Updates: Sessions, filters & maps

2026-08-02 - Both Observation and ObsIdentity received updates! In ObsIdentify, new filters have been added to the observation list. It is also possible now to delete an observation, directly in the app. Sessions in Observation have been expanded: when you start a session, you can now choose whether you want to walk a route or do a point count. A map of the session has been added to the session detail page. On the website, an export button has been added to all species maps. This will start a download of a PNG file of the map, including the species name and date range.

Update: mammal taxonomy

2026-05-21 - We have switched our mammal taxonomy from the IUCN Red List - which is no longer updated for smaller mammals - to the Mammal Diversity Database (MDD). Updates are implemented manually by volunteers, so changes to your life list will appear gradually.

Natura 2000 Day BioBlitz event 14-25 May

2026-05-07 - Nature areas all over Europe are joining the big event to celebrate the Natura 2000 Network. You can look at the map here to see if there is a BioBlitz organised near you.

Update: BioBlitzes in ObsIdentify

2026-04-23 - BioBlitzes have become available in ObsIdentify! You can now find BioBlitz events that are happening near you, right in the app. On a BioBlitz page you can see where it is taking place and keep track of your contributions to the BioBlitz. Download ObsIdentify to get started!

Update: filters in Observation

2026-03-05 - Last week we released Observation version 1.33. With this update, filters have been added to the “Me” tab! You can now filter your list of observations by date, species group, rarity and the presence of a photo. In addition, there is a search field that searches species names, location names and the note field.

Update: bird & mammal taxonomy

2026-03-05 - We are in the process of updating the taxonomies of birds and mammals to new standard lists. For birds, we are migrating from the IOC list to the new AviList. For mammals, we are following a similar process from the IUCN to the ASM Mammal Diversity Database. These changes may affect your observed species lists.
