This volume aims to ascertain the regional security dynamics and assess securitization as a driving force. It infers the scope of traditional, non-traditional, and transnational security issues and their regional impact, with a specific focus on the maritime perspectives of regional security dynamics, and also envisages the potential interplay of these factors as they continue to influence and shape future discourse. Dr. Vijay Sakhuja and Prof. (Dr) W. Lawrence S. Prabhakar have sought to provide a net assessment of regional challenges and opportunities in this study of the Indo-Pacific region’s security dynamics viewed through the ‘maritime variant’ of the Regional Security Complex Theory.

They are, as President K.R. Narayanan has said, useful “only when they are not used.”3 The essential minimal requirements of Indian nuclear deterrence are, therefore, a functioning command and control system and an ability to survive a first strike and provide for an assured retaliatory strike.

However, several of the US’s traditional allies in Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific, while welcoming China’s economic diplomacy, have been wary of China’s intentions and have refrained from joining its framework of relations. This chapter discusses the US initiatives of the pivot and its reenergizing of its economic and strategic relations with the Asia-Pacific however the US Pivot to Asia has since transformed with several statements of the Trump Administration and the hair-raising triggers of conflict in the Korean Peninsula calls for a comprehensive overhaul of US strategic approaches in its policy, engagement and the very scope of its ...
