Bernard Baars
I'm a cognitive neuroscientist, more recently into neurobiology, and originally a psycholinguist. I'm known for books and scientific articles on the topic of conscious cognition, originally based on psychological evidence, and now incorporating a great deal of brain and biological evidence. My main books and papers are being re-published soon. Most recently I've published on a Global Workspace Dynamics of Conscious Experience. The field now has many thousands of biomedical articles, and it continues to grow. It's fun...

Books by Bernard Baars
"An impressive tour, centered around the question of what we might be able to discover scientifically regarding the role played by conscious experience in the functioning of the mind."--Brian D. Josephson, Nobel Laureate in Physics
Product Description
Written by eminent psychologist Bernard J. Baars, this book brings us to the frontlines of the consciousness debate, offering the general reader a fascinating overview of how top scientists currently understand the processes underlying conscious experience. The study of conscious experience has seen remarkable strides in the last ten years, reflecting important technological breakthroughs and the enormous efforts of researchers in disciplines as varied as neuroscience, cognitive science, and philosophy. Scientists are just now beginning to find common ground in their understanding of consciousness, which may pave the way for a unified explanation of how and why we experience and understand the world around us. This book offers an invaluable introduction to the field, brilliantly weaving together the various theories that have emerged as scientists continue their quest to uncover the profound mysteries of the mind--and of human nature itself.
See Global Workspace Theory on wikipedia. The original book may be ordered from Cambridge University Press or downloaded from Google books.
A brief popular version was published by Oxford University Press in 1997, B.J. Baars (1997), In the Theater of Consciousness: The workspace of the mind.
A basic version is also available at www.nsi.edu/users/baars.
All my published papers are available free at the University of Memphis, Institute for Intelligent Systems website. http://ccrg.cs.memphis.edu/papers.html
I am also teaching a running advanced seminar on "The Conscious Brain" through the Center for Consciousness Center, University of Arizona, Tucson.
Collaborative projects continue with Prof. Stan Franklin at IIS, University of Memphis, and with colleagues at The Neurosciences Institute, San Diego, www.nsi.edu.
Interested students, scholars and scientists are welcome to contact me via the Neurosciences Institute in San Diego. See www.nsi.edu
Cognition, Brain & Consciousness: Introduction to Cognitive Neuroscience. Second Edition: 2010. From Academic Press/Elsevier. Due in March of 2010. Student friendly:
• An easy-to-read and complete introduction to mind-brain science, especially written for college students in psychology, education, biology, pre-medical sciences and other majors. All chapters begin from easy-to-understand mind-brain functions, and build a coherent picture of their brain basis across chapters. A single, widely accepted functional framework is used to capture the major phenomena.
• The Second Edition is completely updated, with thirteen “Frontiers in Cognitive Neuroscience” text boxes, each one focused on an important researcher and topic. A new chapter on Genes and Molecules of Cognition has been added. The chapters on Consciousness and Attention and Executive Functions have been completely revised, based on the most recent discoveries. New material has been added on the most recent advances in brain imaging.
• New Learning Aids: A new Mini-Atlas of the Brain, a full Glossary of technical terms and their definitions
• Lavishly illustrated with carefully selected color graphics from the extensive archives of Elsevier/Academic Press, ranging from Gray’s Anatomy to the latest issue of Trends in Cognitive Sciences.
Teacher-friendly
• Rapid adoption and course preparation: A wide array of instructor support materials are available, so that once adopted, the instructors can quickly and easily be ready for class: complete Powerpoint lecture slides for each chapter, including hyperlinks to relevant websites and other supporting materials; a large test bank with multiple choice and short answer questions; study guides; eFlashcards on key concepts for each chapter for use in lecture or as student study guides; and an online website with links to a wealth of multimedia information and websites.
• A textbook that spans many academic disciplines using an easy-to-understand thematic approach: Many educational fields now require a basic understanding of the new topic of cognitive neuroscience, however available textbooks are written more for biology audiences than for psychology and related majors. This text bridges that gap: it does not require a background in biology or neuroscience. Rather, it adopts an easy-to-understand thematic approach, building on widely understood concepts in psychology, such as working memory, selective attention, and social cognition.
• New Teaching Aids: A new Mini-Atlas of the Brain provides the instructor with a simplified way to introduce the topographical features of brain anatomy and the basic terms that are used in navigating around the brain; a full Glossary of technical terms and their definitions provides a key database for instructors for use in explaining and testing on key terms;
• Beautiful and well-articulated brain figures and legends: figures from contemporary journal publications are presented with simplified figure legends so that students may grasp the complex results and theoretical interpretations quickly and easily;
• A step-by-step approach for introducing students to brain anatomy: The brain is introduced in a step-by-step, readable style. Hundreds of color graphics have been carefully selected to illustrate all points and the research explained. Beautifully clear artist's drawings are used to 'build a brain' from top to bottom, simplifying the layout of the brain.
