if Cremophor-EL(the vehicle in the intravenous form of CyA) is responsible from the changes; (iii) to investigate if combined therapy with Prednisolone has better morphologic results on lung tissue. Forty-eight female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: Group I was control. The other three group had daily intraperitoneal injection of 4mg/kg/day CyA for 2,5 months. Group II had oral, Group III had intravenous form of this drug while Group IV had intravenous form of CsA with 1 mg/kg/day prednisolone. Biopsy specimens from lung were embedded in paraffin and the sections were stained with Hematoxylene & Eosin for microscopic examination.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anatomy and terminology for the conus arter... more Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anatomy and terminology for the conus arteriosus, thereby revealing possible differences among various sources of this information. Methods: Twenty-four textbooks, nine anatomy atlases, and six original articles related to terminology were examined. The term "conus arteriosus," first used in Terminologia Anatomica, published in 1998, was also evaluated. Results: Conus arteriosus is a part of the right ventricle (ventriculus dexter). Physicians refer to this structure as the 'infundibulum'. Taking into account the three-dimensional aspect of the right ventricle, its outer surface is considered to be the conus arteriosus. This structure is supplied by branches of the right and left coronary arteries which are called the conus arteries. Thus, utilization of the term "conus artery" supports the aforementioned suggestion. Conclusion: In case the term "conus arteriosus" falls out of preference for this structure as a whole, the nomenclature used for this structure in anatomy atlases must be corrected. This point is of importance for instructors and students.

It is formed by the union of the ventral rami of the spinal nerves from C5 to T1. Anomalies in the formation of the cords of brachial plexus and the communications between its branches are common. Case Report: Anomalies of the brachial plexus in terms of the formation of the median nerve were observed during routine dissection of the right upper limb of the cadaver of a 55-year-old male. The branches of the lateral and medial cords of the brachial plexus were dissected carefully and the variation from the usual pattern was noted. The lateral root of the median nerve arose from the lateral cord and bifurcated after 2 cm. The upper part united with the medial root of the median nerve and the lower part united with the median nerve approximately 0.5 cm past the aforementioned unification. There was also a communicating branch originating from the musculocutaneous nerve that arose 6 cm distal to the origin of the lateral root. This communicating branch coursed medially and united with the median nerve. Conclusions: It is important to be aware of these variations when planning surgery and regional anesthesia of the axilla or upper extremity. In addition, the presence of anatomic variations of the peripheral nervous system is often used to explain unexpected clinical signs and symptoms
